For most people building a local-AI machine, a used NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 with 24GB of VRAM is the strongest all-round upgrade. Its memory capacity is large enough for substantially bigger quantized models than 12GB cards, while used-market guidance places it below an RTX 4090. Pick a used RTX 3060 12GB when purchase price matters most, an RTX 4090 when response speed and concurrency matter more than cost, or a Radeon RX 7900 XTX when you are willing to validate AMD ROCm on your exact operating system and application stack.

The right purchase depends less on a single benchmark than on VRAM, backend support, cooling, power delivery, physical condition, and the return policy. The comparison below separates model capacity from inference speed so you can buy for the workloads you actually intend to run.

At-a-glance comparison

These are used-market buying tiers, not laboratory performance rankings. No single tokens-per-second number applies across different models, quantization levels, context lengths, drivers, and inference engines, so the table emphasizes capacity and compatibility instead.

Why VRAM is the first local-AI decision

Local inference must keep model data in fast memory. The weights consume the largest fixed allocation, while the context window, key-value cache, runtime buffers, and any second request consume additional space. A card can therefore support a model at one context length but fail when you increase the conversation history or run another session.

What 12GB can and cannot do

A 12GB card is a practical entry point for smaller quantized models, coding assistants, and experimentation. It leaves less headroom for long prompts, larger parameter counts, higher-precision weights, or image-generation workflows that share memory with the language model. When memory is exhausted, software may offload layers to system RAM or the CPU, which usually increases latency sharply, or it may refuse to load the model.

Why 24GB is a meaningful tier

Twenty-four gigabytes gives a model more room for weights and runtime overhead before offloading begins. It is not a guarantee that every large model will fit: quantization, context length, and the inference engine still matter. It does, however, create a substantially wider range of usable local models than 12GB. For many buyers, that extra capacity is more valuable than a modest increase in raw compute.

Capacity versus speed

The RTX 3090 and RTX 4090 both provide 24GB, so they occupy a similar ceiling for model size when all other settings are equal. The 4090’s newer architecture and larger CUDA-core count target faster generation and lower latency, not a larger nominal model. If your priority is fitting a model at all, moving from 12GB to 24GB is usually a more consequential change than moving between two 24GB cards.

Used GeForce RTX 3090 24GB: the value choice

NVIDIA specifies the RTX 3090 as an Ampere GPU with 10,496 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X memory on a 384-bit interface, and third-generation Tensor Cores. That combination makes its 24GB pool the central reason to buy it for local AI. It is also listed among the GeForce GPUs supported by Ollama.

Where it fits

  • Running larger quantized language models than a 12GB card can comfortably accommodate.
  • Keeping more context or runtime headroom before CPU offload.
  • Serving a single user who values capacity per dollar over minimum response latency.
  • Building a CUDA-based workstation where broad application compatibility is a priority.

What the specification does not tell you

Two used 3090s with identical model numbers can behave very differently after years of heat cycles. GDDR6X memory temperatures, fan bearings, thermal pads, and the power connector deserve as much attention as the advertised VRAM. A card that passes a short desktop test can still throttle or produce errors during a sustained inference workload.

Price and value

Current used-market guidance places RTX 3090 listings roughly between $700 and $1,000, with another guide describing approximately $750–$850 as fair. These are indicative ranges rather than guaranteed transaction prices; region, cooler design, accessories, warranty, shipping, and seller reputation can move the final cost substantially. Compare the complete delivered price and return terms, not just the listing headline.

NVLink qualification

NVIDIA lists NVLink support for the RTX 3090. That does not mean every local-AI application can pool two cards or shard a model efficiently. Check the documentation for the exact inference engine before paying for an NVLink-capable setup, and budget for the additional power, heat, and software complexity of a second GPU.

Used GeForce RTX 4090 24GB: the speed tier

NVIDIA specifies the RTX 4090 with 16,384 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X memory, and the Ada Lovelace architecture. It retains the same nominal VRAM capacity as the 3090 while offering a newer compute platform, making it the choice for buyers who care about generation speed, interactive latency, or heavier concurrent workloads.

When its premium makes sense

  • You regularly wait on generation and want lower latency rather than a larger model ceiling.
  • Several users or processes need GPU time at once.
  • Your workload benefits from the 4090’s newer architecture and your power, cooling, and case are already prepared for a high-end card.
  • The price difference over a clean 3090 is small enough that a warranty or better condition changes the calculation.

When it does not solve the problem

If a model fails because it needs more than 24GB, a 4090 will not fix the capacity limit. It also does not remove the need to validate the model’s quantization, context length, and backend. There is no dependable universal speed figure to quote: results vary with model family, prompt size, batching, driver, and inference software.

Used GeForce RTX 3060 12GB: the budget entry point

The 12GB RTX 3060 is supported by Ollama and occupies a much lower used-price bracket. Current guidance describes about $170–$220 as a fair range, although the exact amount depends on condition and local supply.

