Choose Bitwarden Cloud if you want Bitwarden to run the infrastructure, apply platform updates, and provide the official service boundary. Choose Vaultwarden if you want an independent, open-source, Bitwarden-compatible server and are prepared to operate the server yourself or trust a hosting provider to do it. A managed Vaultwarden service reduces administration, but its uptime, backup, and recovery promises belong to that provider—not to every Vaultwarden installation.

Both options can be used from Bitwarden’s official apps when compatibility is maintained. The decisive difference is where operational responsibility and trust sit: with Bitwarden’s Azure-hosted service, or with you and the infrastructure that runs Vaultwarden.

What Vaultwarden and Bitwarden Cloud actually are

Vaultwarden is an independent compatible server

Vaultwarden is an independent, open-source server that implements the Bitwarden-compatible protocol. It is not Bitwarden’s official server product. The project describes itself as independent from Bitwarden while remaining compatible with the Bitwarden protocol, which allows use of the official Bitwarden applications.

You can deploy Vaultwarden on infrastructure you control, such as a home server, virtual machine, or rented server, or use a third party that operates a hosted instance. In a private deployment, you are responsible for making the service reachable, protecting it, updating it, monitoring it, and restoring it when something fails.

Bitwarden Cloud is Bitwarden’s multi-tenant SaaS

Bitwarden Cloud is the vendor-operated service. You create an account and use the web vault, browser extensions, desktop applications, and mobile applications without installing a password-server stack. Bitwarden describes Cloud as an easy-to-use, simple-to-maintain platform; the service provider operates the underlying infrastructure, applies platform changes, and manages availability.

Cloud does not remove every security decision. You still need a strong master password, protected email and recovery accounts, multifactor authentication where appropriate, and secure devices. It does, however, remove the need for you to maintain a server, reverse proxy, database, certificates, monitoring, and backup jobs.

Features and app compatibility

Using the official Bitwarden apps with Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is designed so that the normal Bitwarden clients can connect to it. In a Bitwarden application, choose the self-hosted server option and enter the URL of your Vaultwarden server. The same account can then be used through the compatible web, desktop, browser, and mobile clients.

  1. Install or obtain a Vaultwarden instance with a stable HTTPS address.
  2. Open the Bitwarden app’s server or environment settings.
  3. Select Self-hosted.
  4. Enter the complete Vaultwarden server URL, including the correct protocol and hostname.
  5. Save the setting, then sign in and verify that vault access and synchronization work on each device.

Bitwarden states that most client functionality is expected to work with non-official servers such as Vaultwarden, but it cannot guarantee that official clients will work perfectly with them. This is a practical compatibility relationship, not the same support promise as using Bitwarden Cloud.

Why feature parity cannot be assumed

Bitwarden Cloud and Bitwarden’s official self-hosted products are the reference implementations for new Bitwarden features. Vaultwarden may implement many compatible capabilities, but there is no complete, version-specific parity matrix established here. A feature that appears in a new Bitwarden client or service can require a Vaultwarden update before it works, may behave differently, or may not be implemented at all.

Before depending on a newer capability, check the Vaultwarden release information and test it with a non-critical account. This matters especially for organizations using shared collections, administrative controls, event information, or other features that evolve alongside the official service.

What happens when a client or server changes

With Cloud, Bitwarden controls the service and its clients as one supported ecosystem. With Vaultwarden, the client and server are maintained by separate projects. An app update can expose an incompatibility before the Vaultwarden server is updated, while a Vaultwarden update can require corresponding client versions. Keep a recovery path available, such as a second signed-in device, before changing either side.

Security: encryption is only one part of the decision

Client-side vault encryption

Vaultwarden states that it encrypts your vault on your device before the data reaches the server. In practical terms, the server is intended to receive encrypted vault data rather than readable passwords. Vaultwarden also says it cannot read vault contents or recover a forgotten master password.

That protection does not make the surrounding system irrelevant. A compromised device can expose secrets before encryption or after decryption. A stolen session, weak email account, exposed recovery channel, malicious browser extension, or administrator-controlled server can still threaten the account. Keep operating systems and clients patched, use multifactor authentication where available, and protect the devices that unlock the vault.

