The Roland V-1HD is worth considering if you need a compact, hands-on switcher for up to four HDMI sources in an HD production. Its two HDMI outputs, preview and multiview options, built-in audio mixer, and production effects make it useful for small events, presentations, and similar setups. It is not a 4K switcher, and the V-1HD alone does not provide native USB streaming to a computer: Roland describes adding its UVC-01 capture device for that workflow.

There is no price-based verdict here because a current retail price and comparative value are not established. The decision comes down to whether its HD-only format, HDMI connections, monitoring workflow, and audio facilities suit your setup.

Who should consider the Roland V-1HD?

The clearest fit is a small production that needs to switch among up to four HDMI sources and would benefit from physical controls, a separate preview output, and integrated audio mixing. That could include a presentation or live event using cameras, computers, tablets, or other HDMI devices. This assessment follows Roland’s specifications; it is not based on hands-on testing.

  • Consider it if your sources are HDMI, HD resolution is sufficient, and you want hardware buttons and a T-fader alongside built-in transitions and effects.
  • Look elsewhere or budget for added hardware if your workflow requires SDI, 4K switching, or a direct USB connection to a streaming computer.
  • Check your source requirements before relying on compatibility with protected HDMI content. Roland lists HDCP support, but that does not establish that every protected source will work as intended.

What the V-1HD connects and outputs

Roland specifies four Type A HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, and one HDMI preview output. The second output can be configured for a preview or multiview role, or used for program output, depending on the setup. Roland describes options including a four-way multiview display and an up-next input preview.

How switching, preview, and effects work

The unit is operated with illuminated source controls and a T-fader. Roland lists CUT and MIX transitions, 30 WIPE types, and 11 TRANSFORMER types, along with freeze and output fade. Effects include negative, emboss, colorize, color pass, posterize, silhouette, monochrome, and edge detection. It also supports luminance and chroma keying, picture-in-picture, and split layouts.

Roland’s support materials describe automatic input scanning at intervals from 1 to 120 seconds and BPM-synchronized switching. The support page also describes a Version 2.0 update with a one-third picture-in-picture size, automatic scan, multiview audio meters, panel lock, and a quick reset action.

Audio facilities and connections

Roland specifies 24-bit/48 kHz audio processing and describes the digital audio mixer as 12-channel. Audio sources and connections include embedded audio from HDMI inputs, an RCA line input, and a stereo-mini microphone input with plug-in power support. Outputs include HDMI, RCA audio, and a stereo-mini headphone output.

Roland Professional A/V V-1HD HD Video Switcher
  • 4 HDMI Inputs: The V-1HD has 4 HDMI input connectors compatible with a variety of equipment. The V-1HD supports 1080p/1080i/720p video resolutions. Devices outputting the same resolution can be input regardless of what type of device they are. Both progressive and interlace signals can be input allowing for both 1080i and 1080p signals to be used at the same time.
  • Professional Switching: The V-1HD has large back-lit buttons for intuitive video switching even in low light conditions. The V-1HD even lets you know which inputs have sources connected by illuminating the buttons of the inputs with connected sources. The V-1HD features broadcast style Preview/Program switching for professional results.
  • Effects: Compositing two videos in one screen using Picture in Picture or the split function is ideal for seminars and presentations. The V-1HD also supports chroma key and luminance key which ideal for creating professional looking broadcasts using green screen backgrounds or for overlaying computer generated titles on top of video sources.
  • Audio Mixing: Included is a 12 channel digital audio mixer. The V-1HD can mix 4 stereo audio inputs from the HDMI ports, the stereo line level input and a mic level input. Every channel is equipped with a delay function to synchronize the video and the audio. Audio follow function enables the audio to transition along with the video.
  • Menu and Settings: The on-screen menu display appears on the preview screen and is easy to operate with hardware controls. Making adjustments to parameters and operating the audio mixer can be made by simple operation of the buttons and the T-Fader on the unit.

The listed mixer processing includes EQ, delay, compressor, high-pass filter, gate, reverb, and mastering effects. These are feature specifications, not independent sound-quality tests. Whether the built-in mixer replaces part of an external audio setup depends on the sources, routing, and processing your production needs.

What you need to stream from a computer

The V-1HD is a video switcher, not a native USB streaming interface by itself. Roland’s product resources describe adding the UVC-01 to stream. In practice, check the capture device’s current availability and compatibility, then confirm that your computer and streaming software accept the captured signal. Do not confuse the V-1HD with the separately listed V-1HD+ or models that have native USB streaming output.

Roland V-8HD HD Video Switcher
  • All-HDMI Workflow: Seamless mixing of up to eight HDMI sources in a lightweight and ultra-compact design for streamlined production
  • Five-Layer Effects and Keying Engine: Advanced visual compositions with professional-grade effects and keying capabilities for creative live productions
  • Built-In Multi-Viewer Preview Monitor: Integrated preview monitor with optional external display support for comprehensive source monitoring
  • AUX Output Capability: Send a different video feed to a separate destination for flexible routing and distribution options
  • Automated Video Switching: Sequencing, macros, and preset memories enable efficient and repeatable switching operations for complex productions

For a basic program-and-preview arrangement, connect your HDMI sources to the V-1HD and displays or downstream equipment to its outputs as needed. If a computer must receive the switched program, include the appropriate capture hardware in the signal chain rather than assuming the switcher alone connects over USB.

Software, firmware, and what to verify

Roland’s support page lists System Program Ver. 2.07 and V-1HD RCS Ver. 2.0.1 for Windows and macOS. Software and firmware can change, so check the V-1HD support page for current downloads and operating-system compatibility before updating or building a workflow around the control software.

Roland’s 2026 catalogue describes the product as a “Compact and portable entry model of full HD supported video switcher.” That is Roland’s positioning, not an independent assessment. Roland Pro A/V also describes switching HDMI video sources with a button press or T-fader; that is promotional product language rather than independently verified ease-of-use evidence.

What is in the box and what else might be needed?

Roland lists an owner’s manual, AC adaptor, power cord, and cord hook as package accessories. HDMI cables and a monitor are not listed among these accessories. You may need suitable HDMI cables for your sources and displays; a monitor is useful if your workflow calls for preview or multiview. A computer-streaming setup may also need the UVC-01 capture device identified by Roland. Confirm current availability and compatibility for any additional equipment.

Verdict: is the Roland V-1HD worth it?

It is a plausible choice when the key requirements are four HDMI sources, HD output up to 1080p, tactile operation, preview or multiview monitoring, and onboard audio and effects. Its two outputs and physical controls address needs that a simple one-input capture device does not. But the case weakens if you need 4K, SDI, or direct USB streaming without an added capture device.

No current retailer price, used-market value, or comparison against specific competing switchers is established here, so a value-for-money verdict would be premature. Before buying, compare the complete cost of the switcher and any required capture hardware against alternatives that match your exact inputs, output resolution, monitoring, and audio needs.
