To enable nested virtualization for an AMD Ryzen host’s VirtualBox VM, power the VM off and turn on Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V under Settings > System > Processor. You can make the same per-VM change with VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nested-hw-virt=on. This passes supported host virtualization features to the guest; it does not guarantee that every nested hypervisor or feature will work.
Before changing the setting
- Shut down the target VM completely. A running, paused, or saved VM may prevent you from changing the setting.
- Make sure AMD virtualization is exposed by the host’s BIOS/UEFI firmware. The menu location varies by motherboard, so use its documentation rather than relying on a universal navigation path.
Enable nested virtualization in VirtualBox Manager
- Open VirtualBox Manager and select the VM you want to configure.
- Open Settings > System > Processor.
- Check Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V, then save the setting and start the VM.
- Inside the guest, check whether the hypervisor or virtualization-dependent feature you intend to use detects hardware virtualization.
Oracle describes the control as making hardware virtualization functions available to the guest. The setting is per VM, so enabling it for one VM does not change the others. See the Oracle VirtualBox 7.2 User Guide; that linked edition is 7.2.0 Beta 1, so consult the manual for your installed release if labels or command behavior differ.
Enable it with VBoxManage
Use the VBoxManage command-line utility included with VirtualBox:
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nested-hw-virt=onReplace VM name with the VM’s registered name. Keep the quotation marks if the name contains spaces, and verify the name carefully so the command targets the intended VM. Oracle documents --nested-hw-virt=on and --nested-hw-virt=off for enabling and disabling the same per-VM setting. The command must be run while the VM is powered off.

What the setting does—and does not—promise
Nested virtualization lets a guest use hardware virtualization features to run another hypervisor or virtualization-dependent software. It is a passthrough setting, not a compatibility guarantee. Oracle notes: “Hardware virtualization features not present on the host CPU will not be exposed to the guest.” Oracle also identifies nested paging among the features not supported for passthrough. As a result, a guest may detect virtualization but still lack a feature required by a particular nested product. See the Oracle VirtualBox 7.2 User Guide for the documented limits.
AMD Ryzen note: virtualized VMSAVE/VMLOAD
Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.0.24 manual documents the AMD-host option --virt-vmsave-vmload. It is enabled by default when hardware virtualization is enabled on an AMD CPU, and Oracle recommends leaving it enabled because it has a drastic impact on nested VM performance. This is a performance recommendation, not a stated prerequisite for turning on nested virtualization. See the Oracle VirtualBox 7.0.24 manual.

If the guest still cannot use virtualization
- Confirm the VM is fully powered off when you change its setting, then start it again.
- Check that AMD virtualization is enabled and exposed in the host firmware; consult your motherboard documentation for the relevant menu.
- Check the VirtualBox version and its manual for the exact setting and command supported by that release.
- Confirm the guest CPU features visible to the nested product and compare them with that product’s requirements.
- Do not assume that a checked box guarantees support for a particular hypervisor, including Hyper-V, on every Ryzen and VirtualBox combination.
