Bitwarden autofill usually fails for one of a few specific reasons: the vault item has no matching website URI, the wrong Android or iOS autofill provider is selected, the browser’s own password manager is competing with Bitwarden, or the page uses a form Bitwarden cannot detect.
Work through the platform-specific checks below. Start with the URI and autofill-service checks before reinstalling anything.
1. Check the saved Bitwarden login
Bitwarden cannot match a browser login unless the vault item has an assigned website URI. This is the first thing to check when the extension shows no suggestion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the Bitwarden extension or app.
- Open the affected login item.
- Check the URI or website field.
- Add the site’s actual address, then save the item.
- Reload the login page and try autofill again.
For browser extensions, Bitwarden uses Base domain as the default URI match method. A saved URI such as https://example.com can therefore match pages on the same base domain, subject to the item’s match-detection settings. If an organization has specified a different default match method, your result may differ.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

When the current website does not match the saved URI, open the item’s details in the extension and select Autofill. Bitwarden offers two choices:
- Autofill and add this website to the login item
- Autofill without adding the website to your vault
Use the first option if the site is legitimate and should be associated with that login. Be careful before adding a URI from a suspicious or misspelled domain.
2. Fix autofill in the Bitwarden browser extension
Enable the inline autofill menu
If no Bitwarden icon appears inside username or password fields:
- Unlock the Bitwarden browser extension.
- Select Settings → Autofill.
- Enable Show autofill suggestions on form fields.
- Optionally enable Display identities as suggestions and Display cards as suggestions if you need those item types.
There is also a setting called Display suggestions when icon is selected. When enabled, matching logins appear only after you select the Bitwarden icon. When disabled, matching suggestions appear immediately below the field.
Try manual extension autofill
Open the login page, select the Bitwarden extension, open the Vault tab, and select a matching item under Autofill suggestions. Bitwarden fills the detected fields. If several matching logins exist, it uses the last-used login.
This test helps separate a suggestion-display problem from a matching or field-detection problem. If manual autofill works but the inline menu does not, review the inline-menu settings rather than changing the vault item.
Use the keyboard shortcut
The default browser-extension shortcut is:
Ctrl + Shift + Lon Windows and LinuxCmd + Shift + Lon macOS
Press the shortcut again to cycle through multiple matching logins. If nothing happens, open the browser’s extension-shortcut settings and assign or change Bitwarden’s autofill shortcut. Another extension or the browser itself may already be using the same key combination.
Try the context menu
Right-click a username or password field and select Bitwarden → Autofill. This is supported in browser extensions, but context-menu autofill is currently unavailable in the Safari browser extension.
Disable competing browser autofill
Bitwarden recommends disabling the browser’s built-in password autofill. Two providers attempting to fill the same field can cause duplicate suggestions, the wrong account to be inserted, or a field to be overwritten after Bitwarden fills it.

Disable browser password autofill in the browser’s password-manager settings, then reload the page and test Bitwarden again. Also remove or disable other password-manager extensions temporarily while diagnosing the problem.
3. Understand page-load autofill limitations
Browser-extension autofill on page load is disabled by default. If you expect Bitwarden to fill a page automatically as soon as it opens:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Bitwarden extension.
- Go to Settings → Autofill.
- Enable Autofill on page load.
- Choose the default page-load behavior.
- Configure individual login items if only selected sites should use it.
Page-load autofill does not fill TOTP codes. To fill a one-time code, use the inline menu, keyboard shortcut, context menu, or manual autofill from the extension. After browser-extension autofill, Bitwarden copies the TOTP to the clipboard automatically by default. You can change this under Settings → Autofill → Copy TOTP automatically. The Clear clipboard setting controls how long copied values remain available; the default is five minutes.
4. Check for iframe and HTTP restrictions
A login form embedded in an iframe may not be eligible for autofill. Bitwarden restricts autofill in untrusted iframes. An iframe is considered untrusted when its src does not match a URI saved for the login item under the applicable match-detection setting.
- Page-load autofill is silently disabled for an untrusted iframe.
- Manually triggered autofill displays a warning instead.
Some sites also load the form over HTTP while your saved login requires HTTPS. Bitwarden can warn before filling in that situation. Do not bypass an HTTPS warning on a site that should support secure connections; check the address and the site configuration first.
5. Fix Bitwarden autofill on Android
Enable Bitwarden as the Android autofill service
- Open the Bitwarden app.
- Go to Settings → Autofill → Autofill services.
- When Android opens the service-selection screen, choose Bitwarden for passwords, passkeys, and autofill.
- Return to Bitwarden’s Settings → Autofill screen.
- Under Display autofill suggestions, choose Inline or Popup.
The minimum Android versions are:
| Method | Minimum requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Autofill Service | Android 8 | Requires Bitwarden to be selected as the service |
| Inline Autofill | Android 11 | Requires a keyboard/IME that supports inline suggestions |
| Accessibility | All Android versions | Can be stopped by battery and task-management controls |
If your keyboard does not support inline autofill, select Popup instead. Popup autofill appears over a focused username or password field when Bitwarden detects a matching login.

