GitHub CLI, the gh command-line tool, brings GitHub tasks into a terminal or script. GitHub introduced it as a beta on February 12, 2020, initially highlighting issues and pull requests. The current manual covers a wider set of command families, so the beta announcement is best read as a snapshot of the launch—not a description of the tool’s current status.
What GitHub announced in February 2020
In its February 12, 2020 announcement, authored by Billy Griffin and updated February 4, 2022, GitHub introduced GitHub CLI as a beta. The post described its aim as bringing GitHub workflows to the command line and invited users to provide feedback. The announcement’s title, “Supercharge your command line experience: GitHub CLI is now in beta,” refers to that launch period; GitHub CLI is not currently described as a beta in the live manual.
The launch post centered on a developer moving through an issue-to-pull-request workflow: finding an issue, making a change, opening a pull request, and responding to review. Its examples showed how terminal commands could handle much of that work while still opening a browser for some details.
What the beta examples showed
Find an issue and inspect it
The announcement demonstrated finding a project and filtering its issues for a “help wanted” label. A user could also open an issue’s details in a browser. This illustrates an important distinction: GitHub CLI can make browser-based work more accessible from the terminal, but a command-line workflow may still hand off to the browser when that is useful.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create and review a pull request
After creating a branch and commits, the example used GitHub CLI to create a pull request. The post described the demonstrated workflow as able to create a fork when one was needed, push the branch, and open the pull request. That is a description of the launch example, not a guarantee that every current setup or configuration follows those steps automatically.
The post also showed checking a pull request’s review and status checks, then checking out its branch to make changes requested during review. Taken together, the examples framed gh as a way to move between local Git work and GitHub-hosted issue and pull-request activity.

What GitHub CLI does now
The current GitHub CLI manual defines gh as a command-line interface to GitHub for use in a terminal or scripts. Its command index goes well beyond the issue-and-pull-request focus of the beta post.
| Command area | What the manual lists |
|---|---|
| Account and access | Authentication with gh auth |
| Collaboration | Issues, pull requests, discussions, and projects |
| Repositories and releases | Repository and release commands |
| Automation | Actions runs with gh run and workflow commands with gh workflow |
| Other capabilities | Codespaces and search |
Use the manual’s command index for current syntax, options, and behavior; command details can change over time. For installation, the manual points to GitHub’s official cli/cli repository, which is a better source for current packages and instructions than the operating-system availability mentioned in the 2020 beta post.

How to get started with `gh`
- Install it using current instructions. Follow the installation guidance in the official cli/cli repository. The 2020 announcement said the beta was available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, but that historical statement should not substitute for current package instructions.
- Authenticate. For an interactive login, use
gh auth login. The manual also documents authentication through theGITHUB_TOKENenvironment variable, which can suit scripts. - Choose an editor if needed. Set a preferred editor with
gh config set editor <editor>. - Look up the command for your task. Use the manual to find the current command and flags for issues, pull requests, repositories, workflows, or another supported area.
GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server
The launch announcement said GitHub Team and Enterprise Cloud were supported during the beta, while GitHub Enterprise Server was not yet available at that time. Those are launch-era availability notes, not current account-plan guidance.
The current manual says GitHub CLI supports GitHub Enterprise Server version 2.20 and above. To authenticate to an Enterprise Server host, it documents gh auth login --hostname <hostname>; for scripts, it documents the GH_ENTERPRISE_TOKEN environment variable. Check the manual for host-specific details and current requirements.

When a terminal workflow is useful
GitHub CLI is useful when the task fits a command, when you want to stay near your local Git work, or when you want to automate a GitHub operation in a script. Its value depends on the task: issue triage, pull-request review, repository administration, and automation are distinct workflows, even though they can all be accessed through gh.
- Interactive work: Commands can help you move quickly through familiar tasks, while a browser remains available for pages or details you want to inspect visually.
- Scripting: The manual explicitly supports terminal or script use and documents token-based authentication. Confirm the command’s behavior and authentication requirements before incorporating it into automation.
- Host choice: Distinguish GitHub.com from an Enterprise Server host; the manual gives separate host and token guidance for Enterprise Server.
GitHub’s announcement and manual do not establish a measured productivity or time-saving figure for GitHub CLI. The practical case for using it is its command coverage and fit with a developer’s existing terminal or scripting workflow, rather than a quantified performance claim.
