What WordPress.com and WP Engine actually provide
WordPress.com is hosted WordPress
WordPress.com is a hosted version of the open-source WordPress software. The host manages the server layer, SSL certificates, security protection, storage, performance features, and automatic updates. You operate WordPress through its dashboard rather than provisioning a separate server.
Paid plans can use custom or third-party themes and plugins, including WooCommerce and SEO plugins. Compatibility is not unlimited: some plugins are excluded when they conflict with platform features or duplicate functionality that WordPress.com already supplies.

Current pricing, capacity, and renewal questions
WordPress.com Premium and Business
The current WordPress.com pricing page lists Premium at US$18 per month when billed monthly or US$8 per month when billed annually. Business is US$40 per month monthly or US$25 per month on an annual-equivalent basis, excluding taxes. Business includes 50 GB of storage, plugin access, and 24/7 priority expert support.
At those displayed rates, Premium costs US$216 over twelve monthly payments or about US$96 when the annual rate is paid for a year. Business is US$480 on monthly billing versus US$300 at the annual-equivalent rate. Those are simple comparisons of the published rates, not guarantees about renewal pricing, promotions, taxes, or currency conversion.
An older comparison snapshot presents Business at $20 per month against a WP Engine Startup figure of $25, with 50 GB versus 10 GB storage, unlimited versus 75 GB monthly bandwidth, and priority expert support versus live chat. That snapshot was last verified September 30, 2024; use the current pricing page rather than those historical figures when checking out.
WP Engine Essential and Business
WP Engine Essential starts at US$28 per month billed annually, with US$336 charged at signup. It includes daily automated backups, 24/7 chat, managed WordPress/PHP/MySQL, free SSL, and SSH. The current page presents Business pricing through sales rather than a fixed public monthly number.
WP Engine estimates Essential capacity at 25,000–400,000 visits per month, 10–50 GB storage, and 75 GB bandwidth. Business is estimated at 400,000–800,000 visits, 50 GB–2 TB storage, and 550 GB bandwidth. These ranges describe plan capacity, not a guaranteed number of visitors: page weight, caching, bot traffic, and application behavior affect actual use.
Calculate the real cost, not the headline rate
Before choosing a host, request or confirm these items in writing:
- Renewal price after the first monthly or annual term.
- Whether taxes, premium security, web-application-firewall or DDoS features, and plugin-update services are included.
- What happens when storage, visits, or bandwidth exceed the plan estimate.
- Whether staging sites, extra environments, additional sites, or migration assistance incur fees.
- Which users and plans receive phone support.
An annual-equivalent rate can look lower because the full year is charged immediately. Compare the amount charged today and the renewal amount with the same billing period on both services. Also check whether a plan is priced per site, per installation, or for a bundle of sites; an agency with ten small installations can have a very different effective cost from a business running one large store.

Do not compare a 75 GB bandwidth allowance directly with an unmetered claim without measuring your actual traffic mix. A media-heavy site can consume bandwidth quickly even with modest page views, while a highly cached text site may serve many more visits from a smaller allowance. Ask how bots, cached responses, video, backups, and staging traffic are counted.
Can you install any plugin on WordPress.com?
WordPress.com plugin access
Paid WordPress.com plans can upload custom or third-party plugins and themes. WooCommerce and SEO plugins such as Yoast Premium are examples of supported categories. The qualification matters: the platform maintains a compatibility boundary. A plugin may be unavailable when it conflicts with built-in caching, security, backups, or another managed feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a planned site, make a list of required plugins before subscribing and check each one against the host’s current compatibility documentation. A plugin that works on self-hosted WordPress is not automatically supported on a managed platform.
Check more than the plugin’s name. Confirm its required PHP version, external API calls, cron frequency, background processing, file-writing behavior, object-cache assumptions, and use of server-level rewrites. Membership, search, analytics, multilingual, and image-optimization plugins can depend on precisely those functions. If a replacement is required, budget time to migrate settings and test existing content rather than assuming that activating a substitute preserves every feature.
WP Engine plugin access and responsibility
WP Engine permits custom plugins and themes and gives developers more control over staging and deployment. Its support team can help identify server-side causes and analyze logs, but plugin or theme functionality bugs, and conflicts with WordPress core or custom code, are outside its stated support scope. You retain responsibility for testing third-party code.
This boundary matters during an incident. WP Engine may confirm that PHP is running, inspect a fatal-error log, or explain a cache setting, but your developer or plugin vendor generally must fix a broken shortcode, payment extension, JavaScript error, or incompatibility introduced by custom code. WordPress.com has a similar boundary for third-party components, so neither plan replaces application-level maintenance.
Automatic plugin and theme updates
WP Engine lists an optional AI-powered update service for Essential. It performs visual-regression checks and can roll back an update; Business and Enterprise include one license. Confirm the license count and whether additional sites require an add-on. WordPress.com manages WordPress and PHP updates as part of its platform, while plugin-update behavior depends on the plan and the plugin itself.
Automatic updates reduce routine work but do not eliminate release management. Keep a staging copy, define who reviews visual-regression alerts, and verify transactions and forms after an update. A rollback can restore files and database state, but it cannot undo an email sent, an order captured by a payment gateway, or a third-party service changed at the same time.
Backups, security, and performance
WordPress.com protections
WordPress.com documentation describes daily site backups, with backups sometimes occurring more frequently during substantial changes. Business and Commerce customers have direct restore access. SSL certificates are issued and renewed automatically, and WordPress and PHP updates are managed by the platform.

