GIMP and Krita can use AI for background removal, upscaling, prompt-based edits, image generation and reference editing, but those capabilities are mostly add-ons rather than features built into the editors. GIMP is the closer open-source alternative for Photoshop-style raster and layer work. Krita is the stronger choice for digital painting and illustration. In both applications, a plugin sends a layer to a local model or server and places the result back on the canvas, usually as a new layer.

What AI features are actually included?

Neither editor presents a single, subscription-backed generative system that is equivalent to an all-in-one commercial package. The distinction between the editor and the AI extension matters: GIMP or Krita supplies the canvas, layers, masks, color handling and file support, while a separate plugin supplies model access and AI operations.

Editor Native focus AI supplied by Best fit
GIMP Raster editing, compositing, retouching and layer-based image work Third-party or separately installed plugins Photographs, composites and Photoshop-style layer workflows
Krita Digital painting, brushes, layers, masking, color management, HDR painting, PSD support, GPU acceleration and Python scripting Extensions such as the open-source Krita AI Diffusion project Illustration, concept art and painted edits that need AI assistance

Because these are extension workflows, supported model formats, installation procedures and compatibility can change independently of the editor. Check the plugin project’s current documentation before installing it, and treat model licenses as separate from the editor’s license.

GIMP’s AI capabilities

The documented GIMP 3 AI plugin collection covers four distinct operations. Each one works by exporting a selected layer, processing it outside the core editor, and importing the result as a layer. Your original pixels remain available, so you can compare, mask or blend the AI output instead of committing to a destructive edit.

1. Background removal

The background-removal workflow exports the active layer and runs the backgroundremover command-line model. The plugin then imports the result as a transparent layer. This is useful for product cutouts, portraits and compositing because the subject and removed background become separable from the original image.

  1. Open the image in GIMP and duplicate the source layer so the untouched pixels remain available.
  2. Install the GIMP AI plugin and its backgroundremover dependency according to the project’s instructions.
  3. Select the layer to process and start the background-removal operation.
  4. Inspect the imported transparent layer at high zoom, especially around hair, thin objects, shadows and semi-transparent edges.
  5. Use a layer mask or ordinary brush cleanup for corrections rather than painting over the source layer.

The model produces a starting mask, not a guarantee of perfect edge quality. Fine manual cleanup is still part of a professional cutout workflow.

2. AI upscaling

For enlargement, the plugin exports the selected layer and runs a PyTorch upscaler through one of its supported backends. A higher-resolution layer is then imported into the document. Upscaling can make a small source more usable for print or a larger layout, but it synthesizes detail; it cannot recover information that was never captured.

  1. Keep the original layer and make a duplicate for enlargement.
  2. Install the plugin’s required PyTorch backend and the model files it supports.
  3. Run the upscaler on the duplicate layer and wait for the generated layer to return.
  4. Compare fine textures, text, faces and repetitive patterns against the original at 100% zoom.
  5. Use the result selectively with a mask when some areas benefit from enlargement and others show invented detail.

Processing time and memory use depend on the model, image dimensions and backend. The documentation does not establish a universal scale factor or benchmark, so do not assume that every model delivers the same enlargement quality.

3. Prompt-based editing inside GIMP

Prompt-based editing sends the layer to sd-cli together with a diffusion GGUF model, a vision-language model and a VAE. The edited image returns to GIMP as a new layer. This arrangement can support changes such as restyling, object variation or guided alterations while preserving the source below the generated result.

  1. Install the plugin and obtain compatible diffusion, vision-language and VAE files in the formats it expects.
  2. Configure the paths or runtime settings required by sd-cli.
  3. Duplicate the source layer and select the copy as the input.
  4. Describe the intended change in the prompt and run the edit.
  5. Review the generated layer against the source, lowering opacity or masking areas that should remain unchanged.

The exact models and parameters are determined by the plugin and the files you install. A prompt-based edit is therefore not a fixed GIMP feature; changing the model can change the style, fidelity, speed and licensing terms.

4. Stable Diffusion server integration

The plugin can call an HTTP Stable Diffusion server instead of running every model component inside GIMP. It documents text-to-image, image-to-image and reference-editing workflows.

