If Excel formula auditing is not visible or appears to do nothing, check the platform first. The complete Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents workflow is documented for the Windows and Mac desktop applications; Excel for the web and mobile can have narrower auditing and circular-reference troubleshooting. Open the workbook in the desktop app, select the cell that actually contains the formula, and then use the Formulas tab. If arrows still do not appear, set File > Options > Advanced > Display options for this workbook > For objects, show to All. Closed external workbooks, structural edits, unsupported object types, and manual calculation can also make auditing seem broken.
Why can’t I see Trace Precedents or Trace Dependents?
The first question is whether the workbook is open in desktop Excel or in a browser or mobile app. Microsoft documents the tracer-arrow workflow for desktop editions. In Excel for the web and mobile, auditing and circular-reference troubleshooting can be limited, so missing commands are often a platform limitation rather than a damaged workbook.
Check the platform before changing the workbook
- Desktop Excel for Windows or Mac: provides the documented tracer arrows, Show Formulas, Evaluate Formula, Error Checking, and calculation controls.
- Excel for the web or mobile: may let you view or calculate formulas, but advanced auditing is narrower. Choose Open in Excel to move the file to the desktop application when you need the full tracing workflow.
Do not troubleshoot the arrows in a browser and assume the same commands are missing from the desktop program. The interface and available diagnostics differ by platform.

Select a formula cell, not a result or label
Trace commands operate on relationships involving a formula. Click the cell that contains the formula you want to investigate, then open Formulas. Trace Precedents follows cells that feed the selected formula; Trace Dependents finds formulas that refer to the selected cell. If a heading, text label, blank cell, or other non-formula item is selected, the command may be unavailable or appear ineffective.

How do I restore missing formula-auditing arrows in desktop Excel?
Use this sequence in the desktop app. It separates a display problem from a workbook-reference problem, so you can see exactly where tracing stops.
- Select the formula cell. Click the cell whose inputs or outputs you need to understand. For a wrong total, start with the total cell; for a source value that seems suspicious, start with that source and look for dependents.
- Open the tracing command. On the Formulas tab, choose Trace Precedents to follow inputs or Trace Dependents to follow formulas that use the selected cell. Repeat the same command to extend the chain through additional levels.
- Make workbook objects visible. If the command runs but no arrows can be seen, open File > Options > Advanced. In Display options for this workbook, set For objects, show to All, confirm the change, and run the tracing command again.
- Open every referenced workbook. If the formula points to another Excel file, open that referenced file before tracing. Desktop auditing arrows cannot normally follow a closed external workbook.
- Clear old arrows before a new investigation. Select Remove Arrows on the Formulas tab, select the new target cell, and run the appropriate trace command again. This prevents arrows from an earlier cell from being mistaken for the current relationship.
What each arrow direction tells you
| Command | Start with | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Trace Precedents | A cell containing the formula with the suspect result | Which cells feed this formula? |
| Trace Dependents | A cell whose value may be used elsewhere | Which formulas refer to this cell? |
| Remove Arrows | Any sheet showing tracer arrows | How do I clear the current visual investigation? |
Why does Excel beep or appear to do nothing when I trace?
A beep does not necessarily mean Excel is malfunctioning. Microsoft says Excel beeps when all available tracing levels have already been displayed or when the selected reference is not traceable.
The chain has reached its available depth
Click the same trace command repeatedly while the chain continues through additional cells. When Excel has no further available level, another click can produce a beep without adding a new arrow.

The selected reference is not traceable
Some objects and references do not participate in the tracer-arrow workflow. The documented untraceable cases include text boxes, embedded charts or pictures, PivotTable reports, named constants, and formulas in a closed external workbook that refer to the active cell. In those cases, use formula text or stepwise evaluation instead of expecting an arrow to appear.
Why did my formula-auditing arrows disappear?
Tracer arrows are temporary indicators, not permanent annotations attached to a worksheet. Microsoft states that all tracer arrows disappear when you change the formula to which the arrows point.
Structural edits also clear them. Inserting or deleting rows or columns, or deleting or moving cells, can remove the displayed relationships. After any such edit, select the formula again and rerun Trace Precedents or Trace Dependents. If you are changing several formulas, use Remove Arrows first so the next investigation starts with a clean display.

