Use a sequence instead of a random course list: begin with AI literacy, learn machine-learning fundamentals, practise prompt engineering, build a few projects with modern language-model tools, and only then study production systems. A practical free path is Elements of AI (or a beginner introduction from Google or Microsoft), followed by Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course and Kaggle Learn, then DeepLearning.AI’s AI Prompting for Everyone and ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers. Hugging Face, Microsoft’s Generative AI for Beginners, fast.ai and production-focused material are sensible next steps.

This guide explains what each resource is best for, what preparation it assumes, how much coding and practice it involves, what “free” does and does not include, and how to turn the courses into a coherent study plan.

Choose a learning path before choosing a course

AI, machine learning and prompt engineering overlap, but they are not the same subject. AI literacy explains what systems can and cannot do. Machine learning teaches how data, models, training and evaluation fit together. Prompt engineering focuses on getting reliable behaviour from an existing language model. Modern LLM courses add transformers, open-source models and application patterns. Production courses address deployment, monitoring and maintenance.

A staged path prevents two common failures: trying to learn advanced frameworks without understanding model behaviour, or collecting introductory videos without ever practising. Use the following order unless you have a specific professional reason to enter later:

  1. Overview: learn the vocabulary, capabilities and limitations of AI.
  2. Foundations: work through supervised-learning concepts, metrics and notebook exercises.
  3. Prompting: practise clear instructions, examples, constraints and evaluation.
  4. Projects: build with LLMs, transformers or an applied machine-learning workflow.
  5. Production: study deployment, testing, monitoring and framework-specific tooling.

Keep a single learning log. For every lesson, record the concept, one experiment, the result and one question. That habit is more valuable than finishing a larger number of unrelated courses.

Best free AI courses for complete beginners

Elements of AI: a low-barrier overview

Elements of AI is a strong starting point when you want conceptual grounding before writing code. It introduces the ideas behind artificial intelligence in accessible language, making it suitable for learners who are unsure whether they need mathematics or programming. Use it to understand terms such as data, learning, reasoning and the limits of automated systems.

  • Best for: absolute beginners, managers, students and non-technical professionals.
  • Prerequisites: none stated.
  • Coding intensity: none to low; treat it as a conceptual primer.
  • Format: guided online lessons and exercises.
  • Hands-on work: conceptual activities rather than a full software project.
  • Assessment and certificate: check the current provider terms; free learning access does not automatically mean a free certificate.

After finishing, you should be able to explain the difference between a rule-based program and a model trained from examples. If you cannot describe that distinction in your own words, postpone advanced courses and revisit the introductory material.

Beginner introductions from Google or Microsoft

Google and Microsoft both publish introductory AI material aimed at people who need a practical orientation rather than a deep mathematical treatment. These introductions are useful alternatives to Elements of AI or a short bridge into the next stage. Select one rather than taking several near-identical overviews.

Pay attention to whether a lesson demonstrates a vendor-specific service or teaches a general idea. Vendor examples can make a concept concrete, but write down the underlying principle separately so that you can transfer it to another tool.

Machine-learning foundations: the best free places to practise

Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course

Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course is the most direct transition from general AI literacy to machine-learning practice in this list. It covers core machine-learning basics and includes guidance related to prompting on Google’s learning resources. Work through the explanations in order, then stop after each concept to predict what an experiment should show before running it.

  • Best for: learners ready to move from definitions to model-building concepts.
  • Prerequisites: basic algebra, comfort with graphs and willingness to read technical explanations; the provider’s current requirements should be checked before starting.
  • Coding intensity: moderate. Expect to inspect data, follow notebook-style examples and interpret results.
  • Format: lessons, visual explanations and interactive exercises.
  • Hands-on work: yes; use the exercises to connect a metric to a model’s behaviour.
  • Assessment and certificate: current certificate conditions are not guaranteed by free course access; verify them on the course page.

Do not rush past evaluation. A model that appears accurate can still fail on a minority class or on data that differs from its training examples. For every exercise, write down the target variable, the metric, the baseline and one plausible source of leakage.

Kaggle Learn: short, notebook-based practice

Kaggle Learn is useful when you learn by doing. Its lessons emphasise exercises and notebook practice, so you can edit code, run it and inspect the output rather than merely watching a lecture. Use it alongside the Crash Course: learn a concept in one place and reinforce it with a small notebook in the other.

