NodeBots are robots and other physical-computing projects controlled with JavaScript. A common way to build one is with Johnny-Five: Node.js runs your JavaScript, Johnny-Five provides APIs for hardware components, and a compatible board connects that software to LEDs, sensors, motors, and other devices. In a typical Arduino setup, the code runs on your computer and communicates with the board over USB—not on the Arduino itself.

What are NodeBots?

NodeBots describes the community and practice of using JavaScript to control physical machines. Projects can range from a blinking LED to a robot that reads sensors and moves in response. Johnny-Five is a JavaScript robotics and IoT framework used in many NodeBots projects; it provides component APIs that let a program work with supported boards and connected devices.

The parts have distinct jobs:

  • Node.js provides the environment that runs JavaScript outside a web browser.
  • Johnny-Five offers APIs for working with hardware components.
  • A board provides physical inputs and outputs and connects to the software.
  • Firmware or an I/O plugin provides the board-specific communication layer.
  • Components such as LEDs, buttons, sensors, servos, and motors interact with the physical world.

How does JavaScript control an Arduino?

In the usual Johnny-Five Arduino arrangement, Node.js runs on a host computer. The Arduino runs compatible firmware and receives basic input/output commands from the host over USB serial. Johnny-Five’s board support documentation describes this host-based setup and distinguishes it from boards that can run Node.js directly or use a platform-specific I/O plugin: Johnny-Five platform support.

This distinction matters when choosing hardware. Do not assume that every Arduino-compatible board has the same setup, connection, or capabilities. Check the documentation for the exact board and confirm that it supports the functions your project needs, such as digital or analog I/O, PWM, I2C, servos, or motors.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What do you need to get started with Johnny-Five?

  • A computer or supported board environment that can run a supported Node.js release; Johnny-Five recommends Node.js LTS.
  • A board whose current platform instructions match your project and setup.
  • Any required board firmware or I/O plugin.
  • At least one supported component, such as an LED, connected according to the board’s electrical requirements.
  • A project folder where you can install Johnny-Five and run a JavaScript file.

A kit may reduce the effort of finding compatible parts, but check its current contents, documentation, and board compatibility before buying. NodeBots points beginners to the Johnny-Five Inventor’s Kit and Arduino-based kits; its page describes the Inventor’s Kit as supporting 12 robotics and IoT projects. That is the page’s description, not a guarantee about current availability or kit contents: NodeBots.

How to make a first NodeBots project: blink an LED

  1. Choose and set up the board. Read the current instructions for your specific board before connecting it. Confirm the required firmware or runtime, connection method, and supported I/O features in the platform support documentation.
  2. Install Node.js. Use a supported release, preferably the LTS release recommended by Johnny-Five.
  3. Install Johnny-Five in your project. In a terminal opened in the project folder, run npm install johnny-five.
  4. Connect a suitable LED. Follow the board and component instructions for the correct pin, polarity, and any required current-limiting resistor. Do not infer safe wiring from software examples alone.
  5. Run a board-ready LED program. Johnny-Five’s introductory example waits for the board’s ready event before creating an LED object and blinking it. Waiting ensures the program does not try to use the component before the board connection is ready. The official example and setup guidance are at Johnny-Five.

For Arduino, firmware is part of the setup, not an optional detail. The NodeBots page names StandardFirmata, while Johnny-Five setup material identifies StandardFirmataPlus for Arduino. Do not treat those firmware variants as interchangeable by assumption; follow the current instructions for your exact board and Johnny-Five version.

Can you make a robot with Node.js?

Yes. The same general approach can grow from an LED to inputs and movement: read a button or sensor, then use the program’s logic to respond with an indicator, servo, or motor. Johnny-Five documents component classes across these categories in its API reference.

A sensible learning progression is:

  1. Make an LED blink to learn board setup and output control.
  2. Add a button or sensor to read an input.
  3. Use the input to change an output, such as turning on an LED when a button is pressed.
  4. Move on to a servo or motor after checking the board’s support and the component’s power and wiring requirements.

More complex projects depend on the board’s actual I/O capabilities and how JavaScript communicates with it. A component API does not remove the need to check electrical limits, power requirements, and board-specific setup.