How can I find the cell causing a wrong result when arrows are not enough?
Use three complementary tools: Show Formulas to compare formula text, Evaluate Formula to inspect calculation steps, and recalculation controls to ensure the displayed result is current.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compare formulas across neighboring cells
- On the Formulas tab, choose Show Formulas. The worksheet switches from calculated results to visible formula expressions.
- Compare the suspicious cell with a nearby cell that produces the expected pattern. Look for a shifted range, a missing reference, or a relative reference that changed when a formula was copied.
- With the inconsistent cell selected, run Trace Precedents. Then select the nearby correct cell and run the command again. The two sets of inputs can reveal which reference differs.
- Choose Show Formulas again when you want to return to the normal results view.
Step through a single formula
Select one formula cell and choose Formulas > Formula Auditing > Evaluate Formula. The dialog evaluates portions of the expression in sequence and can step into referenced formulas. This is useful when the arrows show the right cells but the result is still unexpected because one intermediate expression evaluates differently from what you assumed.
Recalculate a manually calculated worksheet
If the workbook is set to manual calculation, the displayed value may be older than the formula text. Press F9 or use Formulas > Calculation Options to recalculate. Check the result again after recalculation before changing the formula; otherwise you may correct a value that was merely stale.

How do I diagnose a circular reference?
A circular reference exists when a formula points to itself directly or reaches itself through another cell. Excel cannot resolve an ordinary circular chain as a normal one-way calculation, so use the dedicated error list instead of relying only on arrows.
- Open Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References.
- Select each address listed in the menu. Excel moves to the cell involved in the circular chain.
- Inspect the formula and its related cells, then revise the references so the ordinary calculation path no longer loops back to the starting cell.
- Continue until the status bar no longer reports a circular reference.
Desktop Excel also exposes iterative-calculation settings for models that intentionally use circular logic. Iteration is a modeling choice, not a general repair for a mistaken reference; an ordinary worksheet should have its formulas corrected rather than masking the loop with an iterative setting.
What is the difference between desktop Excel and Excel for the web?
Use desktop Excel when you need the complete graphical tracing workflow or detailed circular-reference diagnosis. Browser and mobile versions can calculate formulas and provide some controls, but Microsoft describes their advanced troubleshooting as more limited.

| Capability | Desktop Excel | Excel for the web or mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents arrows | Full documented workflow | Auditing and circular-reference troubleshooting can be limited; open the workbook in desktop Excel |
| Show Formulas and calculation controls | Available | Formula calculation and calculation options are available, but advanced troubleshooting is narrower |
| Tracing a closed external workbook | The referenced workbook must be open | Use desktop Excel for the complete tracing workflow |
| Circular-reference diagnosis | Error Checking and tracing tools | More limited than desktop Excel |
Which Excel auditing tool should I use first?
Choose the tool based on the question you are trying to answer rather than clicking every command at random.
| Your question | Best first tool | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Which cells feed this result? | Trace Precedents | Unexpected inputs, ranges, or links to another workbook |
| Where is this value used? | Trace Dependents | Downstream formulas that change when the selected cell changes |
| Do neighboring cells contain the same formula pattern? | Show Formulas | Different ranges, operators, or relative references |
| Which part of the expression produces the unexpected value? | Evaluate Formula | Intermediate results and referenced formulas |
| Is the displayed result current? | F9 or Calculation Options | A refreshed value after manual calculation |
| Does a formula loop back to itself? | Error Checking > Circular References | Listed cell addresses and the formula path that must be revised |
What should I check when tracing still fails?
- Confirm that you are using desktop Excel, not only the browser or mobile interface.
- Click the actual formula cell before opening the Formulas tab.
- Set For objects, show to All for the current workbook.
- Open every workbook referenced by the formula.
- Remove existing arrows and rerun the command after selecting the correct cell.
- Remember that formula edits and row, column, or cell moves clear arrows; trace again after the edit.
- If the issue is a value rather than a visible relationship, switch to Show Formulas, Evaluate Formula, or recalculation controls.
- For a circular-reference warning, use the Circular References list and revise the formulas before considering iterative calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a named constant be traced with Trace Precedents?
No. Named constants are among the references Excel identifies as untraceable, so the arrow view may stop even though the formula is valid. Inspect the formula text or use Evaluate Formula to see how the constant participates in the calculation.
Why do arrows stop at a chart, picture, text box, or PivotTable?
Those object types are not traceable references in Excel’s documented auditing workflow. Treat the stop as a boundary of the arrow tool and inspect the underlying cell formulas or source range instead.
Does the object-display setting apply to every workbook?
The option is located under Display options for this workbook, so it controls the workbook you are currently troubleshooting. If another file hides arrows, check that file’s setting separately.
Will enabling iterative calculation identify the bad circular formula?
No. Iterative calculation is intended for models deliberately designed to use circular logic; it permits repeated calculation but does not explain which reference is wrong. For an ordinary worksheet, use the Circular References list and edit the formulas until the warning clears.
