LangGraph is the best starting point for a private workflow that must remember state, pause for approval, and resume reliably. Choose CrewAI when the workflow is naturally a team of role-based agents, AutoGen when agents should coordinate through conversations or asynchronous messages, and OpenHands when the job is software development rather than general business automation.
Those choices are about workflow shape, not popularity. An open-source license does not make an agent private by itself: the model endpoint, tools, credentials, network boundaries, state store, and logs determine where data can travel and who can act on it.
Which open-source agent should you use?
| Framework | Best fit | Core design emphasis | Private-workflow strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LangGraph | Stateful business processes with explicit checkpoints | Graph-based control flow, durable execution, persistence, streaming, observability, and human-in-the-loop control | Clearest model for resumable runs and approval gates | Requires you to design the state machine and policies rather than relying on an informal agent conversation |
| CrewAI | Role-based teams of cooperating agents | Agents, roles, tasks, and crews arranged for autonomous collaboration | Simple mental model for dividing work among specialist agents | Role delegation does not automatically provide durable state, least-privilege tools, or approval controls |
| AutoGen | Conversational or asynchronous multi-agent coordination | Agents exchanging messages to accomplish a task | Natural fit for event-driven conversations and flexible collaboration | Open-ended dialogue can be harder to constrain, replay, and audit than an explicit workflow |
| OpenHands | Software-development tasks | A coding agent that operates in a development environment | Specialized environment for coding actions and feedback loops | It is an application for coding work, not a general-purpose orchestration layer for every private business process |
LangChain’s official open-source overview summarizes its stack this way: “Deep Agents, LangChain, and LangGraph form one open source agent stack.” In that description, LangGraph is the runtime for custom workflows; its cited capabilities include durable execution, human-in-the-loop control, fault tolerance, streaming, persistence, and observability. AWS guidance and a 2026 comparison associate CrewAI with role-based autonomous teams, AutoGen with conversational or event-driven coordination, and OpenHands with coding workflows. Framework features, model integrations, deployment choices, maintenance, and licensing can change, so verify the current documentation before committing to an implementation.
What “private” means in an autonomous workflow
Self-hosting the orchestration code is only one part of privacy. A run can still disclose information if a hosted model receives prompts, a tool sends records to a third-party API, credentials are exposed to every agent, or logs retain sensitive text indefinitely.

Model endpoint
Decide where inference occurs for every model call. A local model server keeps prompts inside your network when configured correctly. A private cloud endpoint may provide contractual and network controls while still leaving data outside your own hardware. A public endpoint is a separate risk decision. Record the endpoint used by each workflow and prevent silent fallback to a different provider.
Tools and data connectors
Agents become risky when tools have broad permissions. Give each tool a narrow function, validate its arguments, restrict reachable hosts, and return only the fields needed for the next step. A read-only database query tool should not also be able to update records; an email-drafting tool should not have permission to send.
Credentials
Keep secrets outside prompts and agent memory. Use a secret manager or protected runtime variables, issue separate credentials per workflow, rotate them, and scope them to the minimum actions. Never paste a bearer token into a task description or allow an agent to print the process environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsState and logs
Durable state is useful only when its storage is protected. Encrypt state and logs in transit and at rest, define retention periods, redact personal or confidential fields, and restrict operator access. Treat prompts, tool arguments, tool results, intermediate messages, and error traces as potentially sensitive records.
Deployment boundary
Run the orchestrator, model server, tool services, and state store in a network layout that reflects your threat model. Separate development from production, deny unnecessary outbound traffic, and isolate code-execution tools in a sandbox. “On premises” is not a security guarantee if the runtime can freely reach the internet or shared credentials.
How the four options differ on the decisions that matter
Compare candidates on five practical questions rather than on a generic “agent framework” label.