WordPress.com comparison materials advertise real-time backups for Business, one-click restores, a global CDN, unmetered traffic and bandwidth, high-burst capacity, and a bundled security suite. Those are provider descriptions; they should not be read as an independently measured speed or security guarantee.
WP Engine protections
WP Engine provides automatic and on-demand backups retained for no less than 30 days and no longer than 60 days, along with a global CDN, EverCache, one-click staging, and automatic WordPress and PHP updates. Isolated-resource plans carry the documented 99.99% uptime SLA. Ask sales to define exclusions, credits, and measurement windows before relying on the SLA for a business commitment.
A 99.99% monthly availability target allows roughly 4 minutes and 23 seconds of downtime in a 30-day month, subject to the contract’s exclusions and measurement method. It is not a promise that every page will be fast, nor does it automatically compensate lost sales. Likewise, a CDN and page cache improve cacheable responses but do not solve slow uncached database queries, oversized images, third-party scripts, or poorly tuned checkout code.
What to verify for a critical site
- Can you restore a specific point in time yourself, or must support perform the restore?
- Are database-only and file-only restores available?
- How long are staging and production backups retained?
- Are backups stored separately from the production account?
- Which security controls are bundled, and which require an add-on?
- Are malware cleanup, firewall rules, rate limiting, and DDoS response included or separately priced?
- How are backup restores tested, and can you download a copy for an independent archive?
For a store or membership site, document the recovery point you can tolerate. Restoring yesterday’s full backup may remove today’s orders or user registrations. Ask whether transaction data can be exported before a restore and whether the host can restore to a temporary environment for selective recovery.
Staging, migrations, and developer controls
When WordPress.com is sufficient
WordPress.com suits teams that make routine content and configuration changes through the dashboard and want hosting operations handled for them. Built-in backups and staging on applicable plans reduce the need to assemble separate operational tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen WP Engine has the edge
WP Engine’s one-click staging and development environments let a team test a theme, plugin, PHP version, or code change before publishing. SSH and SFTP support accommodate scripted deployments and file access. Business adds managed migrations and isolated resources, useful when several client sites or high-traffic applications must be kept separate.
Ask what “managed migration” includes: source-host access, DNS changes, email, cron jobs, redirects, multisite networks, and post-migration testing may be handled differently. Obtain a written scope rather than assuming every application component moves automatically. Lower DNS TTL in advance, preserve the old host during propagation, and schedule a final database sync for sites that receive orders or submissions continuously.
A safer change workflow
- Create a fresh backup and record the current WordPress, PHP, theme, and plugin versions.
- Clone or push the site to staging using the host’s built-in workflow.
- Apply updates or code changes in staging, then test checkout, forms, logins, search, media, redirects, and scheduled tasks.
- Review visual differences and server logs; resolve plugin conflicts before deployment.
- Publish during a low-traffic window and keep the pre-change backup until production verification is complete.
Staging is not automatically production-equivalent. Payment gateways may be disabled, webhooks may point to test accounts, search indexes may be blocked, and scheduled jobs may be paused. Record those differences in the release checklist so a green staging test does not hide a production-only failure.
Support: chat, tickets, and phone access
WordPress.com support scope
Paid WordPress.com plans receive fast expert support 24/7. Support covers hosted-site troubleshooting, built-in backups and staging, block-editor questions, and platform-code issues. It does not cover third-party plugins, themes, or tools that WordPress.com did not purchase or manage. Free-plan users rely on public community forums.

WP Engine support scope
Customers start live chat from the User Portal. Phone support is unavailable for Lite and Startup and appears only on plans that include it; eligibility should be confirmed for the exact plan and account. Most accounts cannot open support tickets themselves, while Premium Plus users can.
WP Engine supports platform features, caching, backups, migrations, SFTP, and performance issues. As with WordPress.com, third-party plugin and theme functionality bugs and conflicts are outside the normal support boundary. Agencies should therefore budget for their own developer support when a client site’s custom code fails.
When opening a case, provide the URL, timestamps with time zone, affected user role, exact error text, recent deployment, reproduction steps, and a request ID or order number if relevant. Avoid sending passwords or payment data. A precise incident report helps the host separate DNS, cache, PHP, database, and application faults without exposing sensitive credentials.
Which host is better for each type of WordPress site?
Choose WordPress.com for a creator or small business
WordPress.com is the more convenient choice when one provider should handle SSL, updates, backups, security, CDN delivery, and support. Business is especially attractive if you need plugin access, 50 GB storage, and 24/7 priority help without assembling separate services.

