To play games in Nintendo’s NES Classics library on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The standard membership is enough; you do not need the pricier Expansion Pack. This applies to Nintendo’s subscription library, not every NES game available on Nintendo systems.
Which classic NES games require a membership?
Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics library is a subscription benefit. Nintendo says a classic-games library can only be accessed by a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Downloading the app does not buy or permanently unlock its games. Nintendo’s classic-games FAQ explains the access rules.
This requirement is specific to the NES Classics service. Some older NES games may also be sold through other channels, such as eShop releases or packaged collections, and those purchases are separate from the subscription library.
Is the basic Nintendo Switch Online plan enough?
Yes. The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy classic game libraries. The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier adds other classic libraries and benefits; it is not required for NES Classics. Nintendo’s US membership overview describes the plan differences.

How to get the NES Classics library
- On your console, open Nintendo eShop with a Nintendo Account that has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Go to the Nintendo Switch Online section and select Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics.
- Select Free Download. The app is available to eligible members; the download itself is not a permanent purchase of its games. See Nintendo’s NES Classics product page.
Can you play NES Classics offline?
Yes, but offline access is temporary between membership checks. Nintendo says the console needs to connect to the internet at least once every seven days to verify that the membership is active. If it cannot verify membership within that period, access may be unavailable until it reconnects.
What happens if your membership expires?
You lose access to the NES Classics games until the membership is renewed. Nintendo says game save data remains on the console and can be used again if you renew. Also, membership is checked for each Nintendo Account: an unsubscribed account cannot use the classic libraries simply because another account on the same console has a membership. These rules are covered in Nintendo’s support FAQ and Nintendo’s account and membership support information.
