If an electronic device will not turn on, first verify its power source, charger and connections, then allow for a depleted battery and check for signs that the device is on but the display is blank. Only use reset steps and charging guidance for the exact model. Stop if you see swelling, corrosion or damage, or if the device remains unresponsive after these safe checks.
Start with the power source and connection
A dead battery, faulty cable or adapter, loose connection, software problem, blank screen, or internal defect can all look like a device that will not turn on. One symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. Begin with checks that do not require opening the device.
- Plug the charger into an outlet you know works. If practical, check the outlet with another device.
- Confirm the adapter is intended for your device and that both ends of the cable and the device connector are seated securely. Use the manual or manufacturer support page to check the model’s power requirements before trying a substitute.
- Inspect the adapter, cable and port for visible wear, looseness, corrosion or other damage. Do not force a connector or insert metal objects into a port.
- If you have another charger or cable confirmed compatible with the exact device, try it. Testing a charger and cable with another device can also help identify whether the accessory is at fault.
Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. In particular, not every USB-C port supports charging, and not every USB-C adapter supplies the power a device requires. ASUS advises checking the model manual when USB-C charging support is uncertain: ASUS battery and power troubleshooting. Google also recommends checking the charger and cable and trying compatible alternatives: Google’s Android charging and startup guidance.
Give a deeply discharged battery time
If the battery has been fully depleted, the device may need to charge before it displays an indicator or can start. Connect verified working power and wait rather than repeatedly pressing the power button. Follow the timing in the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

- ACCURATE CIRCUIT BREAKER IDENTIFICATION: Quickly locate the correct breaker with precision using our circuit breaker finder, ensuring efficient electrical troubleshooting
- TWO-PART SYSTEM: Consists of a Transmitter connected to the outlet/fixture and a Receiver to scan the panel, allowing for easy and accurate breaker identification
- CLEAR INDICATIONS: The Receiver provides visual and audible cues when the correct breaker is found, ensuring a hassle-free locating process
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Operates on 90-120V AC circuits, making it suitable for a variety of electrical systems and installations
- BUILT-IN GFCI TESTER: The Transmitter includes a GFCI outlet tester, enabling you to inspect wiring conditions and test GFCI devices for added safety
For a specific case—a fully discharged Android phone showing a red light—Google advises charging for at least 30 minutes before restarting. That is guidance for the described Android condition, not a universal wait time for every device. Other models may specify a different period.
Check whether the device is on but the display is blank
Look for model-appropriate signs of activity: a charging icon, status light, sound, vibration, keyboard illumination or other response. A missing battery icon does not always mean the device has no power. Google notes that when an Android phone shows no battery icon or red light after connection, the screen itself may be the problem.

If it is a phone, a call or notification may help reveal whether it is active despite a blank display. Consult the manufacturer’s screen-specific guidance for the exact model; indicator meanings and display checks vary. Verizon’s device power-up troubleshooting includes checks for visible damage and other clues.
Compare the clues before deciding what to try next
| Possible cause | Clues | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Outlet, adapter, cable or connection | No charging indicator; a loose or damaged plug or cable; or another device also fails with the same adapter. | Check the outlet and seating, inspect for damage, and test only with equipment confirmed compatible with the device. |
| Deeply discharged or failed battery | The device was depleted or unused; an indicator appears after a delay; or a laptop runs on AC power but not on battery. | Allow the model-appropriate charging time, then follow the manufacturer’s battery checks. HP provides notebook battery troubleshooting; Dell’s guidance applies specifically to Inspiron and Vostro laptops with no power. |
| Power is present but the display is blank | Sound, vibration, a status light or another response without visible screen output. | Check screen-specific guidance for the model; arrange service if the display remains blank. |
| Temporary power-state or software problem | Charging is indicated, but startup does not complete; the model has a documented reset procedure. | Follow the manufacturer’s exact restart or reset instructions. |
| Physical damage or internal fault | Swelling, corrosion, visible damage, or continued failure after external power checks. | Stop ordinary troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. |
Use only the reset instructions for your model
A forced restart or hard reset can address a temporary power-state problem, but button combinations and procedures differ across devices. Do not assume a phone’s button sequence applies to a laptop or another electronic device.

- NON-CONTACT DETECTION of AC voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, non-tamper-resistant outlets, and wires
- CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
- BROAD APPLICATION with a 50 to 1000V AC power detection range
- CONSERVE BATTERIES with auto power-off function
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE compact design with a convenient clip fits securely in pocket; 6.6-Foot (2 m) drop protection
For example, Google’s Android guidance describes holding a phone’s power button for 5–7 seconds. LG gives a different power-reset procedure for its notebooks, while ASUS directs notebook and handheld users to model-dependent EC, RTC or hard-reset instructions. Find the exact model’s manufacturer support page or manual and follow that procedure; do not substitute a sequence from another product.

Do not continue ordinary charging tests if the battery is swollen or deformed, the port is corroded or visibly damaged, or the adapter or cable is damaged. Stop using the device and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance. HP has specific instructions for a swollen or deformed notebook battery.
