- The VPS IP address. You will use it in an SSH command immediately after deployment.
- A hostname. Choose a domain or subdomain that will identify the forum, such as
community.example.com. Use a name you control and can resolve to the VPS; the browser step depends on that hostname. - An administrator email address. Use an inbox you can access for setup and forum administration.
- SMTP credentials. Obtain the mail server address, username, and password from your email provider before starting. Discourse uses these values for account and forum messages.
- Optional certificate and geolocation details. The prompts may ask for a Let’s Encrypt email address and a MaxMind license key. The guide identifies both as optional, so do not invent values if you do not need those features.
- An SSH client. A terminal on Linux or macOS, Windows Terminal, or another SSH client is sufficient.
If your DNS record is not ready, you can still prepare the server, but a hostname that does not resolve to the VPS will prevent the normal browser test. Verify the record with your DNS provider before troubleshooting Discourse itself.
How do I connect to the VPS over SSH?
Connect as the root user using the address assigned to the new VPS. Replace the placeholder in the command with the actual IPv4 address shown in your VPS control panel.

The template guide states that the Discourse setup launches automatically after you log in through SSH. You should therefore see an interactive setup screen rather than a normal idle shell. Copy credentials carefully. A typo in the SMTP hostname, username, or password can allow the installation to finish while silently preventing password resets, invitations, and notifications later. If your mail provider uses a special SMTP port or encryption mode, follow that provider’s documented values when the setup script requests them; do not substitute a webmail login URL for an SMTP server address.
How do I finish the first-run setup in a browser?
When the script completes, the forum is reached through the hostname you entered, but the web-based administrator registration is still a separate action.

- Select Register on the Discourse welcome page.
- Complete the account form and the on-screen setup questions.
- Sign in with the account you just created and confirm that the administration controls are available.
Do not use a different spelling, an alternate subdomain, or the raw IP address for this verification unless the template documentation explicitly supports it. The hostname is the value Discourse was configured to serve, and mismatches commonly look like a failed installation even when the container is running.
What should I configure immediately after registration?
Use the administrator interface to turn the default installation into a usable community. Make one change at a time and preview the public result in a separate browser window.
Define categories and posting boundaries

How do I create backups?
Backups are not described as an automatic part of the template’s setup script. Configure them from the Discourse administration panel’s Backups area after registration.
- Sign in with the administrator account.
- Open the administration panel.
- Select Backups.
- Review the available backup controls and create an initial backup before making substantial configuration changes.
- Define a recurring backup routine that matches how much forum activity you can afford to recreate after a failure.
- Periodically verify that a backup completes and that you know where it can be retrieved; a list of successful jobs is not a substitute for a recovery plan.

When investigating an incident, note the time, the browser symptom, and the output pattern you observed. Avoid deleting containers or changing configuration values as a first response; those actions can remove evidence and make recovery harder.

What if HTTPS was not configured during the initial setup?