The Business comparison materials advertise unmetered traffic and bandwidth and high-burst capacity. That can simplify budgeting for a campaign or news spike, but confirm fair-use language and any technical limits before treating “unmetered” as unlimited compute.
Choose WP Engine for an agency or development team
WP Engine is the stronger fit when staging, SSH/SFTP, managed migrations, predictable capacity bands, and isolated resources matter more than a single bundled dashboard. Business’s phone support and 99.99% SLA can be valuable for client-facing operations, provided your contract confirms eligibility.
Agencies should also compare account administration: who can access each installation, how staging URLs are protected, how client billing is separated, and whether the plan’s site and environment limits match the number of active projects. A cheaper single-site plan can become expensive if every client needs its own staging environment or support entitlement.
Choose based on WooCommerce requirements
Both platforms can host WooCommerce: WordPress.com explicitly includes it among the plugins available on paid plans, while WP Engine permits custom plugins and themes. A store should compare checkout compatibility, object caching, cron behavior, staging data handling, payment extensions, backup restore procedures, and support responsibility for each extension. Hosting permission alone does not establish that every WooCommerce extension is supported.

A practical decision checklist
- Inventory the site: record monthly visits, peak bursts, storage, bandwidth, PHP version, database size, plugins, themes, cron jobs, and integrations.
- Classify your work: dashboard publishing favors WordPress.com; code-heavy release cycles favor WP Engine’s staging and access controls.
- Map support ownership: mark every component as host-managed, third-party, or your team’s responsibility.
- Compare annual totals: include taxes, renewal rates, add-ons, extra environments, and overage rules.
- Test migration and restore: request a migration scope and verify that the restore point you need will be available on your chosen plan.
- Get plan-specific answers: ask about plugin compatibility, phone-support eligibility, backup retention, security add-ons, and uptime-SLA terms before checkout.
- Run a trial release: stage a representative update, restore a backup to a safe environment, and document the time required for your team to recover.
- Assign ownership: name the person responsible for renewals, DNS, plugin updates, incident communication, and cancellation so operational tasks do not disappear between vendor and agency.
Bottom line: WordPress.com or WP Engine?
WordPress.com is the better default for a creator, small business, publisher, or store that values an integrated managed service, paid-plan plugin access, unmetered-traffic claims, and 24/7 expert support. WP Engine is worth the higher starting price when your organization needs capacity planning, isolated resources, one-click staging, managed migrations, and developer-oriented operations. The decisive comparison is not the promotional monthly number; it is the renewal bill, operational controls, backup recovery, plugin responsibility, and support channel included in the exact plan you will buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for hosting WordPress, WordPress.com or WP Engine?
WordPress.com is usually better for creators, small businesses, publishers, and stores that want bundled security, backups, plugin access, unmetered-traffic claims, and 24/7 expert support. WP Engine is usually better for agencies and development teams that need capacity tiers, isolated resources, staging, managed migrations, SSH/SFTP, and an eligible-plan uptime SLA.
How much does WordPress.com Business cost?
The displayed 2026 price is US$40 per month on monthly billing or US$25 per month on an annual-equivalent basis, before taxes. That is US$480 versus about US$300 for a year at the displayed rates. Confirm renewal pricing and included add-ons before checkout.
Can I install any plugin on WordPress.com?
Paid plans allow custom and third-party plugins, including WooCommerce and SEO plugins, but not every plugin is compatible. Check the current compatibility list and verify PHP, caching, cron, API, and file-writing requirements before migrating.
Does WP Engine include phone support?
Phone support is plan-dependent. It is unavailable for Lite and Startup and appears on eligible higher plans such as Business. Confirm the entitlement for your exact account; live chat is available through the User Portal.
Is WP Engine worth the higher price?
It can be worth it when staging, managed migrations, isolated resources, capacity planning, SSH/SFTP, and phone support or a 99.99% SLA have business value. A smaller site focused on simple publishing may get better value from WordPress.com’s bundled plan, especially after comparing renewal prices.
Which host is better for agencies or WooCommerce?
WP Engine generally suits agencies with repeatable development and deployment workflows. Both hosts can run WooCommerce, but the decision should turn on extension compatibility, cron and cache behavior, staging data controls, restore procedures, and who supports each payment or fulfillment integration.
Recommended Free Tools
How long does WP Engine retain backups?
WP Engine lists automatic and on-demand backups retained for no less than 30 days and no longer than 60 days. Ask whether the retention window, restore method, and available restore points differ by plan or environment.
Are WordPress.com and WP Engine performance claims independently tested here?
No independent speed or uptime benchmark is established in this comparison. CDN, caching, burst capacity, unmetered traffic, security, and uptime figures should be treated as provider descriptions or plan estimates and checked against the current contract.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick WordPress.com for a simpler all-in-one managed experience and 24/7 expert help. Pick WP Engine when staging, migrations, isolated capacity, and developer controls justify the extra cost. Compare renewal totals, plugin responsibility, restore access, limits, and phone-support eligibility on the exact plan before signing up.
