If Spotify keeps closing on your Android phone, first close and reopen the app, then restart your phone. Next, update Spotify and Android, check your connection, and clear Spotify’s cache. Reinstall only if those steps fail: Spotify says downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again after reinstalling.
Try these fixes in order
Make one change at a time and reopen Spotify to see whether it helped. Google recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step, which makes it easier to identify what changed.

Close Spotify and restart your phone
Open Android’s recent-apps view, swipe Spotify away to close it, and launch it again. If it still crashes, restart the phone and try once more.

Update Spotify and Android
Open Google Play, find Spotify, and install an available update. Then check your phone’s system-update settings; the exact menu name varies by manufacturer and Android version. Spotify and Google both recommend checking for updates.

Check the internet connection
Open another app that uses the internet to confirm the connection works. If possible, try a different network. Spotify recommends checking that the connection is stable; a connection test can help distinguish a playback problem from a crash that happens before Spotify loads.

Clear Spotify’s cache
In Android Settings, go to Apps → Spotify → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache. Menu labels vary. Choose Clear cache, not Clear data: they are different actions, and clearing data is not needed for this cache check.

Close unused apps; test without an SD card if you use one
Close other apps you are not using. If your phone has a removable SD card, temporarily remove it and test Spotify again. Spotify lists both as troubleshooting checks; removing a card is an isolation test, not proof that the card is faulty.

Reinstall Spotify if it still crashes
Uninstall Spotify, then install it again from Google Play. Spotify warns: “You need to re-download any downloaded music and podcasts after reinstalling the app.” Your offline downloads will need to be downloaded again.

Work out whether the crash is limited to Spotify
Note when the crash occurs and what changed beforehand. These clues help you choose where to look next, but none proves a cause on its own.
- Spotify alone crashes: If other apps work normally and Spotify still fails after the steps above, contact Spotify Support. Google recommends contacting an app’s developer when a problem affects one app rather than other apps.
- Several apps crash: Continue troubleshooting Android and the phone itself; contact the phone maker if needed.
- The crash began after an update: Note whether Spotify or Android updated shortly before the problem started. Check for another available update rather than installing an app package from an unofficial download site.
- It happens on one network or during playback: Try another connection if available and compare whether Spotify opens normally before playback begins. This can help narrow down the circumstances to report to support.
- Your phone uses an SD card: Compare Spotify’s behavior with and without the card, if it can be removed safely.
Could Spotify itself be having a problem?
Possibly, but a sudden crash on one phone does not establish a Spotify-wide incident. Spotify Community has an ongoing thread titled “App crashing upon launch on Android,” with reports involving different devices and crash patterns. Those posts show that users have reported the issue; they do not establish one shared cause or a fix that works for everyone.

A September 2026 report discussed a Spotify login issue, but that historical report does not show that Spotify is down now. Check current official Spotify support or status information before treating a service-side problem as the explanation. If Spotify also fails in a browser or on another device, include that detail when seeking help.
