1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a typical Java, React, and Spring Boot application, React displays and edits data through an HTTP API; the Spring Boot backend applies application rules and handles durable database access. If the data is relational, Spring Data JPA can reduce persistence boilerplate with repository abstractions over JPA. React should not connect directly to the production database, and JPA is only one valid persistence approach.
How data persistence is divided across the stack
Think of persistence as a backend responsibility and the browser as an API client. React gathers user input, presents results, and sends requests to the application. Spring Boot receives those requests, validates and processes application operations, and reads or writes the database. The API sits between the interface and storage.
This separation keeps database credentials and persistence details out of the browser, while giving the backend a place to enforce rules consistently. It is a common architectural default, not a requirement that every application use the same API design or database.
- React: presents data and gathers user input; it can request, create, update, or delete records through API operations.
- HTTP API: defines the operations and data exchanged between the frontend and backend.
- Spring Boot: implements application behavior and coordinates durable data access.
- Database: stores data beyond an individual browser session or backend process, subject to its configuration and operational setup.
What Spring Data JPA does—and what it does not
For relational persistence, these three pieces have distinct roles:

- JPA is the Java persistence standard used to map Java objects to relational data.
- Spring Data JPA builds repository abstractions on JPA, providing implementations and query options that can reduce repetitive data-access code.
- Spring transaction support coordinates work that should succeed or fail as a unit.
Spring Data JPA is not the database itself, and it is not the only way to persist data from Spring Boot. Select versions that are compatible with the Spring Boot release you choose; the Spring Data JPA project page directs readers to supported-version relationships. Do not assume that a version combination is compatible without checking it.
Spring also supports declarative and programmatic transaction management. The appropriate choice depends on the application and how its work is organized; transaction boundaries should reflect cohesive units of application work rather than being added mechanically to every database call. See the Spring Data JPA transactionality documentation.

Choose a database from the application’s requirements
There is no universal database winner established for this stack. Before choosing relational or non-relational storage, describe what the application must do and how it will be operated.
- Data shape: Are records strongly related, or do they fit more naturally into document-like structures?
- Consistency: Which operations must be coordinated so that related changes remain consistent?
- Access patterns: What queries and updates will the application perform, and how do they map to the chosen storage model?
- Scale and latency: What response times and growth expectations should the system support?
- Deployment and operations: Where will the database run, and who will manage it?
- Recovery: What backup and restore capabilities does the application need?
- Team and framework fit: Which options match the team’s experience and the application’s integration needs?
These are decision criteria, not a ranking of database products. The Spring guide’s JPA example uses H2 as an in-memory backend; that demonstrates a getting-started setup, not a recommendation for durable production storage. See Spring’s guide to accessing JPA data with REST for the example’s scope.

Place transaction boundaries around a unit of work
A transaction boundary determines which related persistence operations participate in one unit of work. For example, if one application operation updates multiple related records, consider whether those changes should be committed or rolled back together. A service or facade layer is often a suitable place to express that boundary because it represents application work rather than an individual repository call.
Spring Data JPA gives inherited CRUD repository methods transaction defaults, but declared query methods do not receive transaction configuration by default. Configure transactions intentionally instead of assuming every repository method is already covered. Spring Data’s guidance says: “Typically, you want to declare the transaction boundary at the start of a unit of work to ensure proper consistency and desired transaction participation.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A readOnly transaction declaration is a hint or optimization in the documented Spring Data JPA guidance; it is not a universal prohibition on writes. The effect can depend on the persistence provider and transaction configuration, so do not use it as a substitute for enforcing application rules.
Keep the API contract distinct from persistence details
The objects used to store data do not always need to be the objects sent over the API. Separating the API contract from persistence entities can help control validation, serialization, and compatibility as the application evolves. The exact design depends on the system; Spring’s REST/JPA example does not prescribe one particular DTO strategy.

Regardless of the object design, let the backend validate and enforce rules that matter to the application. Treat client-submitted values as input, not as proof that an operation is permitted or that data is valid.
Understand Spring Boot’s JPA configuration behavior
Spring Boot does not use META-INF/persistence.xml by default. If a project needs a traditional persistence setup, configure it explicitly rather than assuming Boot will discover and apply it automatically. Projects mixing JPA and Mongo repositories may also need explicit repository configuration to ensure each repository is associated with the intended technology.
Configuration depends on the selected Spring Boot and Spring Data versions and the application’s setup. Consult the documentation matching those versions rather than copying configuration from an unrelated release.
Where React-side persistence and caching fit
Client-side state and caching are separate concerns from durable backend storage. React can retain data for presentation and interact with API responses, but choices about offline support, browser persistence, cache invalidation, and data-fetching libraries depend on the application’s requirements. The sources here do not establish a particular React library or client-side persistence strategy as the right choice.
Decide what should remain available after navigation, reload, loss of connectivity, or sign-out, and what must be refreshed from the server. Do not treat a browser cache as a replacement for the backend’s durable data store or authoritative application rules.
Quick Recap
A practical implementation sequence
- Define the data and operations. Identify entities, relationships, validation rules, reads, writes, and which changes must be consistent.
- Select storage based on requirements. Compare relational and non-relational approaches against data shape, queries, operations, backup needs, and team experience.
- Choose compatible framework versions. Check the supported Spring Data JPA and Spring Boot version relationship if using JPA.
- Implement backend persistence and application operations. Keep database access in Spring Boot and expose the required operations through an API.
- Set transaction boundaries. Identify cohesive units of work and configure transactions where their operations should participate together.
- Define the API contract. Decide how requests and responses represent data, including whether separate DTOs help manage validation and compatibility.
- Connect React through the API. Have the frontend request and submit data through backend operations rather than connecting it directly to the production database.
- Plan production operations. Confirm deployment, backup, recovery, and any client caching or offline requirements for the actual application.
