Install aa-daily-reflections, create a DailyReflections client, then call getToday() or getReflection(month, day). The package returns reflection data for your app to render; it does not provide a web interface.

Install the package and fetch a reflection

From your Node.js project directory, install the package:

npm install aa-daily-reflections

In a CommonJS file, use the client to retrieve today’s entry:

const { DailyReflections } = require('aa-daily-reflections');

async function main() {
  const reflections = new DailyReflections();
  const reflection = await reflections.getToday();

  console.log(reflection.title);
  console.log(reflection.quote);
  console.log(reflection.reference);
  console.log(reflection.reflection);
}

main().catch((error) => {
  console.error('Could not fetch the reflection:', error);
});

This CommonJS example follows the usage documented by the aa-daily-reflections project README. The request is asynchronous, so await it inside an async function or another asynchronous handler.

Choose today’s entry or a specific date

Use getToday() when the app should show the current day’s reflection. To request a particular calendar date, pass its month and day to getReflection(month, day):

const june25Reflection = await reflections.getReflection(6, 25);

The documented example requests June 25 with getReflection(6, 25). Use the returned date, month, and day fields to label the result rather than assuming the request succeeded with the date your UI expects.

Set the language

English is the default. The README also documents Spanish (es) and French (fr). Set the language when constructing the client:

const { DailyReflections } = require('aa-daily-reflections');

const spanishReflections = new DailyReflections('es');
const reflection = await spanishReflections.getToday();

The README also documents changing an existing client’s language with setLanguage(). For example, call reflections.setLanguage('fr') before making the request for French content.

Display the returned fields

The documented reflection result contains these fields:

Field What it represents in an app
title The entry’s title
date, day, month, monthName Date information for identifying and labeling the entry
quote The featured quotation
reference The cited source reference
reflection The main reflection text
copyright Copyright information returned with the entry

A basic server-rendered or client-side view can use the result to show a heading, date, quotation, main text, source reference, and copyright notice. Keep the source reference and copyright information with the displayed content; do not assume that fetching text makes it free to reproduce.

The README also provides TypeScript usage, including a DailyReflection interface for the returned fields and a Language type. A framework-specific component is an implementation choice: the package supplies data access, not a React, Vue, or other UI component.

When putting fetched text into a web page, render it as text through your framework’s normal escaping or safe-output mechanism. Avoid treating reflection content as trusted HTML.

Handle invalid dates and request failures

Wrap the request in try/catch so the app can respond when it cannot retrieve an entry. The README shows errors for invalid dates and for network or API failures, but it does not establish a stable error class or a broader error contract. Use the documented error-message examples for guidance, and avoid depending on a specific message string as a long-term interface.

async function loadReflection(month, day) {
  try {
    return await reflections.getReflection(month, day);
  } catch (error) {
    console.error('Reflection request failed:', error);
    return null;
  }
}

In a production app, use the failure state to show a clear message or retry option rather than rendering an empty or partial entry as if it were complete.

Check the documented Node.js runtime notes

The package README lists Node.js 16.x, 18.x, 20.x, and 22.x. It says Node.js 18 and later include fetch; for Node.js 16, the package will try to use node-fetch if available or provide an error. These are maintainer-documented compatibility notes, not independently verified runtime tests. Check the README for current package guidance before choosing a runtime.

Respect the content and upstream service

The project README describes the library as unofficial and states: “The Daily Reflections content is copyrighted by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.” It advises users to respect AA.org’s terms and avoid excessive requests. Using this wrapper is not evidence that you have permission to republish the full text; confirm the applicable rights and terms for your use.

Use the CLI only for terminal retrieval

The README separately documents a command-line interface, including aa-daily, aa-daily 06/25, and language flags. That is an alternative for retrieving an entry in a terminal. For an app that needs to fetch data in its own code, use the JavaScript or TypeScript API described above.
