When I set up a Google Pixel, I change five features before installing apps or restoring backups: gesture navigation and Quick Tap, Call Screen and spam protection, Now Playing, Notification History, and the strongest theft protection the phone offers. These changes reduce interruptions, recover accidentally dismissed alerts, surface useful information, and make a lost or stolen phone harder to misuse.
Pixel menus can move between Android releases, and some features depend on your country, carrier, model, account, or Phone app version. The paths below use current Google labels where they are documented; if a label is missing, use the Settings search field with the term shown.
The five Pixel changes at a glance
| Feature | Where I change it | What it improves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gesture navigation and Quick Tap | Settings > System > Navigation mode; Settings > System > Gestures > Quick Tap | More screen space and faster actions | Less visible guidance than three-button navigation |
| Call Screen and spam protection | Phone app > More > Settings > Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen | Fewer interruptions from unknown or suspected scam calls | Availability and automatic screening vary by location and device |
| Now Playing | Settings search: “Now Playing” | Identifies nearby music without opening an app | Some people prefer not to display song information on the lock screen |
| Notification History | Settings search: “Notification history” | Recovers alerts dismissed by mistake | Adds another notification-management screen to review |
| Theft protection and Advanced Protection | Settings > Security and privacy, plus the Google-account security controls shown there | Raises the barrier to account, SIM, and device takeover | Stronger checks can require your account, authentication, or newer Android support |
1. Use gesture navigation, then configure Quick Tap
Google’s Pixel guidance says the default navigation setting is “Gesture Navigation,” meaning you swipe to operate the device. I keep that setting because it removes the persistent Back, Home, and app-switcher buttons and leaves more room for content. Swiping from the bottom edge goes Home, swiping up and holding opens recent apps, and swiping inward from either side goes Back.

- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Navigation mode.
- Select Gesture navigation.
During the first few minutes, practice the bottom-edge swipe and the side swipe in apps you use most. If you repeatedly trigger Back while reaching for a control near the edge, return to System > Navigation mode and use the available gesture-sensitivity controls. The alternative is Three-button navigation, which keeps visible Back, Home, and overview buttons. I use that option for someone who values an always-visible control over extra screen space or who finds edge swipes unreliable.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Assign a useful action to Quick Tap
Quick Tap is the two-tap back action documented by Google for Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones. It can take a screenshot or play and pause media, among other supported actions. I set it to an action I perform often but do not want to hunt through menus to find.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Gestures.
- Tap Quick Tap to start actions.
- Turn on Use Quick Tap and choose the action you want.
Test it while holding the phone normally. A thick case, a loose grip, or tapping too softly can make the shortcut feel inconsistent. Screenshot is a practical default because it is easy to verify; media play/pause is better if you frequently listen with the phone in your hand or pocket. If your Pixel is older than the supported generation, the Quick Tap entry may not appear.
2. Turn on Call Screen and spam protection where your Pixel supports them
Unknown calls are the setting change that most directly reduces interruption. Call Screen can ask an unfamiliar caller why they are calling before you answer, while caller-ID and spam protection can identify or warn about suspected unwanted calls and text messages. I enable every control that my Phone app exposes, then leave contacts and expected service calls able to ring normally.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Find the controls in the Phone app
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the More menu (three dots).
- Tap Settings.
- Look for Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. On some releases, related controls are grouped under Call Assist.
- Enable the available options for spam filtering, caller identification, and Call Screen. Review each automatic-screening choice before accepting it.
Google states that manual Call Screen is available in the United States and Canada on selected Android devices. Other Call Screen modes vary by country, device, and Phone app version. A Pixel bought in one country and used in another can therefore show a different menu from the one described in a US help article. If Call Screen is absent, keep caller ID and spam protection enabled if those controls are offered; do not assume that a missing menu indicates a hardware fault.
Choose interruption reduction over maximum reachability
Screening is useful when you receive robocalls, delivery scams, or repeated calls from numbers you do not recognize. The cost is that a legitimate caller may have to respond to the screening prompt or wait for you to decide. I check voicemail and recent calls during the first week after enabling it, especially if I am expecting a doctor, school, courier, or employer to call from an unfamiliar number.
Google Safety Center also documents caller-ID and SMS spam protection. These features are warnings and filters, not a guarantee that every scam will be blocked. Keep your contacts current and report obvious spam through the Phone or Messages app so the device has more information to work with.

