For backup during a power outage, a portable power station is usually the more direct choice. It stores energy and can run selected appliances from its own AC outlets. A typical plug-in, grid-tied solar microinverter shuts down when the grid fails, so it does not provide backup by itself. To combine solar generation with outage power, look at a system with battery storage and a specified off-grid or backup output—and verify that its connection method is permitted where you live.
How the two options behave during an outage
The key difference is storage. Plug-in grid-tied solar sends panel power to household loads while the grid is operating; it is not necessarily able to keep producing usable household power when the grid goes down. A portable power station stores energy in a battery and can deliver it later through its own outlets.
| What matters | Plug-in grid-tied solar | Portable power station | Integrated solar-storage system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Supply current home demand and potentially reduce grid draw | Store energy and power selected appliances | Combine solar input, storage, and backup functions |
| During a grid outage | The reviewed APsystems EZ1 microinverter shuts down under anti-islanding protection. APsystems EZ1 consumer page | Can power appliances through its own outlets. Connecting household circuits requires suitable separate equipment. Anker SOLIX F3800 product page | Depends on the exact system’s off-grid output and backup design |
| How solar is used | Panels feed a grid-connected inverter | Compatible panels can recharge the battery, within the station’s input limits | Solar input charges integrated storage, subject to product specifications |
| What to compare | Output, panel compatibility, export controls, and local interconnection rules | Capacity, continuous and surge output, ports, solar input, and any transfer equipment | Off-grid output, battery capacity, PV input, expansion, installation, and local availability |
When plug-in solar is the better fit
Choose grid-tied plug-in solar for routine solar generation while the grid is available—not as outage backup on its own. A microinverter must respond to grid loss; otherwise it could energize utility lines. APsystems says its EZ1 uses anti-islanding protection and restarts after stable grid power returns. This is a manufacturer statement about that model, not a blanket claim about every plug-in solar product.
Example: APsystems EZ1-LV
APsystems says the EZ1-LV supports two panels and provides up to 900 W AC output. Its product page says excess electricity may flow to the grid depending on utility requirements, and describes an optional APmeter for zero-export control. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance findings. APsystems EZ1 consumer page

Do not count a grid-tied array as a way to charge a battery during an outage unless the equipment documentation explicitly supports that operating arrangement. For example, Anker says a grid-tied solar inverter stops feeding during an outage and that a grid-tied array will not charge the F3800 through its Home Power Panel while the grid is down. Anker SOLIX F3800 product page
When a portable power station is the better fit
A power station is generally the simpler match when the goal is to keep selected devices running during an outage. You plug appliances into the station’s own outlets, subject to its available energy and output limits. That is different from powering home wiring or a circuit breaker panel.

Size for both energy and power
- Energy capacity, measured in Wh or kWh, indicates how much stored energy is available. It does not guarantee a particular runtime; actual duration depends on the devices and their use.
- Continuous output limits the total power the station can supply at once. Surge output matters for appliances that briefly draw more power when starting.
- Ports and voltage determine which devices can connect directly. Check the actual model’s outlet types and ratings against your appliance requirements.
- Recharge capability affects how the station can be replenished during a longer outage. If using panels, confirm their voltage, current, and connector are compatible with the station’s solar input.
- Expansion may increase stored energy on supported systems, but does not automatically increase every output limit or make the system suitable for whole-home backup.
Anker describes the SOLIX F3800 as providing 6,000 W output, 120/240 V output, and expansion up to 53.8 kWh with its system. It also describes solar connections and a separate Home Power Panel for integration and automatic backup. These are product-page claims, not independent tests or a runtime promise. Anker SOLIX F3800 product page
Outlets are not a home-circuit connection
A station’s AC outlets can run connected appliances, but they are not equivalent to connecting the station to household circuits. Anker’s Home Power Panel is an example of separate equipment intended for home integration. Confirm compatibility and installation requirements with the manufacturer and a qualified electrician. Never backfeed home wiring through an ordinary wall outlet or use a so-called suicide cord.

When to consider an integrated solar-storage system
If you want solar generation and outage capability together, compare systems that explicitly include storage and state their off-grid or backup output. “Balcony solar,” “plug-and-play,” or a hybrid product label alone does not establish what will stay powered when the grid fails.
Examples show why the architecture matters
- EcoFlow PowerStream (EU): The product page describes a system combining solar panels, a grid-tied hybrid microinverter with up to 800 W solar input, a portable power station, and smart plugs. Named station examples range from 1,024 Wh to 3,600 Wh; those ratings are not runtime guarantees. EcoFlow PowerStream EU product page
- GoodWe ESA-Athena: GoodWe states up to 1,500 W off-grid output, up to 2,400 W PV input, and expansion to 9.6 kWh. Check the exact configuration and installation requirements before treating those manufacturer specifications as applicable to your needs. GoodWe ESA-Athena product page
- EcoFlow STREAM Ultra (US): The page describes a hybrid inverter and battery, dual AC outlets, and backup reserved for essential appliances. It also says plug-and-play sales and installation are available only in Utah under the cited state restriction. Do not assume the same availability or permissions elsewhere. These products illustrate different system designs; they are not a ranking or independent comparison. Manufacturer specifications can change, so use current documentation for the exact model and configuration.

Check the household connection and local rules
Rules for grid interconnection, exporting excess power, electrical installation, building work, and tenancy vary by location. APsystems qualifies potential export by utility requirements; local export controls may also affect what equipment is allowed. If you need backup for household circuits, ask your utility, local authority, and a qualified electrician which transfer or isolation equipment and installation are permitted.
Availability can be location-specific as well as rule-specific. EcoFlow’s US STREAM page says plug-and-play sale and installation for that product are limited to Utah under the cited state law. Treat that as a product- and location-specific statement, not a general rule for all solar or backup equipment. EcoFlow STREAM Ultra US product page

A practical way to choose
- List what must stay on. Identify appliances and devices, their power needs, and whether they must run at the same time.
- Set the outage duration you need to cover. Use the load list and intended usage to estimate required stored energy; do not infer runtime from a battery’s Wh or kWh rating alone.
- Decide whether appliance-level backup is enough. If plugging devices directly into outlets works, a portable station may fit. If you need selected household circuits powered, investigate compatible transfer or backup equipment and professional installation.
- Decide whether solar charging during the outage is essential. Check that the proposed equipment supports the intended off-grid solar and charging path; an ordinary grid-tied array may shut down rather than charge a station.
- Verify model limits and local permission. Check output, surge capacity, battery expansion, panel compatibility, interconnection and installation requirements, and availability for your exact location.
Without your location, appliance list, required duration, desired circuits, and installation preferences, no particular battery size, savings figure, legal conclusion, or whole-home claim can be responsibly specified.