- Who owns state? Can the system represent current status, inputs, tool results, approvals, retries, and completed work in a durable record?
- How deterministic is execution? Can you specify the next permitted transition, or can an agent invent the next step through an open-ended conversation?
- Where can a human intervene? Can a run pause before an irreversible action and resume from the same state after approval or rejection?
- How are tools and credentials isolated? Can each agent receive only the tools and secrets required for its role?
- Can you operate it locally? Does your deployment support the model endpoint, persistence, networking, tracing, and audit controls you require?

LangGraph: the controlled, resumable choice
Use LangGraph when a workflow has a known sequence of stages, meaningful state, and actions that must be approved or audited. Model the process as a graph whose nodes perform bounded work and whose transitions represent allowed next steps. That structure makes it easier to answer “what happened?”, retry a failed operation, and continue after an outage without asking an agent to reconstruct the past from a transcript.

Workflows that suit it
- Classifying an incoming request, gathering records, drafting a response, requesting approval, and then publishing or sending it.
- Investigating an alert through several read-only systems before a human authorizes remediation.
- Processing documents in stages where each result must be stored and independently reviewed.
How to design a private LangGraph workflow
- Define a typed state record. Include the request identifier, current stage, validated inputs, tool results, approval status, retry count, and timestamps. Keep secrets out of this record.
- Make each node narrow. A node should validate input, call one bounded tool or model operation, and return a predictable state update. Avoid a single node that can browse, edit databases, and send messages.
- Add explicit transition rules. Route invalid data to a correction path, transient failures to a bounded retry path, and high-impact actions to an approval node.
- Persist checkpoints. Store state after important transitions so a process can resume after a worker restart. Confirm that the persistence layer has access controls and a retention policy.
- Place approval before the side effect. Show the reviewer the proposed action, its supporting data, the exact tool call, and the identity under which it will run. Resume only after a recorded decision.
- Instrument the run. Capture stage timings, model requests, tool outcomes, retries, and approval events while redacting sensitive values.
This approach costs more design effort than letting agents converse freely, but it gives private-workflow operators a clear boundary around authority and a reproducible failure path.
CrewAI: role-based teams of agents
CrewAI is a natural fit when the problem is best explained as a team: for example, a researcher gathers facts, an analyst checks them, and an editor prepares a deliverable. Its role-based architecture gives each agent a recognizable responsibility and lets you compose tasks into a crew.
Where it helps
- Parallel specialist work, such as collecting information from separate internal systems.
- Prototypes where a team metaphor is easier for stakeholders to understand than a formal state machine.
- Workflows in which agents produce drafts for a separate validation or approval stage.
Controls to add yourself
Do not equate a role description with a security boundary. Define an allow-list of tools for every role, enforce argument validation outside the model, and keep write operations behind a separate service. Persist task inputs and outputs so a failed crew can be diagnosed. If an action is irreversible, stop the crew and obtain approval before execution rather than relying on an instruction such as “ask before sending.”
CrewAI is therefore strongest when rapid multi-agent setup and a simple division of labor matter more than a deeply explicit execution graph. If resumability and approval semantics are central requirements, evaluate whether you need a graph-oriented runtime around or instead of the crew.
AutoGen: conversational and event-driven coordination
AutoGen is designed for agents that converse to accomplish a task. The AutoGen paper presents an open-source framework in which multiple agents coordinate through conversation, while AWS guidance places it in conversational and event-driven use cases.

