Use STL when you need to exchange a simple shape, 3MF when you need to preserve an editable project and its print context, and G-code only after slicing for the exact printer and process that will run it. These files occupy different stages of a 3D-printing workflow: STL describes geometry, 3MF packages geometry with project and manufacturing data, and G-code contains the machine instructions produced by a slicer.

The short answer: pick the file for the job

There is no universal “best” format because STL, 3MF and G-code are not interchangeable versions of the same thing. They answer different questions. STL answers, “What is the object’s surface shape?” 3MF answers, “What is this printable project, including its objects, settings and related assets?” G-code answers, “Which movements and process commands should this target printer execute?”

What you need to do Use this file Reason
Send a basic shape to software with broad, basic format support STL It carries the object as a surface-triangle mesh.
Keep models, slicer settings, modifiers, colors, textures, thumbnails or multiple parts together 3MF It is a package that can preserve project and manufacturing context.
Print immediately on a known, compatible machine setup G-code It is the sliced, printer-oriented instruction stream.
Reopen a project and change print settings later 3MF or the original CAD source The project context remains available instead of being reduced to one slice.
Send geometry to software you cannot identify in advance STL, or a compatibility-checked 3MF STL has the simplest payload; 3MF features and extensions vary between applications.

The practical rule is simple: share the highest-level file that the recipient can actually use. Share a 3MF project with a compatible slicer when settings matter, an STL when only geometry matters, and G-code only when the receiving printer and process profile are known.

Where each format fits in a print workflow

1. A model or CAD application creates geometry

A design starts as editable CAD or other modeling data. That source may contain construction history, dimensions, sketches and parameters that are not represented in a mesh export. When you export an STL, you create a surface representation for downstream software. When you save a 3MF project from a slicer, you are saving a later-stage print project rather than the full parametric CAD history.

2. The slicer prepares a manufacturing plan

A slicer combines the model with decisions about the target printer, nozzle, material, layer height, speeds, temperatures, supports, infill and other process controls. A 3MF project can retain those decisions in an editable form. The slicer then converts the plan into G-code for a particular machine profile.

3. The printer executes G-code

The printer does not normally interpret a 3MF project as a complete set of motion instructions. It executes the commands generated by slicing. That is why changing a nozzle, material, layer height, support strategy or printer profile requires returning to the model or project and slicing again.

STL: a portable geometry mesh

Prusa describes STL as storing an object’s geometry “as a series of surface triangles.” Each triangle approximates part of the outside surface, giving another application the shape it needs to display, repair or slice the object. This narrow payload is STL’s main strength: a receiving application does not need to understand your original modeling history or slicer project in order to use the shape.

What STL preserves

  • The triangulated surface geometry of the exported object.
  • A broadly recognized interchange representation for applications that accept mesh models.
  • A straightforward starting point for importing into a slicer and making new process decisions.

What STL leaves behind

  • Slicer settings such as temperatures, speeds, layer height and support choices.
  • Project-level modifiers and the arrangement of multiple objects.
  • Color, texture, thumbnails, print tickets and other package parts.
  • The editable design history held by the original CAD application.

Consequently, an STL is appropriate when the recipient should make their own slicing choices or when the receiving software has limited 3MF support. It is not a complete backup of a print project. If someone opens only the STL, they should expect to select a printer and process profile again.

When STL is the safer exchange choice

Use STL for a simple single-part shape, a public geometry hand-off, or a workflow in which the recipient’s slicer and printer settings are intentionally different from yours. It is also a sensible fallback when you do not know which application will open the file. The trade-off is that every recipient must reconstruct the print context themselves.

3MF: a project and manufacturing package

The 3MF Consortium defines 3MF as “An open, XML-based standard for full-fidelity 3D model transfer across additive manufacturing applications, platforms, services, and hardware.” The core specification describes a ZIP container that holds a 3D model and can include optional print tickets, thumbnails, textures, metadata and other parts. It can operate as a stand-alone file or as a payload in a print pipeline.

Why the package matters

A 3MF file can keep related assets together instead of scattering a model, a profile export and image files across separate locations. The specification says that all content needed to manufacture the object described in the payload must be contained in the document. In a slicer project, that can mean the objects on the build plate, their placement, settings, modifiers and associated presentation or manufacturing information travel as one file.

