Neither paper nor digital reading is always better. Research reviews find a small average comprehension advantage for paper in some conditions—particularly with informational text and when screen reading involves scrolling—but another recent review found no significant overall difference. The right answer depends on what you are reading, how you read it, and whether the outcome is comprehension, reading time, or confidence in your understanding.

What the evidence shows about comprehension

In a 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis, Virginia Clinton combined 33 experiments involving 2,799 participants. The analysis estimated a small advantage for paper over screens on reading performance (g = −0.25, with the effect expressed for screens relative to paper). This is a standardized effect size, not a 25% drop in comprehension. Clinton’s moderator analysis suggested that the difference was concentrated in expository, or informational, texts: the reported estimate was g = −0.32 for expository texts and g = −0.04 for narrative texts. These are average patterns across studies, not predictions for every reader or book. Read the 2019 review.

Effect sizes need careful interpretation. A negative g in this analysis means that screen performance was lower than paper performance on the measured outcome; it does not mean that every participant lost the same amount or that a screen reader failed to understand a quarter of a passage. A pooled estimate combines many designs, texts, and readers. Your result can be smaller, absent, or reversed if your device, layout, prior knowledge, or reading purpose differs from the tested conditions.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 37 experimental studies reached a different overall result: it found no significant difference in reading comprehension between paper and digital formats, while reporting differences under moderator variables. The findings are not a simple contradiction that can be resolved by declaring one format the winner; reviews can differ in the studies and conditions they include, and the pooled result does not mean every paper-and-screen comparison is equal. That disagreement is itself useful. It means a responsible answer to “Is reading on paper better than reading on a screen?” must identify the population, text genre, device, scrolling requirement, and outcome. Neither review establishes a single population-wide percentage for all readers, books, and devices. These are experimental syntheses, not surveys showing how everyone reads in daily life.

How text and screen setup affect the comparison

Informational versus narrative reading

The 2019 review’s paper advantage appeared more clearly for expository material than for narrative text. “Expository” includes information-heavy passages such as textbook sections, explanatory articles, manuals, and reports. For those tasks, paper is a reasonable option to try when understanding and accurate recall matter. The reported estimate for narrative texts was close to zero (g = −0.04), so a novel, memoir, or short story should not automatically be moved to print on the assumption that paper will improve comprehension.

Genre is not the same as difficulty. A complicated novel can demand close attention, and a short article can be easy. The point is to avoid turning a moderator pattern into a rule about all hard reading. If you need evidence for your own task, read comparable passages in both formats and test what you can explain afterward.

Device and scrolling

Digital reading is not one uniform condition. A 2025 network meta-analysis covering 56 studies and 79 effect sizes ranked paper highest, followed by tablets, e-readers, computers, and smartphones. It also reported a more noticeable paper advantage when scrolling was required, with Hedges’ gs of 0.35–0.48 for the scrolling condition. Those figures describe the analysis’s pooled comparisons; the available report does not establish that every population, device, or reading task will show the same result. A ranking is not a guarantee about an individual reader’s experience. Read the 2025 network meta-analysis.

Scrolling is therefore a variable to notice, not a diagnosis. A fixed-page e-reader, a tablet showing a full page, a computer window, and a phone requiring frequent swipes create different navigation demands. The 2025 ranking does not prove that one named model is best, nor that an e-reader is interchangeable with a phone. It supports asking whether the digital presentation requires continuous repositioning and whether that arrangement suits the task.

When comparing formats, keep other conditions as similar as possible: use the same passage, comparable font size, and equivalent wording; allow enough time for a fair attempt; and record whether scrolling was necessary. A comparison that changes the text, length, or difficulty at the same time as the medium cannot tell you much about the medium itself.

Comprehension, speed, and confidence are different outcomes

A format that supports comprehension is not necessarily faster. Clinton’s 2019 review found no reliable reading-time difference between paper and screens (g = 0.08). That estimate should stop a common overclaim: a small comprehension pattern cannot be converted into “paper is slower” or “digital is faster.” Reading time and understanding were separate outcomes in the review.

The same review reported better calibration of performance judgments for paper (g = 0.20). Calibration means that readers’ estimates of how well they understood aligned more closely with their actual performance. It is distinct from comprehension itself. Someone can feel fluent on a screen and still answer fewer questions correctly, or feel uncertain on paper while performing well. Confidence is a signal to check, not a substitute for a comprehension measure.

For an important reading task, use a quick test after each format. Close the text and write a short summary, list the author’s main claims, explain a process in your own words, or answer questions that require details and inferences. Compare the answers rather than relying only on speed, ease, or the number of pages completed. If you are studying, revisit incorrect answers; if you are reading for work, verify that you can apply the information to the decision you need to make.

What about children and digital books?

Adult findings should not be applied automatically to young children. A 2021 meta-analysis by Furenes, Kucirkova, and Bus reviewed 39 studies across 30 articles, covering 1,812 children ages 1–8. When digital and paper books differed only by medium, comprehension was lower for digital books in the reviewed comparisons. The review also considered features such as enhancements, dictionary support, and adult support, so the medium-only result should not be treated as a verdict on every interactive book or shared-reading situation. It also does not establish the same effect for older students. Read the 2021 children’s reading meta-analysis.

