ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks, Claude Cowork scheduled tasks, Gemini Apps scheduled actions, and Microsoft Copilot Tasks or Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts can all handle work on a schedule, but they differ in what continues when you close the app, which accounts qualify, and what permissions they need. Choose by the specific task surface available in your account—not by assuming every feature from a provider works the same way. Product documentation describes capabilities; it does not establish which assistant is most reliable or produces the best results.
What “without leaving a chat open” means
A scheduled task lets an assistant prepare or perform work at a future time without requiring you to keep the conversation actively open. The precise behavior varies. Anthropic explicitly says Claude Cowork scheduled runs continue when the computer is asleep or Claude Desktop is closed. Google says Gemini prepares scheduled-action content in the background. OpenAI and Microsoft document scheduled tasks or prompts, but their setup, account, and permission conditions still apply.
This is not the same as giving an assistant unrestricted, permanent access to every connected account or file. A schedule may be limited by app connections, authorization, workspace policy, approvals, or the task’s need for additional input.

How to choose for your recurring task
For a daily briefing or recurring update
Start with the cadence you need. Gemini documents daily, weekly, and monthly actions. ChatGPT’s documented recurrence frequency depends on plan, while Microsoft describes selected times or recurring schedules. Claude Cowork supports recurring work, but check its current scheduling options in your account. If an exact interval matters, confirm it in the product before building a routine around it.

For research, reports, or work across connected apps
Compare the connectors and permissions on the exact surface you intend to use. Claude Cowork tasks can use configured connectors, skills, and plugins; ChatGPT can use some connected apps when available; Gemini actions that use another app require that app to be connected. A connection is not a guarantee that every action is permitted: authorization, administrator policy, or an approval step may still apply.
For runs while your computer is asleep
Claude Cowork is the clearest documented fit when this condition is essential: Anthropic says scheduled runs continue while the computer sleeps or Claude Desktop is closed. Google documents background preparation of Gemini action content. The OpenAI and Microsoft pages describe scheduled work but do not establish the same explicit device-sleep behavior in the documentation cited here.

For a workflow that may need human sign-off
Microsoft says setup for Copilot Tasks may obtain approvals required for future unattended operation. More generally, treat approvals and permissions as part of the workflow design: an assistant may be able to prepare a report but not take a consequential action until access is granted or a person approves it.
ChatGPT plan limits and recurrence
OpenAI’s Scheduled Tasks help page, updated “yesterday” relative to the source search retrieved on October 3, 2026, lists these active-task limits: Free and Go, 3; Plus, 5; Business and Edu, 10; Pro and Enterprise, 15. OpenAI says other eligible plans may vary by account or workspace. The same page says eligible paid plans support recurring schedules as often as once per hour, while Free recurrence is no more frequent than daily. These are product limits, not general market figures, and may change; verify them on OpenAI’s current help page and in your account before relying on them.

Set up a task so it is useful and recoverable
- Choose the product surface. Identify whether you are using ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks, Claude Cowork, Gemini Apps scheduled actions, Copilot Tasks, or Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts. Do not assume instructions for one surface apply to another.
- Check access first. Confirm the account, plan, rollout status, and workspace policy. For Gemini, check that Keep Activity is on and connect any app the action needs. For Cowork, configure the connectors, skills, or plugins the task depends on.
- Specify the schedule and deliverable. State the cadence and time, what the assistant should produce or monitor, and where the result should appear. Use a narrow first task—such as a daily briefing or weekly report—so you can inspect whether the output meets your needs.
- Authorize only necessary actions. Review connected-app access and any approval requests. If the task is expected to act unattended, make sure its permissions cover the intended work and understand which steps still require your approval.
- Review status and results. Check the task’s history or status rather than assuming a scheduled run succeeded. In ChatGPT, a task can be paused after inactivity, when additional action is required, or when its associated chat is deleted. Resolve the underlying issue and resume or recreate the task if needed; Microsoft setup may also depend on approvals.
What the documentation cannot tell you
Official help pages establish what vendors say their features support, not comparative reliability, latency, output quality, or recovery performance under real workloads. The cited documentation does not support naming one assistant the overall best. Test the exact recurring task, app connections, and account you plan to use, and inspect its results and status before depending on it for important work.