What a slicer project can retain

Prusa Research’s project guidance states that choosing Menu → File → Save Project as saves a 3MF containing all objects, settings, modifiers and their parameters—a complete snapshot of a PrusaSlicer project. Its guidance also says that opening the project on another computer should still produce the same G-code, provided the relevant software, profiles and hardware assumptions are compatible.

That repeatability is the reason to choose 3MF for collaboration, archiving and revisions. A teammate can inspect the arranged objects, adjust a modifier or change a process setting without reconstructing the entire setup from an STL.

Standard format, variable implementation

3MF is standardized, but applications can implement different extensions and project conventions. The consortium records ISO/IEC 25422:2025 as the international-standard designation. Its current site figure lists 15 steering members and 20 associate members; those figures describe consortium participation, not a guarantee that every slicer supports every 3MF feature.

A generic 3MF model is usually more portable than a vendor-specific project archive. Before sending one, verify that the recipient’s slicer supports the materials, colors, textures, production data or slice features used in the file. If the application ignores an extension, the geometry may open while important project information does not.

G-code: the sliced instructions for a target printer

G-code is the downstream output of slicing. It encodes movements and process commands that a printer will execute, based on the selected machine, nozzle, material, temperatures, speeds, supports and other profile decisions. It is therefore tied to the assumptions used to create it rather than being a universal model file.

Why an old G-code file can be the wrong file

If the printer changes, the nozzle diameter changes, or the material and temperature requirements change, the old instruction stream may no longer match the hardware or process. The same warning applies to layer height, support placement, speeds and other settings. Return to the STL, 3MF project or original design, update the profile, and slice again instead of treating an existing G-code file as an adaptable source.

Readable but not an efficient project archive

PrusaSlicer documentation describes G-code files as easy to read and interpret, while noting that their data is not saved efficiently. More importantly for a workflow, G-code records the result of decisions rather than the editable decisions themselves. It is the file for execution, not for changing the model or safely rebuilding a print plan.

Detailed comparison

Characteristic STL 3MF G-code
Primary role Geometry interchange Model, project and manufacturing package Sliced machine instructions
Representation Surface triangles XML data in a ZIP container with optional related parts Printer-oriented commands produced by a slicer
Stores slicer settings No Yes, when the application writes them into the project Encodes the selected settings in executable form, but does not preserve them as an easily editable project
Stores colors or textures Not as a complete project payload Can include colors, textures and related assets when supported Only the resulting toolpath and commands are present
Editable after opening Mesh-level editing; project decisions must be rebuilt Project-level editing in compatible software Not a practical substitute for editing the model or re-planning the print
Printer-specific No Project may contain printer assumptions but is not itself the final machine stream Yes; tied to the target setup and profile
Best hand-off Basic shape Settings-rich collaboration or archiving Immediate execution on a verified setup

Choose the format by scenario

“Should I use STL or 3MF?”

Choose STL if the recipient needs only the shape, uses unknown or basic software, or should make independent slicing decisions. Choose 3MF if the recipient uses a compatible slicer and you want the object arrangement, modifiers, colors, textures or print settings to remain available. If the recipient cannot confirm 3MF support, send an STL for geometry and separately document any process assumptions that matter.

“Is G-code the same as 3MF?”

No. A 3MF project describes and packages a printable project; G-code is the generated instruction stream for one target setup. Opening a 3MF normally leads to slicing. Sending G-code skips that planning step and asks the printer to execute the already-generated result.

“Can I edit a 3MF file?”

You can edit a 3MF in software that understands the project data it contains. You may be able to move objects, adjust modifiers, change settings or work with supported colors and textures. The extent of editing depends on the receiving application and on which 3MF extensions the file uses. A 3MF is not automatically the same as the original parametric CAD source, so retain that source when dimensional or design-history edits are important.

“Do I need STL if my slicer accepts 3MF?”

No. If your slicer accepts the 3MF files you receive and preserves the features you need, use 3MF directly. Keep an STL export when you need a simple geometry fallback, broad interchange, or a version that intentionally excludes project settings.

“Which file should I send to my 3D printer?”