3. Enable Now Playing for passive music discovery
Now Playing is one of the few Pixel features that can be useful without opening an app. Google describes it this way: “With Now Playing, Pixel can identify music playing around you and show the song info on your home screen.” I turn it on because it answers the question “What song is that?” while I am in a café, shop, car, or living room.
Turn it on and decide what appears
- Open Settings.
- Use the search field and enter Now Playing.
- Open the matching Now Playing settings page and turn on music identification.
- Review the options for the lock screen and the Now Playing list, then leave only the display behavior you want.
Menu placement can differ by Android release, so searching is often faster than browsing through Sound and vibration. The important choice is not only whether identification is enabled, but also whether identified songs appear on the lock screen or remain inside the Now Playing history. I keep the feature on and adjust the display if I want less information visible before unlocking the phone.
4. Enable Notification History before you need it
Notification History is a recovery tool. If you swipe away an alert before reading it, the history can show which app sent it and, where supported, the text or action that was in the notification. I enable it immediately because the setting cannot recover notifications that were dismissed before the history feature was turned on.

Find the current menu
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field.
- Enter Notification history.
- Open the result and turn on Use notification history.
On many Pixel releases the full path is Settings > Notifications > Notification history, but the search term is more dependable when Google reorganizes the Notifications page. After enabling it, dismissing a notification does not mean losing the entire trail: return to the same screen to see recent dismissed alerts and identify the responsible app.
Use it as a diagnostic, not a permanent inbox
When an alert keeps disappearing, Notification History helps distinguish an app that never sent it from one that sent it and was dismissed. Use that information to change the app’s notification categories, sound, or priority rather than enabling every category indiscriminately. History is most valuable for one-time messages such as sign-in codes, delivery updates, calendar reminders, and system warnings that are easy to lose during a busy day.

5. Enable the strongest theft and security protection available
I treat security as a version-qualified setup check rather than a single switch. Android 15 added authentication requirements for sensitive anti-theft actions, including removing a SIM or turning off Find My Device, and it can add further lock-down behavior after multiple failed attempts. Android 16 introduced Advanced Protection as “Google’s strongest mobile device protection.” The exact controls shown depend on your Android release, Pixel model, Google account, and region.

Start in Security and privacy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy.
- Review the device-unlock method, Find My Device status, screen-lock settings, and any Theft protection or related anti-theft controls.
- Enable every protection your phone supports, including stronger authentication for sensitive actions.
- If your phone offers Advanced Protection, read its requirements and enable it when the account and app compatibility rules fit your situation.
Use a strong screen lock rather than a short, predictable pattern. Confirm that Find My Device is on and that the phone can be located before you leave the Security and privacy page. Theft protection is designed to make a stolen phone harder to reset, disable, or detach from your account; it does not replace a screen lock, recovery email, or a current backup.
Balance protection with compatibility
Advanced Protection is intentionally stricter. It may limit which apps can be installed or require additional account checks, so test the apps and work tools you depend on after enabling it. If a banking, enterprise, or accessibility app stops working, check the feature’s explanation and your account requirements before weakening the entire phone’s security. A device that cannot meet the feature’s conditions will show different options from a newer Pixel running a supported Android release.
My setup order on a new Pixel
I make these changes in an order that catches the highest-impact controls first:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Security and privacy, set the screen lock, verify Find My Device, and enable supported theft protection.
- Set Gesture navigation, then test Quick Tap with a screenshot or media action.
- Open the Phone app’s spam and Call Screen settings and note which options are available in your location.
- Enable Notification history before dismissing routine alerts.
- Turn on Now Playing and choose whether song information should appear on the lock screen.
This sequence separates account and theft protection from convenience preferences. It also makes regional or version-dependent omissions obvious: if a control is not present, the rest of the setup is still complete and you know which feature is unavailable on that particular Pixel.
What to revisit after a major Android update
After an Android version or Phone app update, search Settings for Notification history, Now Playing, and Theft protection again. Google sometimes moves a setting or changes the label while preserving the function. Recheck Call Screen availability if you change countries, carriers, or devices, and review lock-screen display choices if Now Playing begins showing more information than you want visible. These five changes are personal defaults, not permanent rules: the right configuration is the one that reduces interruptions and improves recovery without blocking the calls, apps, and account checks you actually need.
