Disable unnecessary startup apps and adjust background permissions only when you are willing to give up that app’s background notifications or syncing. Avoid disabling unfamiliar services or security tools; if memory pressure continues with your normal workload, check whether your specific PC can be upgraded.
Check which apps are using memory before changing settings
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, select the Memory column to sort apps by memory use. For an overview of total memory use, open Performance > Memory. Microsoft recommends monitoring memory and closing apps you are not using, but notes that slow performance can have several causes beyond RAM, including storage constraints, startup apps, outdated software, or hardware limits. Close a high-use app only if you recognize it and can safely exit it. Save your work first. Do not end unfamiliar processes just because their names are unclear; they may support Windows or a feature you rely on.
Disable only startup apps you do not need at sign-in
Apps that launch when you sign in can use memory even before you open them. Review them in either of these locations:

- Task Manager > Startup apps
In Task Manager, startup impact may be labeled None, Not Measured, Low, Medium, or High. These labels describe startup impact; they do not promise a particular amount of RAM savings. Decide based on what each app does as well as its impact. A chat app, cloud-sync client, accessibility tool, security program, or peripheral utility may provide something you depend on. Limit background activity only when delayed updates are acceptable
For apps that expose a background permission, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More options, choose Advanced options, and look for Background app permissions. Depending on the app and Windows release, the available options may include:

Choosing Never means background notifications and updates will not arrive. Many traditional desktop apps do not appear in this list; manage their background behavior in the app’s own settings instead. Microsoft’s background-activity guidance
Close unused apps and browser tabs; restart if memory pressure persists
Close programs and browser tabs you no longer need. If performance still feels poor, save your open work and restart Windows; this clears the current session and may help when an app or process has been running for a long time. If the problem returns with the same set of apps, note which ones are open and when the slowdown begins rather than making random changes. A recurring slowdown may reflect the workload or another performance issue, not just a setting that needs switching. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips

Use a clean boot to investigate a suspected background conflict
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, which can help isolate whether background software is causing a conflict. It is a diagnostic step, not a routine way to run your PC: disabling non-Microsoft services and startup apps can temporarily remove functionality.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.
- Record what you disable and test whether the suspected problem still occurs.
- Restore normal startup settings after testing, especially if the clean boot disables software or features you need.
Consider a RAM upgrade only after checking your PC’s limits
If your usual workload keeps causing memory pressure, more RAM may help, but the right amount depends on the device and what you do with it. Microsoft’s broad guidance suggests 4 GB for primarily browsing, documents, or online video; recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term; and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee for every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft explains that additional memory lets a device do more at once without performance slowdowns. Before buying a compatible RAM upgrade, check your exact computer model’s supported memory type and maximum capacity, and confirm whether its memory is replaceable or upgradeable. A RAM module that works in one PC may not fit another.