  • Best for: beginners who want frequent coding repetitions and concrete datasets.
  • Prerequisites: basic Python helps, although the introductory lessons are designed to teach progressively.
  • Coding intensity: moderate, with short, focused notebook tasks.
  • Format: concise lessons and browser-based notebooks.
  • Hands-on work: central to the experience.
  • Assessment and certificate: completion and certificate policies can change; check the current course interface.

Keep your own copy of each notebook with comments explaining why a step exists. A copied cell is not evidence that you understand the transformation, split or metric it performs.

Prompt engineering courses: from everyday use to applications

DeepLearning.AI’s AI Prompting for Everyone

AI Prompting for Everyone is the general-purpose prompt-engineering choice in this path. It is suited to people who use conversational AI for writing, analysis, planning or research and want a repeatable method instead of trial and error.

Practise by giving the model a clear task, relevant context, constraints and a desired output format. Then create two deliberately difficult examples: one with ambiguous instructions and one containing conflicting requirements. Compare the outputs and revise only one prompt element at a time. This turns prompting into an observable experiment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: non-developers and professionals who need reliable day-to-day results.
  • Prerequisites: none beyond access to a language-model interface.
  • Coding intensity: low.
  • Format: short, practical lessons and demonstrations.
  • Hands-on work: prompt-writing exercises; create your own evaluation examples.
  • Assessment and certificate: verify current access and certificate terms.

ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers

When you are building an application, use ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers after the general course. It is taught by Isa Fulford of OpenAI and Andrew Ng and focuses on prompt best practices and language-model API applications. The developer orientation means that you should be comfortable reading code and thinking about inputs, outputs and failure handling.

  • Best for: software developers and technical product builders.
  • Prerequisites: basic programming and familiarity with APIs are advisable.
  • Coding intensity: moderate; examples connect prompts to application logic.
  • Format: practical instructional videos and code-oriented examples.
  • Hands-on work: yes; adapt examples to a small application rather than leaving them unchanged.
  • Assessment and certificate: access and certificate policies are subject to the provider’s current terms.

For every application prompt, define an acceptance test before improving the wording. Examples include valid JSON structure, refusal of an out-of-scope request, preservation of a required field or a citation to supplied context. Without tests, prompt “improvements” are subjective.

Modern LLM and open-source practice

Hugging Face courses

Hugging Face courses are a natural next step when you understand basic machine learning and want to work with transformers, language models or open-source tooling. They are more technical than a general prompt course. Start with the introductory material that matches your Python level, then reproduce a small example before attempting a larger model.

Expect to learn concepts that do not appear in a simple chatbot demo: tokenisation, model inputs, fine-tuning or adaptation, evaluation and the trade-offs between model size and available compute. Treat every notebook as a starting point. Change one variable, record the result and explain why it changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Generative AI for Beginners

Microsoft’s Generative AI for Beginners provides a structured route into generative-AI concepts and application patterns. It can serve as a bridge between prompt practice and larger LLM projects. Because examples may use a particular ecosystem, label each step as either a general pattern or a platform-specific implementation.

fast.ai and project-led study

fast.ai is appropriate for learners who prefer to build useful models early and fill in theory as questions arise. Project-led learning can be motivating, but it works best when you pause to study the underlying data preparation, validation and error analysis. A model that produces an attractive demo can still be poorly calibrated or unusable outside the examples you selected.

Production depth after you can train and evaluate a model

Production material makes sense after you can train a basic model and explain its evaluation. DeepLearning.AI’s catalogue includes machine-learning-in-production and TensorFlow pathways. Use those courses to study data pipelines, deployment choices, monitoring, retraining and the operational consequences of changing a model or prompt.

Build a small “production checklist” while studying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What data is collected, and is its use permitted?
  • How are training, validation and test data separated?
  • Which metric triggers investigation, and what is an acceptable range?
  • How are model, prompt and data versions recorded?
  • What happens when the model is unavailable, uncertain or wrong?
  • Who reviews incidents and approves a rollback?

Production quality is not the same as a higher benchmark score. Reliability, latency, cost, privacy, observability and a safe fallback can matter more than a small improvement on a held-out dataset.

A practical 12-week study plan

Weeks 1–2: establish vocabulary and a baseline

Complete an introductory course such as Elements of AI or a beginner Google or Microsoft module. Write a one-page glossary in your own words. Include model, feature, label, training, inference, hallucination, evaluation and prompt. Finish with a short explanation of one AI use case that should not be automated and why.