For a child in the one-to-eight age range, ask what the digital version adds and whether that addition helps the reading goal. A dictionary, narration, animation, or game-like enhancement may change the activity from simply turning pages to interacting with features. The review examined enhancements and adult support, but the summary does not justify claiming that every enhancement improves learning. Likewise, the medium-only result cannot tell you how an older child, adolescent, or adult student will perform.

Adult participation is another separate condition. Shared reading, prompts, explanations, and questions can alter comprehension regardless of whether the book is printed or displayed on a screen. When choosing for a young reader, note the child’s age, the book’s interactive features, and whether an adult will guide the session instead of treating “paper” and “digital” as complete descriptions.

A practical decision process

  1. Name the outcome. Decide whether you need comprehension, quick completion, accurate self-assessment, or simply an enjoyable reading experience. The studies do not show one format winning every outcome.
  2. Classify the text. Mark it as primarily expository or narrative, while recognizing that many books mix both. The 2019 moderator pattern gives more reason to test paper for information-heavy passages than for stories.
  3. Describe the digital setup. Record whether you are using a tablet, e-reader, computer, or smartphone and whether you must scroll. The 2025 synthesis found device and scrolling differences, so “screen” is too broad a label.
  4. Match the reader. Use adult evidence for conventional adult readers and be cautious with children ages 1–8. For children, include the presence of enhancements, dictionary tools, and adult support in your description.
  5. Run a fair trial when the decision matters. Read similar-length passages in each format under comparable conditions. Avoid changing several variables at once, and do not interpret one tiring session as a universal law.
  6. Check performance. Summarize, answer questions, or apply the information. Compare accuracy and the confidence you had before checking. This separates actual comprehension from the feeling of fluency.
  7. Choose the repeatable option. If results are similar, select the format you can access and use consistently. If paper produces better verified understanding for your task, use it there; if digital performs equally well, its convenience can guide the choice without claiming that digital is inherently superior.

Common pitfalls in the paper-versus-digital debate

“Paper is 25% better.” The g = −0.25 estimate is standardized, not a percentage loss. It summarizes an average difference across experiments.

“Paper always wins.” The 2024 meta-analysis found no significant overall comprehension difference, and the 2019 narrative estimate was close to zero. A blanket rule ignores moderators.

“Digital is faster.” Clinton found no reliable reading-time difference (g = 0.08). Do not infer speed from a comprehension result.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

“All screens are equivalent.” The 2025 network analysis ranked tablets, e-readers, computers, and smartphones differently and identified scrolling as a condition associated with a larger paper advantage.

“Feeling confident proves understanding.” Paper showed better calibration of performance judgments (g = 0.20), which means confidence tracked performance more closely; it does not make confidence a comprehension test.

“Adult findings settle the question for toddlers.” The children’s synthesis covered ages 1–8 and separately considered enhancements and adult support. It should not be generalized automatically to older students or every digital book.

“A laboratory average predicts every daily reading session.” The evidence comes mainly from experimental comparisons. Everyday reading includes different purposes, prior knowledge, layouts, and interruptions, so apply the findings conditionally.

Why there is no universal winner

The evidence summarized here comes mainly from experimental studies and meta-analyses, not a population-wide survey of how all people read all books on all devices. Results depend on text genre, device, scrolling, reader age, and study conditions. One 2023 systematic review of school-related digital-versus-paper reading also examines gaps by gender, socioeconomic status, and rurality, underscoring that the evidence base includes questions beyond a single format ranking. For conventional readers, paper may offer a small comprehension edge in some informational or scrolling conditions, but current reviews do not support saying that paper is always better or that digital reading is inherently worse. Choose based on the task and setup, and separate comprehension from speed and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you remember more from a paper book?

Possibly in some conditions, especially for expository text or screen tasks that require scrolling. Clinton’s 2019 review found a small average paper advantage in reading performance, while a 2024 meta-analysis found no significant overall difference. Test recall with a summary or questions rather than assuming one format will work for everyone.

Are e-books as good as print books for comprehension?

The answer depends on the device, layout, text, and reader. A 2025 synthesis ranked paper above tablets, e-readers, computers, and smartphones overall, with a larger paper difference when scrolling was required, but those pooled results are not guarantees for every e-book or reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is paper faster than digital reading?

No reliable overall speed difference was found in Clinton’s 2019 review (g = 0.08). Comprehension and reading time are separate outcomes, so do not choose paper or digital based on an assumed speed advantage.

Does paper help with novels more than screens?

The 2019 review reported little paper advantage for narrative texts (g = −0.04), compared with a larger reported pattern for expository texts (g = −0.32). That is an average moderator result, not proof that every novel is equally easy on every device.

What format is best for a child learning to read?

For children ages 1–8, a 2021 meta-analysis found lower comprehension for digital books when the only difference was medium. It also examined enhancements, dictionary support, and adult support, so consider the specific features and shared-reading context rather than treating every digital book alike.

How can I tell which format works better for me?

Use the same or closely matched passage in each format, note the device and whether scrolling is required, then summarize the text or answer comprehension questions. Compare verified performance and confidence, not just how fast or easy the reading felt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Paper is not universally better, and digital is not inherently worse. Paper has a small average comprehension advantage in some informational and scrolling conditions, while other reviews find no overall difference. Identify your text, device, reader age, and goal; then verify understanding instead of relying on format assumptions.