Good reasons to choose it

  • You are learning local inference and want to minimize the initial hardware cost.
  • Your target models are small, quantized, and used with moderate context lengths.
  • You need a card that is easier to cool and power than the larger 24GB options.
  • You accept that a future model upgrade may require replacing the card rather than adding software tweaks.

Plan around the memory ceiling

Leave room for the runtime, context cache, and operating-system overhead instead of treating all 12GB as available for weights. A model that barely loads may become unusable when you increase context or open a second session. If your stated goal is to run larger quantized models without frequent compromises, the 3060 is an economy choice, not a capacity-equivalent alternative to a 3090.

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB: the AMD alternative

AMD’s ROCm specification identifies the Radeon RX 7900 XTX as an RDNA3 GPU with 24GB of memory and 96 compute units. Ollama lists the 7900 XTX among supported Radeon GPUs, but both Ollama and AMD make clear that ROCm does not support every AMD GPU or every platform combination.

Who should consider it

It is most suitable for a Linux user who is comfortable checking ROCm documentation, installing the matching runtime, and troubleshooting an application-specific backend. The 24GB capacity can place it in the same model-size conversation as the 3090 and 4090, but capacity alone does not guarantee that a particular framework will use the card correctly.

Verify the exact software matrix

AMD’s compatibility matrix ties support to the GPU, operating system, and ROCm version. Before buying, write down the operating-system release and the ROCm version required by your intended inference application, then confirm that the RX 7900 XTX appears in that combination. Also check whether the application uses ROCm directly, a supported abstraction layer, or only CUDA. A listing that says “24GB” is not a substitute for this compatibility check.

Why the setup can be worth the effort

If your platform is explicitly supported and you are comfortable maintaining it, the 7900 XTX offers a large memory pool without depending on NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem. If you need plug-and-play compatibility across many local-AI tools, the additional validation burden may outweigh a small purchase-price difference.

Modified RTX 2080 Ti cards: an enthusiast gamble

Reports describe pre-modded RTX 2080 Ti cards with 22GB of memory. Treat these as experimental hardware rather than a default recommendation. The modification itself, firmware, memory layout, cooler, and seller quality all become part of the risk profile.

Questions to ask before considering one

  • Who performed the memory modification, and is there a documented warranty?
  • Does the card report the advertised capacity correctly in a live diagnostic tool?
  • Which driver versions recognize it without manual firmware changes?
  • Has the seller demonstrated sustained load testing without artifacts or memory errors?
  • Does your inference software support the card’s available reduced-precision formats?

A modified card can be interesting for an enthusiast who enjoys troubleshooting, but a clean, conventionally supported 24GB card is normally the safer route for a working local-AI system.

Match the GPU to your workload

Single-user chat and coding

For one person running a quantized language model, VRAM headroom determines which models and context lengths are practical. A 12GB card can be a sensible starting point for smaller models. A 24GB card gives you more freedom to test larger models and preserve longer conversation history without immediately moving layers to the CPU.

Long-context work

Longer prompts increase cache and runtime memory even when the model weights do not change. If you expect document analysis, large code repositories, or extended conversations, reserve more headroom than a model’s advertised weight size suggests. This is where a nominally adequate 12GB card can become frustrating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple concurrent requests

Concurrency multiplies temporary memory and compute demand. A 4090 is attractive when latency under simultaneous requests matters, while a 3090’s 24GB capacity can still be the better fit if the primary constraint is model size. Two-card configurations add complexity and should be evaluated against the application’s actual sharding and batching support.

Image or multimodal workflows

Applications that combine a language model with image generation, vision encoders, or other models may reserve memory for more than one component. Check the application’s documented requirements and leave additional headroom; do not assume that a model fitting alone leaves enough memory for the full pipeline.

Software and backend compatibility

NVIDIA and CUDA

NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem is generally the lower-friction path for mixed local-AI software. The 3090, 4090, and 3060 are all GeForce options listed by Ollama, but support still depends on the current application release and driver. Install the driver version required by your chosen stack, then verify that the operating system exposes the card before troubleshooting the model itself.

AMD and ROCm

ROCm is not a universal “AMD driver.” Its support is conditional on the exact GPU, operating system, and ROCm release. Confirm those three variables in AMD’s compatibility matrix and in the application’s own hardware list. A card can be fully functional for gaming yet unavailable to a particular inference backend.

Use the application’s current documentation

Hardware lists change as projects add or drop backends. Check the current Ollama GPU documentation for GeForce and Radeon support, then check any separate framework or model-runner requirements. Do this before purchasing rather than after installing a card that your preferred tool cannot use.