Bitwarden matches installed Android apps by their application package name, not by a website URI. Browser pages are matched using the website URI. Therefore, a login that works in Chrome may not automatically match the corresponding native app, and vice versa.
Android mobile autofill also does not currently support custom fields or split login workflows in which the username and password appear on separate screens.
Configure browser integrations
For Brave and Chrome on Android, open Bitwarden and go to Settings → Autofill. Enable the relevant option:

- Use Brave autofill integration
- Use Chrome autofill integration
The browser’s own settings must also allow a third-party autofill service. Chrome’s protected autofill integration requires Bitwarden’s Autofill services option to be enabled and Chrome version 135 or later. It disables Chrome’s built-in autofill in favor of Bitwarden.

They use modified autofill logic. Bitwarden documents a security risk with these browsers: credentials could potentially be autofilled into an embedded or hidden iframe on a malicious page. Use autofill only on trusted, legitimate sites.
Handle HTTP pages in Brave or Chrome
On Brave and Chrome for Android, autofill does not work on HTTP sites unless the browser is configured to treat the origin as secure. For a local development site in Brave:
- Open
brave://flags. - Search for Insecure origins treated as secure.
- Enable the flag.
- Add the required origin, such as
http://192.0.2.0/24orhttp://myserver.local. - Relaunch Brave.
Use this only for controlled local or development environments. Production login pages should use HTTPS.
Stop Android from shutting down accessibility autofill
Accessibility autofill is commonly interrupted by battery optimization or task-manager software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Turn off battery optimization for Bitwarden.
- Add Bitwarden to any battery-saver or task-manager exception list.
- On phones with a built-in task manager, open the running-apps view, hold or swipe up on the Bitwarden icon, and select Lock if that option is available.
- Do not use Android’s Force stop action on Bitwarden while relying on accessibility autofill; force-stopping the app can halt the service.
Some manufacturers require an overlay permission as well. On Huawei and Honor devices, open Huawei/Honor Optimizer or Phone Manager → Dropzone and enable Bitwarden. On Oppo and some other devices, look under Settings → Privacy/Security → Floating Windows or App Management and permit floating windows for Bitwarden.
Use Android quick-action tiles as an alternative
Bitwarden quick-action tiles use Android’s accessibility service and do not require the Autofill services toggle. Edit the notification shade using the pencil or edit control, add the Bitwarden tiles, and use them when the normal suggestion interface fails.
On Android 17, enabling Advanced Protection prevents Bitwarden from accessing the accessibility service, so Bitwarden quick-action tiles will not work. Use another autofill method in that configuration.
6. Fix Bitwarden autofill on iPhone and iPad
Select Bitwarden as the iOS provider
- Open iOS Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords.
- Enable AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.
- Under Autofill From, select Bitwarden.
- Deactivate other providers, such as Apple Keychain, while testing.
Most iOS autofill methods require the Bitwarden login item to have a website URI. If iOS displays a matching login above the keyboard, tap it. If it displays a Passwords button instead, tap that button to browse the vault. The button commonly appears when no vault item has a matching URI.