Send the printer the G-code generated for that printer and its current material and process profile. Send a 3MF to another person when they need to inspect or modify the project before slicing. Send an STL when they need only the model geometry.

Step-by-step workflows

Workflow A: share geometry as STL

  1. Export the selected object from the modeling application as STL.
  2. Check the exported mesh in the receiving slicer for orientation, scale and visible surface problems.
  3. Choose the recipient’s printer, nozzle and material profiles.
  4. Set layer height, supports, temperatures, speeds and other process options for that setup.
  5. Slice the model and inspect the preview before producing G-code.
  6. Send the resulting G-code to the target printer, not the STL, when the goal is immediate printing.

This workflow deliberately transfers shape while leaving manufacturing decisions to the person who owns the printer.

Workflow B: preserve a settings-rich 3MF project

  1. Open the project in the slicer that created it.
  2. Confirm that all objects, placements, modifiers and intended settings are present.
  3. Use the application’s project-save command; in PrusaSlicer this is Menu → File → Save Project as.
  4. Open the saved 3MF on the recipient’s computer using a compatible slicer.
  5. Check the selected printer, material and feature support before slicing.
  6. Preview the newly generated G-code and resolve any profile or extension differences before printing.

Keep the original CAD source alongside the 3MF when future edits may require parametric design history rather than slicer-level changes.

Workflow C: transfer G-code for printing

  1. Verify the printer model, firmware expectations, nozzle, material and process profile used for slicing.
  2. Review the slicer preview for first layers, supports, travel and any intentional pauses or special commands.
  3. Export the G-code using the slicer’s supported transfer method, such as an SD card or USB device.
  4. Use media that the printer supports; card type, capacity, formatting and connector requirements vary by printer, so check its manual before purchasing or reusing a card.
  5. Safely eject the media, insert it into the printer, and select the file from the printer’s own interface.
  6. Watch the start of the job, especially the first layer, and stop the printer if temperatures, movement or material flow are inconsistent with the intended setup.

Do not assume that a downloaded G-code file is safe or portable merely because it has the expected file extension. Inspect it in the context of the printer that will execute it, and re-slice a trusted model when you need control over temperatures, motion, supports or material settings.

Why colors, settings or modifiers disappear after exporting STL

The loss is a consequence of STL’s scope, not necessarily an export error. STL carries the surface-triangle geometry, while colors, textures, object arrangements, modifiers and slicer parameters belong to project or manufacturing context. When you export only STL, the receiving application receives the shape and must infer or recreate everything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a 3MF project when those details must travel with the model. If the receiving application does not support the relevant 3MF extension, verify the result after opening; a standardized container can still contain features that a particular program does not interpret.

Compatibility and safety checklist

  • Identify the stage: geometry exchange calls for STL; project exchange calls for 3MF; printer execution calls for G-code.
  • Confirm software support: ask which slicer and version will open the file, especially for 3MF extensions.
  • Verify hardware assumptions: printer model, nozzle, material and temperatures must match the G-code profile.
  • Re-slice after changes: a different printer, nozzle, material, layer height, support plan or process setting invalidates the assumption that old G-code is appropriate.
  • Inspect before running: preview the toolpath and check the first layer rather than trusting a file from an unknown source.
  • Keep source files: archive the original CAD source when design-history edits may be needed, and keep the 3MF when slicer-project reconstruction would be costly.
  • Use the right transfer media: SD and USB requirements are printer-specific; follow the manufacturer’s manual for capacity, format and handling.

A practical archive strategy

For work that may be revised, keep three levels when they are available: the original CAD source for design edits, the 3MF for the arranged and configured print project, and the final G-code only as a record of what was sent to a particular printer setup. Label the G-code with the printer, material and date so it is not mistaken for a reusable universal file. If storage is limited, preserve the source and 3MF first; G-code can be regenerated when the compatible profiles remain available.

Bottom line

STL is the lean geometry hand-off, 3MF is the settings-rich project package, and G-code is the printer-specific execution file. Use STL for simple, broadly compatible shapes; use 3MF to preserve an editable project and its manufacturing context; and generate G-code only after confirming the exact machine and process that will run it. Whenever the printer, nozzle, material or other process assumptions change, go back to the model or project and slice again.
