To verify your current U.S. voter registration details, use your state or territory’s official voter lookup—not a document checklist. Start at USAGov’s voter registration status page or Vote.gov and follow the link to your election authority. A voter registration card can confirm that you were registered, but it may not show whether your record is still current, and you do not need to bring it to vote.
Which document is best for checking your current registration?
The state or territory election office’s online voter record is the best place to check whether you are registered and whether the details on file are correct. USAGov directs voters to Can I Vote: choose “voter registration status,” select your state, and continue to its election website. Review the information the state displays, such as your registration status, name, address, party affiliation where shown, and polling place. Lookup fields and available details vary by state.
There is no single nationwide list of documents you must present just to look up your registration. If the online service cannot find your record or you cannot use it, contact the state or local election office using the contact information on its official website.
What different documents can—and cannot—do

Card practices and formats differ by state. If you never received a card or have misplaced it, check the official lookup or ask your election office rather than assuming you are unregistered.

How to verify your registration details
- Open USAGov’s voter registration status page or Vote.gov, then choose the link to your state or territory’s official election website.
- Use the lookup options provided by that election authority. Enter information exactly as requested and review the status and details shown.
- If the record is missing, inactive, or incorrect, follow the state’s instructions to update it or contact your local election office promptly. A name or address change may require an update; an inactive record may require additional steps.
- After the election office processes a change, check the official record again. Processing and correction timelines are state-specific; do not assume an update is immediate.
Check well before your state’s registration deadline for the election you plan to vote in. Deadlines differ by state and election, and an online lookup does not itself change your record.
Why lookup requirements differ by state
Each state provides its own lookup method and may accept different search details. For example, Texas’s registration FAQ says voters can search using the VUID printed on a voter registration certificate, a Texas driver’s-license number previously supplied on the registration application, or first and last name. Texas voters can also contact their county voter registrar. Those options describe Texas, not a nationwide rule.

California’s Secretary of State offers an online registration-status check and notes that some county election offices also provide checks online, by phone, or both. Use your own state’s election authority for the applicable method.

Checking the registration record and satisfying an identification requirement when registering or voting are separate tasks. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s instructions for the federal voter registration form say that certain first-time voters who register by mail may need to show identification the first time they vote. Examples listed include a current valid photo ID or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document showing the voter’s name and address. That guidance concerns the stated first-time-by-mail situation; state rules may add requirements. It is not a universal checklist for looking up registration details.

If your election office asks you for documents to correct or confirm a particular record, follow that office’s instructions. The documents required depend on the state and the issue being resolved.