Activate the Bitwarden browser app extension
- Open Bitwarden.
- Go to Settings → Autofill → App extension.
- Select Activate app extension.
- Open the iOS Share menu and tap Bitwarden.
- Confirm that the green Extension Activated! message appears.
To test it, open a browser page where you are not signed in, tap Share, scroll through the actions, select Bitwarden, and choose the matching login.
iOS mobile autofill does not currently support custom fields or split login workflows where the username and password are shown on separate screens.
Check vault timeout and two-step login settings
iOS autofill cannot be used when Bitwarden’s vault timeout action is Log Out and the only enabled two-step login method requires NFC, such as an NFC YubiKey. Change the vault timeout action to Lock, or enable another two-step login method.
If your Argon2id KDF memory setting is above 64 MB, iOS may show a warning every time autofill starts or a new Send is created through the Share sheet. Bitwarden documents lowering the Argon2id memory setting or enabling biometric unlock as ways to avoid the repeated warning.
Configure iOS passkey autofill
Bitwarden passkey autofill and passkey creation require iOS 17.0 or later. Open Settings → Passwords → Password Options, enable AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys, and enable Bitwarden under Use passwords and passkeys from:.
7. Fix forms Bitwarden cannot detect
Some sites use unusual field names, custom JavaScript controls, embedded login widgets, or multi-step forms. If the URI is correct but Bitwarden fills nothing, try the extension’s manual Autofill command first.
For a site whose fields are not detected, Bitwarden documents linked custom fields as a way to force autofill. This is an advanced, site-specific fix: inspect the form’s field identifiers, create the corresponding custom fields in the login item, and link them as required by Bitwarden’s custom-field autofill instructions.
Do not assume that a missing TOTP field indicates a general failure. Page-load autofill does not fill TOTP codes, so use an interactive autofill method instead.
8. Passkeys are a separate autofill case
Bitwarden can autofill passkeys through its passkey dialog or inline autofill menu. It will not offer to save or use a passkey for a domain listed under excluded domains.

On Android, configure the provider through Bitwarden app → Settings → Autofill → Passkey management. Android does not allow third-party passkey providers to support passkey-based two-factor authentication or non-discoverable credentials; Bitwarden passkeys can be used only as primary login credentials.
9. A quick diagnosis table
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No matching login appears | Missing or incorrect URI | Add the exact site URI to the item |
| Bitwarden icon is missing from fields | Inline menu is disabled or set to icon-only | Check Settings → Autofill |
| Shortcut does nothing | Shortcut conflict or changed browser binding | Check extension shortcut settings |
| Browser fills the wrong password | Built-in browser autofill conflict | Disable the browser’s autofill |
| Android suggestions never appear | Wrong service, unsupported IME, or battery restriction | Enable Bitwarden service and check battery settings |
| iPhone shows only Passwords | No item matches the current URI | Add or correct the login item’s website URI |
| Page-load fills username but not TOTP | Expected behavior | Use inline, shortcut, context menu, or manual autofill |
| Autofill warns about an iframe or HTTP page | Security restriction | Verify the page and its URI before proceeding |
10. When to check Bitwarden’s service status
A service outage can affect vault access or synchronization, but it is not the best first explanation for a single site that will not autofill. First test another known login, verify the URI, and check the platform settings above. If Bitwarden login or vault access fails broadly, check the Bitwarden status page, try another network, and consider whether a VPN, proxy, Tor connection, or shared public IP is affecting access.
FAQ
Why does Bitwarden show no matching login?
The most common reason is that the login item has no website URI or its URI does not match the current page. Add the site under the item’s URI field and try again.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Bitwarden autofill manually but not automatically?
Browser page-load autofill is disabled by default. Enable it under the extension’s Settings → Autofill → Autofill on page load. Inline suggestions are controlled separately.
Why is Bitwarden not filling the verification code?
Browser page-load autofill does not autofill TOTP codes. Use the inline menu, keyboard shortcut, context menu, or manual extension autofill. TOTP is copied to the clipboard after browser-extension autofill by default.
What Android version is required for Bitwarden autofill?
The Android Autofill Service requires Android 8 or later. Inline Autofill requires Android 11 or later and a keyboard that supports inline suggestions. Accessibility autofill is available on all Android versions.
Why does Bitwarden work in my Android browser but not in the app?
Android matches installed apps by application package name, while browser pages are matched by website URI. The app may therefore need its own matching login configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does iPhone autofill show a Passwords button instead of my login?
That commonly means no Bitwarden item has a matching website URI. Add or correct the URI, then try autofill again.
Does Bitwarden support split-screen login forms on mobile?
No. Bitwarden mobile autofill currently does not support workflows where the username and password appear on separate screens, on either Android or iOS.
Can I use right-click autofill in Safari?
Bitwarden supports context-menu autofill in browser extensions, but context-menu autofill is currently unavailable in the Safari browser extension.
The Bottom Line
Start with the vault item’s website URI, then confirm the correct autofill provider and display method for your platform. In the browser extension, test manual autofill and the Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + L shortcut before enabling page-load autofill. On Android, check the selected service, keyboard support, browser integration, and battery restrictions. On iPhone and iPad, select Bitwarden under AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys and disable competing providers while testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf only one site fails after these checks, the problem is likely that the site’s form, iframe, HTTP configuration, or custom fields do not match Bitwarden’s supported detection rules—not that the entire vault is broken.