  • Text-to-image: create a new image from a written description.
  • Image-to-image: provide an existing layer as a visual starting point for a generated variation.
  • Reference editing: use a reference image to guide the result while changing other aspects of the composition.

In this arrangement, GIMP is the client and the server performs inference. The server may be on the same computer or elsewhere on your network; the plugin’s configuration determines the endpoint. A remote endpoint changes the privacy and operational-cost profile because image data leaves the local machine.

OpenVINO-based GIMP extensions

Intel’s OpenVINO GIMP repository separately provides OpenVINO-based plugins, including a Stable Diffusion image generator. This is another example of an extension rather than a capability guaranteed by every GIMP installation. It may use a different runtime, model format and hardware path from the GIMP 3 AI collection, so install and compatibility requirements must be checked for the specific repository and editor release.

What Krita provides natively, and what the AI plugin adds

Krita’s official feature set is centered on painting rather than generative AI. Its native tools include brush and layer management, color management, HDR painting, PSD support, GPU acceleration and Python scripting. Those tools let you paint, mask, transform and composite manually without an AI model.

Krita AI Diffusion

The open-source krita-ai project adds model-based image generation through a Krita plugin. Its README targets Krita 5.2 or newer. The plugin’s diffusion workflow can be used for generated imagery and edits while Krita remains the place where you draw selections, manage layers and refine the output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Krita 5.2 or a newer compatible release.
  2. Install the Krita AI plugin and follow its current instructions for the required backend and model files.
  3. Choose whether the model runs locally or through a configured service, if the plugin supports both for your setup.
  4. Create or select a layer, define the area or reference the plugin should use, and submit the generation or edit.
  5. Keep the returned result on a separate layer so Krita’s masks, blending modes and paint-over tools remain available.

Krita’s brushes, stabilizers, masks and selection tools are still doing the ordinary creative work. The AI extension supplies model inference; it does not turn every native Krita operation into generative editing.

How these workflows differ from a unified commercial editor

In a unified commercial editor, generative controls normally appear as part of one maintained product and account system. In GIMP and Krita, the editor and model runtime are separate pieces. A plugin invokes a local process or an HTTP service, then writes the response back into the document.

Decision point Open-source editor workflow What you must verify
Where AI runs On your computer through a local runtime, or on a configured server Model location, network access and whether images leave the machine
What is installed Editor plus plugin, dependencies, runtime and model files Editor version, operating-system support and backend compatibility
How results return Usually as an imported or generated layer Whether masks, alpha and resolution are preserved as expected
Who maintains each part Editor maintainers, plugin maintainers and model authors may be different Project activity, issue status and update cadence
What the license covers Editor, plugin, runtime and model can each have different terms Permission for personal, commercial and redistributed work

This separation can improve control and local privacy, but it also transfers setup and maintenance responsibility to you. A new editor release may require a plugin update; a model download may have its own usage restrictions; and a local workflow may need substantial storage and graphics resources.

Local model or server: which arrangement should you use?

Local inference

A local model keeps processing on the computer where GIMP or Krita is running. It is attractive when source images are confidential, when you need repeatable offline work, or when you want to avoid per-request hosted charges. The trade-off is that you must download model files, install the runtime, provide adequate GPU or CPU resources, and troubleshoot drivers and memory limits.

Server-based inference

A server can centralize model files and move heavy computation away from the editing workstation. GIMP’s Stable Diffusion integration uses HTTP calls and supports text-to-image, image-to-image and reference-editing operations. A server can be local to your network or remote. For a remote service, check where images are stored, how long they are retained, who can access the endpoint and whether fees apply.

Installation and first-run checklist

The exact buttons and package names vary by plugin, but the sequence below prevents most avoidable failures.

