Anouk Wipprecht is known for FashionTech: clothing designed to sense the wearer or surrounding people and respond through movement, light, or other effects. Her Spider Dress makes the idea tangible: sensors help its articulated arms react to an approaching person, turning a garment into an interactive boundary around the body.
What is FashionTech?
Wipprecht, a Dutch designer, engineer, educator, and public speaker, defines FashionTech as “the combination of Fashion, Technology and Interaction Design.” Her work treats clothing not just as something to wear, but as an interface connecting a person, a garment, and the surrounding environment. TED describes her approach as combining “fashion, robotics and technology” in what she calls “technological couture.”
That interface can use microcontrollers, sensors, wearable electronics, robotics, mechanical parts, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and 3D printing. As Wipprecht has put it, “What does fashion lack? ‘Microcontrollers’” Her point is that computation can be part of a garment’s design rather than something separate from it.
How does the Spider Dress work?
The Spider Dress is Wipprecht’s best-known example of clothing designed to communicate through motion. Sensors feed information about nearby movement and the wearer’s respiration to a system that controls articulated, animatronic arms. The arms can move into a defensive posture when someone approaches quickly or aggressively, or make a beckoning movement in response to a calmer approach.

The design draws on the way animals use posture and movement to signal boundaries. Wipprecht told Adafruit, “I was keen on re-creating communicative aspects of animal behavior.” In her words, the dress “almost dances with you.” The effect is not simply decoration: the garment’s movement makes an interaction legible to people nearby.
An Intel version used an Intel Edison microcomputer alongside proximity and stress-related sensing. These details describe a particular version, not a universal specification for every Spider Dress or every design in Wipprecht’s portfolio.

How do Wipprecht’s garments sense and respond?
A useful way to understand a responsive garment is to follow its input-to-output loop: a sensor detects a signal, electronics and software interpret it, and an actuator or other component produces a response. The response might be visible movement, light, smoke, a change in opacity, or a dispensing mechanism. Wipprecht’s work is often framed as “clothing as emotional interface,” but that phrase describes the design ambition; it does not mean every garment reads every emotion.
- Inputs: Depending on the project, documented inputs include proximity, motion, respiration, stress-related biosignals, and brain activity.
- Interpretation: Microcontrollers and software connect sensor readings to programmed behavior. The exact sensing and control setup varies by design.
- Outputs: Garments can use articulated mechanical forms, lights, smoke effects, opacity changes, displays, or dispensing systems to make a response perceptible.
- Construction: Fabric or molded structures can be combined with electronics, mechanical components, and 3D-printed parts.
Some projects make internal or cognitive activity visible through a dress response, while others focus on a wearer’s surroundings. These are artistic and interactive designs; the described biosignal and brain-computer-interface experiments are not evidence of medical diagnosis or clinical measurement.

What makes the designs different?
Wipprecht’s projects share the idea of a responsive system around the body, but their inputs, outputs, construction, and social purpose can differ. The following comparison describes documented design approaches rather than assigning every feature to a single named garment.
| Design approach | Input | Response | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal-space boundary | Proximity, motion, and, in the Spider Dress descriptions, respiration | Mechanically articulated arms | Make an approach and a boundary visible through posture and movement |
| Emotional-state visualization | Signals associated with the wearer’s state | Light, opacity, or other visible changes | Express an internal state through the garment |
| Smoke-screen effect | A project-specific trigger; the precise input is not stated in the available project description | Smoke effect | Create a dramatic or protective-looking visual response |
| Brain-computer-interface experiment | Cognitive activity | A visible dress response | Make otherwise hidden data perceptible |
| Dispensing mechanism | A project-specific trigger; the precise input is not stated in the available project description | A drink-serving or other dispensing action | Turn a garment into an interactive mechanism |
The table’s broad categories reflect the range of effects documented in Wipprecht’s work; the available descriptions do not establish one shared sensor, control system, or material recipe for all of them.

What can makers learn from her process?
Wipprecht’s work shows how a wearable concept can combine textile or molded forms with sensors, electronics, software, mechanics, and printed parts. A useful starting point for a related prototype is to define the interaction first: what should the garment sense, what response should follow, and what should that response communicate to another person?
- Choose one input. Pick a signal such as distance or motion rather than trying to sense everything at once.
- Define a legible response. Decide whether a movement, light, or other output communicates the intended message clearly.
- Plan the physical build. Consider how textile, molded, or 3D-printed structures will accommodate the electronics and moving parts.
- Test the interaction as a whole. A sensor reading matters only if the system can turn it into a response that works in context.
Dremel’s maker profile identifies the Dremel 3000 as Wipprecht’s favorite tool for 3D-print work. That is a detail about her fabrication practice, not a requirement for FashionTech: the broader method is combining physical garment construction with electronics and software.