Weeks 3–6: learn machine-learning fundamentals

Use the Machine Learning Crash Course for concepts and Kaggle Learn for notebook repetition. Keep one clean notebook that contains a baseline, a train/validation split, a metric and an error-analysis section. Change one preprocessing or modelling choice at a time; otherwise you will not know what caused an improvement or regression.

Weeks 7–8: practise prompting deliberately

Take AI Prompting for Everyone. Build a prompt test set of at least ten representative tasks, including ambiguous and adversarial examples. Score outputs against criteria such as factuality, format compliance and usefulness. If you are developing software, continue with ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers and turn one prompt into a small API-backed feature.

Weeks 9–10: build with modern LLM tools

Choose Hugging Face, Microsoft’s Generative AI for Beginners or fast.ai according to your goal. Deliver one small project: a document classifier, a retrieval-assisted question-answering prototype, a text summariser with explicit evaluation, or an image model trained on a carefully defined dataset. Document data sources, limitations and failure cases.

Weeks 11–12: add production habits

Select production or TensorFlow material from DeepLearning.AI. Add versioning, logging, a rollback plan and a written statement of what the system must never do. Present your project to another person and ask them to find an example that breaks it. Fix the failure or record why it remains out of scope.

Projects that turn free lessons into evidence of skill

Choose a project with a measurable outcome and a small enough scope to finish. The following designs work without claiming that any particular course supplies them:

Costs, certificates, hardware and prerequisites

What free access usually covers

Free access commonly means that you can read lessons, watch instruction and complete at least some exercises without paying. It does not establish that graded assessments, identity-verified certificates, extended cloud notebooks, private support or a particular software version are free. Check the provider’s current terms before planning around a certificate.

How much mathematics and coding you need

AI literacy and general prompt engineering can be started without coding. Machine-learning foundations become easier with basic Python, algebra, probability vocabulary and the ability to read charts. Transformer and production work benefits from stronger Python, debugging, version control and API skills. Learn prerequisites just in time: study the algebra required to understand a loss function, not an entire mathematics degree before running your first experiment.

Hardware and data

Browser notebooks and hosted exercises can remove the need for a powerful local computer, but availability and usage limits vary. Start with small datasets and compact models. If an exercise exceeds your available memory or takes too long, reduce the dataset, use a smaller model, save intermediate results and document the change. Never imply that a result obtained on a reduced experiment matches a full-scale run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Collecting courses without finishing projects

Set a deliverable before opening the next course. If you cannot show a notebook, prompt test set or documented experiment from the current stage, pause new material and finish a small artefact.

Confusing a fluent answer with a correct one

Use source-backed test cases, explicit rubrics and human review for consequential tasks. Record uncertainty and failure examples instead of judging quality by tone.

Ignoring data leakage

Inspect how every feature is created and when it becomes available in the real workflow. A feature derived from the future can inflate evaluation and collapse after deployment.

Using a vendor tutorial as a general rule

Mark platform-specific commands in your notes. Rewrite the idea in tool-neutral language and implement it once with a different library or interface when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a certificate to prove competence

A certificate can show completion, but a reproducible project demonstrates that you can define a problem, evaluate results and handle failure. Keep both only if each serves a different purpose.

Optional deeper reference after the introductory sequence

Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig is a substantial reference for readers who want a broader and more rigorous treatment after introductory courses. It is not a free course, and editions and regional listings vary, so verify the edition before buying. Use it selectively: consult the chapters that answer questions raised by your projects rather than attempting to read the entire book before practising.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn AI for free without a technical background?

Yes. Start with an AI-literacy course and general prompt practice, then add Python and algebra when you reach machine-learning notebooks. You do not need to master every prerequisite before beginning; you do need to fill gaps when they prevent you from explaining an experiment.

Which resource is the best free prompt-engineering course?

For general use, choose AI Prompting for Everyone. For building an application with a language-model API, choose ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers after you are comfortable with basic programming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are certificates included with these free resources?

Not necessarily. Certificate fees, identity checks and eligibility rules are separate from lesson access and can change. Confirm the current policy on the provider’s enrolment page before treating a certificate as part of your plan.

Should I learn prompting before machine learning?

You can practise useful prompting immediately, but machine-learning foundations make it easier to understand evaluation, data quality and why a model fails. A short prompt course followed by fundamentals is a sensible order for most learners.

Is the Russell and Norvig book required?

No. It is an optional deeper reference for readers who want more breadth and theory after the free introductory sequence. Your first priority should be completing and evaluating a small project.

Frequently Asked Questions