  1. Choose the editor for the work. Select GIMP for raster retouching, compositing and Photoshop-style layer editing. Select Krita when brush-based painting and illustration are central.
  2. Confirm the editor version. Use a current GIMP 3 build for the GIMP 3 collection. For Krita AI Diffusion, meet the project’s stated requirement of Krita 5.2 or newer.
  3. Read the plugin’s installation instructions. Identify the supported operating systems, runtime, model formats, Python or command-line dependencies and any server requirement before downloading files.
  4. Install one backend first. Start with a single local runtime or server so you can identify whether a failure comes from the plugin, the model or the network.
  5. Download compatible models. Match the model, VAE and vision-language files to the plugin’s documented formats. Keep a record of each model’s license and source.
  6. Run a small test document. Use a modest image and a duplicated layer to verify that the plugin can export, process and re-import a result.
  7. Inspect the returned layer. Check dimensions, alpha, color appearance, masks and file size before using the workflow on a large project.
  8. Save an editable master. Preserve the original layer and the generated layer in the editor’s native format, then export a flattened copy only when needed.

Requirements, costs and maintenance

The editors themselves are free and open source, but an AI setup is not cost-free in practical terms. You may need disk space for model files, a capable GPU or a slower CPU path, operating-system packages, Python or command-line runtimes, and time to maintain compatibility. A hosted server can replace local hardware requirements but may introduce usage charges or data-governance concerns.

  • Hardware: inference speed and the maximum workable image size depend on the model, backend and available graphics memory. No single hardware specification applies to every plugin.
  • Storage: models, caches and generated intermediates can occupy substantially more space than the editor installation.
  • Dependencies: backgroundremover, PyTorch backends, sd-cli, VAE files and server components are separate from GIMP itself.
  • Updates: editor releases, plugin changes, model formats and graphics drivers can get out of sync.
  • Licensing: verify the terms for the editor, plugin, runtime and every model before commercial or redistributed use.

Common problems and practical fixes

The plugin does not appear in the menus

Confirm that the plugin was installed in the extension location used by your editor version, then restart the editor. Official GIMP packages are described as “vanilla” builds that rely on extension points, so an AI feature will not appear merely because GIMP is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model or runtime errors occur at launch

Check that every configured file exists and matches the format expected by the plugin. A diffusion model, VAE or vision-language model from an incompatible family can fail even when the filename looks plausible. Recheck the project’s version requirements before changing multiple components at once.

The operation runs out of memory

Try a smaller test image, a less demanding model or a CPU-compatible backend if available. Close other GPU-heavy applications and process one layer at a time. Do not delete the original layer to save memory until you have verified the generated result.

The result has halos or incorrect details

Background removal often needs edge cleanup around hair, transparent objects and shadows. Upscaling and diffusion can invent texture or alter lettering. Use masks, opacity and manual brush work to constrain the generated layer, and compare it with the source at actual-pixel size.

A server request fails

Verify the server is running, the configured HTTP address is reachable, and the server exposes the operation the plugin is calling. For remote servers, check firewall rules, authentication and whether the image payload exceeds a request-size limit.

Which open-source alternative is best for AI image editing?

Choose GIMP when raster editing is the priority

GIMP is the better starting point for photographers, compositors and retouchers who need layer-based edits, transparent cutouts, enlargement or Stable Diffusion calls. Its documented AI collection directly addresses background removal, upscaling, prompt-based editing and server integration.

Choose Krita when painting is the priority

Krita is the better fit for illustrators and concept artists who want a mature brush and masking environment, PSD compatibility and scripting, with diffusion generation added through Krita AI Diffusion. The AI feature is an extension workflow and requires Krita 5.2 or newer according to that project’s README.

Choose based on the model and privacy requirements

If local processing and control over model files matter most, plan for hardware, storage and maintenance. If you prefer centralized inference, use a configured Stable Diffusion server and evaluate its network, retention and cost implications. In either case, judge the plugin by its current compatibility and activity rather than assuming that an editor update automatically brings equivalent AI support.

What to remember

  • GIMP’s core is an extensible raster editor; its documented AI operations come from separately installed plugins.
  • Those plugins can remove backgrounds, upscale layers, perform prompt-based edits and call a Stable Diffusion server for text-to-image, image-to-image and reference editing.
  • Krita’s native strengths are digital painting and illustration; generative work is added through projects such as Krita AI Diffusion.
  • Open-source AI editing gives you more control over local files and layers, but you assume responsibility for models, dependencies, hardware, updates and licenses.