Bitwarden Cloud’s trust boundary

Bitwarden’s compliance information says vault data is processed and stored in Microsoft Azure in the United States or European Union. Bitwarden operates the service and relies on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure for uptime, scalability, and security updates. Choosing Cloud therefore means trusting Bitwarden’s service operations, account controls, and stated Azure regions.

Vaultwarden self-hosting’s trust boundary

Self-hosting moves more control—and more exposure—to you. You must secure the server account, operating system, container or runtime, reverse proxy, TLS certificates, DNS, email delivery, firewall, administrative interfaces, and backup storage. You also decide who can access the host and which country or provider stores the data.

Client-side encryption limits ordinary server reads of vault contents, but it does not protect an attacker who takes over the server account, changes the software, intercepts an administrative session, deletes the database, or compromises backup copies. A self-hosted design should therefore include least-privilege administration, restricted management access, timely security updates, encrypted backups, and tested restoration.

Security of a managed Vaultwarden instance

A managed host can operate the server, apply updates, and provide support, but it becomes another party in the trust chain. Review that provider’s security practices, region, incident process, account recovery policy, backup retention, and ability to export your data. Do not automatically transfer the guarantees advertised by one hosted service to every provider running Vaultwarden.

Maintenance, backups, and availability

What Bitwarden Cloud removes

Cloud users do not install the password server or maintain its database. Bitwarden handles the platform layer, including service operations and infrastructure security updates. You still maintain your own devices and account security, but you are not scheduling server updates, monitoring disk capacity, renewing certificates, or writing restore procedures.

What a private Vaultwarden deployment requires

Bitwarden’s self-hosting documentation characterizes self-hosting as requiring infrastructure and administrator knowledge; its Linux deployment is intended for people with intermediate to advanced command-line and server-management skills. In practice, an operator should plan for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Initial server provisioning, DNS, HTTPS, and secure exposure to the internet or a private network.
  • Regular Vaultwarden, operating-system, runtime, and reverse-proxy updates.
  • Monitoring for failed services, certificate expiry, disk exhaustion, database errors, and suspicious logins.
  • Backups that are encrypted, stored separately from the primary server, and periodically restored in a test environment.
  • A documented recovery process for a failed host, corrupted database, lost credentials, or unavailable domain.
  • Protection of email delivery and other account-recovery paths.

A server that is reachable but not monitored is not a finished deployment. The operator must also decide how quickly to apply emergency security updates and who responds when the service is unavailable.

Hosted Vaultwarden figures are service-specific

Vaultwarden.com advertises a 99.9% uptime target and one off-site backup each hour using a 3-2-1 backup method. The page does not state a year for those figures. They describe that hosted service, not the software running on every private server. A personal installation has no automatic entitlement to the same uptime target or backup schedule unless the operator creates equivalent controls.

Recovery and the forgotten master password

Because the vault is encrypted on the client and the service cannot read it, neither Vaultwarden nor Bitwarden Cloud can simply reveal a forgotten master password. Protect the account email, store recovery information according to your organization’s policy, and ensure that more than one trusted device or administrator can execute the documented recovery plan where appropriate.

Costs and licensing

Bitwarden Cloud pricing shape

Bitwarden’s product page lists Premium at $1.65 per month when billed annually, or $19.80 per year; the page was accessed in 2026. Premium includes an integrated authenticator, file attachments, emergency access, and security reports. Cloud plans can also introduce organization and team features at their own rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vaultwarden software and hosted pricing

Vaultwarden software may be free to download and run, but a real deployment still consumes server capacity, storage, a domain, email delivery, backup storage, and the operator’s time. A hosted Vaultwarden service advertises its instance as free with every feature included for every account. “Free” in that context describes the provider’s account price; it does not guarantee free infrastructure, migration assistance, premium support, or a particular retention policy.

Bitwarden self-hosted licensing

Bitwarden documentation says self-hosting is free, while some individual and organization features require a registered license file. Bitwarden Enterprise includes self-hosting at no additional cost. Check the license requirements for the exact features and number of users you need before treating a self-hosted deployment as equivalent to a paid Cloud plan.

