But the documented conversion is a project overview, not a complete build guide: it does not provide full assembly, wiring, firmware setup or commissioning instructions.
What the documented conversion actually does
Tfan’s Hackster.io project, published August 22, 2021, describes using a Da Vinci Jr. as the starting point for a HyperCube-style printer. The author labels it “Showcase (no instructions)” and says the project does not cover HyperCube assembly details. Treat it as one builder’s account and parts list, not as a verified recipe for every Da Vinci Jr. revision.
The author says the specific donor unit came from an auction for about 5,000 yen (approximately US$50). That is the reported cost of one used printer in 2021, not a current price estimate. The author also describes that unit as lacking a heated bed and having chipped filament, proprietary firmware and proprietary software; those observations apply to the author’s machine, not necessarily every unit.

- Bottom cover and Y-motor mounting plate: the bottom cover was retained along with the plate where the Y-axis motor mounts.
- Stepper motors: the author reused all of them.
- Extruder: identified as an optional reuse.
- Optical endstops: potentially reusable after modification; the project points to a SoliForum teardown post for pin identification.
- LED strip and glass bed: mentioned as original parts; the glass bed is conditional on not needing a heated bed.
These are choices from one build, not a guarantee that parts will fit or work unchanged in another Da Vinci Jr. Check the exact printer revision, connectors, dimensions and electrical characteristics before reusing anything.

Before selecting substitutes or buying components, verify mechanical fit, mounting, voltage, current, connector pinouts and firmware support for your specific parts. The Hackster page is not a safe wiring specification.
How the frame is rearranged
At a high level, the author describes removing the covers and original assemblies until the frame remains, then moving the four vertical aluminum extrusions to the corners and securing them with brackets to form a square frame. The project also mentions adding Z brackets and rods, installing a bed frame, positioning X- and Y-axis endstops, and routing a cable chain for the heated bed.

The author says there is space for the replacement control board after removing the original one and recommends a blower fan beside the board for stepper cooling. Side panels and a top cover are described as ways to retain interior heat when printing ABS. These are the author’s design observations; the project does not report controlled tests establishing cooling or enclosure performance.
Custom printed parts and firmware reference
The project lists several fitted printed parts: a BLTouch bracket, door knob and hinge, TFT screen case, cable chain, belt tensioner, and a short extension for a Y shaft the author found too short. These details matter because the conversion is not simply a matter of moving stock parts into a new layout; at least some mounting and routing pieces are custom to the build.

The page references a “Hypercube Marlin config 2.0.7.2 with BL touch.” It does not narrate how to configure, compile, flash or validate that firmware for a particular combination of board, motors, endstops and sensor. Do not treat the version reference as a ready-to-use configuration for another machine.

The source is useful for understanding the donor parts and overall direction, but it leaves essential build work unspecified. It does not provide a complete assembly procedure, wiring diagram, power-supply safety instructions, firmware setup, calibration sequence or commissioning checklist. In particular, it does not establish that the listed components are electrically or mechanically compatible with every Da Vinci Jr. variant.

The author also recommends a Torx bit set with multiple sizes for the printer’s Torx screws. That is a practical tool note, not a substitute for identifying fasteners or documenting how to dismantle and rebuild a particular unit.
Is this a good route for your printer?
Use the project as inspiration if you want to reuse donor components and are prepared to design, verify and document the missing engineering steps. A conventional HyperCube-style frame built from scratch is a different route: it avoids relying on the Da Vinci Jr.’s particular frame and parts, while a donor-based route retains selected hardware but still requires additional extrusion, brackets, control hardware and new components. The cited project does not compare either route for cost, build time, safety or print performance, so it cannot establish which is better.