Used-GPU inspection checklist

  1. Confirm the exact model and memory. Ask for a live screenshot or video from GPU-Z, nvidia-smi, or an equivalent diagnostic. The reported VRAM should match the listing and the manufacturer’s specification.
  2. Request sustained testing. A return window or documented load test is more valuable than a brief claim that the card “boots.” Look for stable temperatures, consistent fan operation, no visual artifacts, and no reported memory errors during an extended run.
  3. Inspect the cooler. Check fans for bearing noise or wobble, heatsink fins for damage, and evidence that the card has been opened. Replaced thermal pads are not automatically bad, but poor installation can cause memory overheating.
  4. Examine power connectors. Look for discoloration, melted plastic, loose pins, or damaged cables. Confirm that your power supply has the required connectors and sufficient capacity for the specific card.
  5. Check case clearance and airflow. Measure card length, thickness, and radiator or drive-bay conflicts. A high-power 3090 or 4090 can need substantially better airflow than a 3060.
  6. Ask about workload history. Mining is not proof of failure, but long periods of continuous heat can affect fans, memory pads, and connectors. Treat missing history as uncertainty and price the risk accordingly.
  7. Verify firmware and driver behavior. The card should be recognized by a current, supported driver without unexplained manual modifications. Be especially cautious with modified 2080 Ti cards.
  8. Calculate delivered cost. Include shipping, taxes, an adapter or replacement cable, replacement fans or pads, and the value of any remaining warranty. A slightly more expensive card with a real return period can be the cheaper outcome.

Power, cooling, and physical planning

VRAM capacity does not make a card easy to install. The RTX 3090 is a high-power design and may require stronger case airflow and power delivery than an RTX 3060. The RTX 4090 is also a high-end, physically demanding card. Confirm the power-supply rating recommended for the exact board partner model, cable condition, and connector arrangement rather than relying on the GPU name alone.

Plan airflow before the card arrives. Provide an unobstructed intake, a clear exhaust path, and enough room for the fans to breathe. If temperatures climb until clocks fall, the card may appear slower than expected even though the hardware is healthy. Fan noise is also part of the user experience for an always-on local server.

How to compare price and value

Use the 24GB RTX 3090 guidance of roughly $700–$1,000 listings, with $750–$850 described as fair, as a negotiation reference rather than a promise. Use the RTX 3060 guidance of about $170–$220 as the budget benchmark. Dependable used-price ranges for the RTX 4090, RX 7900 XTX, and modified 2080 Ti are not established here, so current local listings and warranty terms must determine whether they are sensible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare each candidate on four totals:

  • Acquisition: purchase price, shipping, taxes, and required cables.
  • Preparation: replacement fans, thermal-pad work, cleaning, or a power-supply upgrade.
  • Operating cost: electricity and the cooling needed for long inference sessions.
  • Risk cost: return shipping, lack of warranty, and the time required to solve backend or hardware problems.

A cheaper card that cannot run your chosen backend, overheats under sustained load, or has no return window is not cheaper in practice.

Common problems and fixes

The application sees no GPU

First confirm that the operating system sees the card with the vendor’s diagnostic tool. Reseat the card and power cables, check the driver installation, and verify that the application supports the GPU and backend combination. For AMD, recheck the exact ROCm, operating-system, and application versions instead of assuming a generic Radeon driver is sufficient.

The model runs out of memory

Reduce context length, choose a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, close other GPU applications, or move to a card with more VRAM. Lowering a single setting may help, but a 12GB card cannot be configured into a 24GB card.

Inference is unexpectedly slow

Check whether the runtime has silently offloaded layers to system RAM or the CPU. Confirm that the intended precision and GPU backend are active, then watch temperatures and clocks during a sustained request. A universal speed claim is not meaningful without the model, prompt, context, driver, and engine being specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD installation fails after an update

ROCm support can change with operating-system and runtime versions. Return to the documented compatibility matrix, use the versions explicitly supported by your application, and avoid upgrading one component in isolation when the stack requires a matched set.

A used card shows artifacts or memory errors

Stop the test and use the return policy. Do not treat lower clocks or a custom fan curve as a repair for defective memory. Photograph the symptoms, retain diagnostic output, and report the failure to the seller within the stated window.

A practical decision path

Your priority Most suitable tier Reason
Largest practical model capacity per dollar Used RTX 3090 24GB 24GB memory with broad CUDA-oriented software support
Lowest purchase price and smaller models Used RTX 3060 12GB Much lower fair used-price guidance and straightforward GeForce support
Lowest latency or more simultaneous work Used RTX 4090 24GB Newer Ada architecture and 16,384 CUDA cores without sacrificing the 24GB tier
AMD/Linux stack and willingness to validate ROCm Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB Large memory pool with documented ROCm path when the exact platform is supported
Hardware experimentation Modified RTX 2080 Ti Reported 22GB capacity, balanced against unusually high verification and firmware risk

Buy the 3090 when capacity and software breadth are the center of the decision, the 3060 when budget is the hard limit, the 4090 when time-to-response is worth paying for, and the 7900 XTX only after its ROCm combination is confirmed. Whichever card you choose, a verified diagnostic, adequate cooling, and a real return window matter more than a headline specification.