Option Documented cost or allowance Costs you still need to plan for
Bitwarden Premium Cloud $1.65 per month billed annually ($19.80 per year), page accessed 2026 Your devices, connectivity, and account-security measures
Vaultwarden hosted service Advertised as free, with every feature included for every account Provider terms, migration or support charges if offered, and any separate services you choose
Private Vaultwarden Free software Server, domain, email, backups, monitoring, security work, and operator time
Bitwarden self-hosted Free self-hosting; some features require a registered license; Enterprise includes self-hosting at no additional cost Infrastructure operation and any applicable license

Which choice fits your operating model?

Choose Bitwarden Cloud when convenience is the priority

  • You do not want to maintain a public-facing server.
  • You need the official Bitwarden service and client support boundary.
  • Your family or team cannot provide intermediate-to-advanced server administration.
  • You prefer vendor-managed availability, infrastructure security updates, and platform operations.
  • You want new Bitwarden features through the reference service without waiting for a compatible implementation.

Choose private Vaultwarden when control justifies the work

  • You can harden and monitor a server, maintain backups, and test restores.
  • You need to choose the hosting region or keep infrastructure under your control.
  • You are comfortable with compatibility risk when official clients connect to a non-official server.
  • You value an independent, open-source implementation and can respond to updates or incidents.
  • Your homelab or organization already has reliable hosting, DNS, email, and backup processes.

Choose managed Vaultwarden only after checking the provider’s guarantees

Managed hosting is a middle path: you retain the Vaultwarden protocol-compatible experience while another company operates the server. Evaluate the contract rather than assuming that the software’s characteristics equal the host’s service level. Confirm uptime objectives, backup frequency and location, restore testing, update timing, data export, support hours, incident notification, and account-deletion procedures.

Practical checklists before you migrate

Checklist for Bitwarden Cloud

  1. Confirm the Cloud region and organizational requirements for your users.
  2. Set a strong, unique master password and secure the email account attached to it.
  3. Enable available multifactor authentication and keep recovery methods accessible.
  4. Install the official clients on trusted devices and verify vault access before removing an old password manager.
  5. Review emergency-access and organization policies if other people depend on the vault.

Checklist for a private Vaultwarden server

  1. Choose a host and region you can administer, and document who has privileged access.
  2. Set up DNS, HTTPS, firewall rules, and a reverse proxy before inviting users.
  3. Apply operating-system and Vaultwarden updates on a defined schedule, with an emergency process for security fixes.
  4. Automate encrypted database and configuration backups, keep off-site copies, and periodically perform a restore drill.
  5. Monitor service health, disk space, certificate expiry, authentication events, and backup success.
  6. Test the official Bitwarden clients on every platform your users need, then retain a second recovery device.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

The app connects to the wrong server

Each Bitwarden client stores its server environment. If a device was previously configured for Cloud, switch it explicitly to Self-hosted and enter the exact Vaultwarden URL. Verify the hostname and HTTPS certificate before attempting to sign in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A client update changes behavior

Official clients can evolve ahead of a compatible Vaultwarden release. Keep at least one known-good client available, monitor Vaultwarden release information, and test updates with a non-critical account before deploying them to every device.

The server is online but the vault is unavailable

Check the reverse proxy, certificate, DNS, application process, database, disk capacity, and firewall in that order. If the host is damaged, follow the documented restore procedure rather than creating a new empty database that could confuse users.

A backup exists but cannot be restored

A copied file is not proof of recoverability. Perform scheduled test restores on separate infrastructure, record the software versions used, and protect the encryption keys or credentials required to read the backup.

Bottom line: compare responsibility, not just features

Bitwarden Cloud is the lower-maintenance choice: Bitwarden operates the platform, stores service data in its stated Azure regions, and provides the official service boundary. Vaultwarden offers an independent, compatible server and greater control over infrastructure and location, but it transfers updates, hardening, monitoring, backups, and recovery to you or your chosen host. Client-side encryption is important in both models, yet it does not eliminate server and account security work. Pick the option whose maintenance capacity and recovery obligations you can meet consistently.
