Steam Proton lets a Steam Deck run many Windows-only games without installing Windows. SteamOS downloads the normal Windows game files, then launches them through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer built from Wine and other components. For a Steam game, install it, check its Deck compatibility badge, and use the game’s Properties > Compatibility page to choose a Proton tool when the default does not work.

Proton is not an emulator that reproduces a complete Windows computer. It translates Windows system calls and presents supported graphics, audio, input, and other interfaces to the game. That design keeps setup simple, but each title and its middleware can behave differently after a game, SteamOS, driver, or Proton update.
How do I run a Windows game from Steam?
For a game purchased in Steam, the basic process is install, check the badge, and test the default tool before changing anything.
- Update SteamOS. Install pending system updates, then restart the Deck. Starting from a current system removes many avoidable compatibility problems.
- Install the game from Steam. Steam Play supplies Proton components for non-native games when compatibility tools are enabled.
- Read the Deck rating. Open the game’s store page or library details and inspect the compatibility badge and its detailed notes, not just the label.
- Launch with the default configuration. Test controller input, the game’s menus, text size, audio, display output, and any online features.

Try an earlier tool after a regression
If a game worked and then stopped after a Proton or game update, record the game version and the Proton tool that was working. Select another installed tool and retest. This is a compatibility check, not a permanent guarantee: a future game or SteamOS update can change the result again.
Use custom Proton builds only as an advanced step
Steam can load a custom Proton build placed in Steam’s compatibilitytools.d directory. This is an advanced path for a known, game-specific fix; new users should first use the versions exposed in Steam’s own Compatibility menu, because custom files add another source of updates and configuration errors.

Yes. Valve confirms that non-Steam games can run through Proton, but the shortcut and installation process is more manual than for a Steam title.
- Switch to Desktop Mode. Install the game with its Windows installer or launcher, following that program’s prompts.
- Add the installed program to Steam. Use Steam’s Add a Non-Steam Game option and select the game executable or its launcher shortcut.