Good use cases
- Negotiating a plan among specialist agents before a separate executor performs approved work.
- Asynchronous systems in which agents publish messages when new information arrives.
- Exploratory analysis where the path is not known in advance and dialogue is part of the problem.
How to keep conversations private and bounded
- Set a maximum turn count, token budget, and wall-clock duration for every run.
- Define which agent may call which tool; do not expose all tools to every participant.
- Require structured outputs for decisions that feed another agent, and reject messages that fail validation.
- Separate planning from execution. Let conversational agents propose actions, then pass approved actions to a constrained executor.
- Record message ancestry and tool calls so an operator can reconstruct why an action occurred.
Conversation is flexible, but flexibility can make behavior difficult to replay. For regulated or high-impact workflows, combine AutoGen-style discussion with an external approval and state layer, or choose a framework whose primary abstraction is an explicit workflow.
OpenHands: a specialized coding agent
OpenHands belongs on this list when the private workflow is software development: inspecting a repository, editing files, running tests, and iterating on feedback. It is a coding-agent application, not a general orchestration layer for arbitrary business processes.
Use it when
- The agent needs a development workspace and a tight code-edit/test loop.
- Repositories, build tools, and test output are the main sources of context.
- You can isolate the workspace and review changes before they reach a shared branch or production system.
Private coding safeguards
Use an ephemeral, least-privilege workspace; provide only the repository and dependencies required for the task; block access to production credentials; and restrict network egress. Require human review of diffs, dependency changes, generated scripts, and test commands. Treat a passing test as evidence about the test suite, not proof that the change is safe for deployment.

A practical selection method
Choose by the shape and consequence of the work, in this order:
- Is the primary task coding? Start with OpenHands and design the sandbox and review process around the repository.
- Is the primary interaction a conversation among agents? Evaluate AutoGen, adding bounded turns, structured messages, and a separate executor for side effects.
- Is the workflow a team of named specialists? Evaluate CrewAI, with explicit tool permissions and an approval stage for writes.
- Must the process pause, resume, retry, and prove what happened? Start with LangGraph and model the state and transitions before adding autonomous behavior.
Some systems combine these patterns: a graph can invoke a role-based crew for one stage, or a coding agent can be called from a controlled approval workflow. Keep the outer boundary responsible for credentials, persistence, and irreversible actions.
Blueprint for a private self-hosted deployment
1. Write the threat model
List the data classes, users, adversaries, allowed destinations, and actions that could cause harm. Mark operations as read-only, reversible, or irreversible. This determines where approval and isolation are mandatory.

2. Select and pin the model endpoint
Choose a local or private endpoint that meets your quality and capacity needs. Pin the endpoint in configuration, disable unapproved fallbacks, and monitor requests for accidental routing to an external service.
3. Build tool wrappers
Expose small, typed operations rather than unrestricted shell or database access. Validate identifiers, paths, query shapes, and payload sizes before a tool runs. Return stable error categories so the workflow can retry safely.
4. Separate planning from execution
Let a model propose a plan, but have deterministic code check policy, permissions, and required fields. Execute only the approved, validated operation. This pattern is especially important for messaging, financial changes, account administration, and production infrastructure.
5. Add persistence and recovery
Store checkpoints, event history, and approval decisions in a protected durable store. Test worker restarts, duplicate deliveries, timeouts, partial tool failures, and a human rejection. Recovery should be a designed path, not an instruction to “try again.”
6. Isolate execution
Run untrusted code and file operations in a sandbox with a disposable filesystem, restricted network, CPU and memory limits, and no production secrets. Apply the same principle to browser automation and document parsers.

8. Test with adversarial cases
Include prompt injection in documents, malicious tool arguments, malformed model output, sensitive data in logs, repeated events, and partial outages. Verify that the system refuses unsafe requests and that refusal itself is recorded without exposing the protected content.
9. Monitor and review
Track run status, transition failures, tool latency, approval wait time, token usage, and policy denials. Sample traces for quality while redacting personal and secret values. Review permissions and retention whenever a tool or model changes.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The agent sends data to an unexpected service | Implicit model or tool fallback | Pin endpoints, restrict egress, and alert on unknown destinations |
| A run repeats an external action after a timeout | No idempotency key or durable record of the attempt | Assign an operation identifier, record the result, and make retries conditional |
| Every agent can read every secret | Shared runtime identity | Use per-tool or per-role identities and inject only short-lived, scoped credentials |
| An approval is recorded but the wrong action executes | Approval covers a vague intention rather than an exact operation | Display and bind approval to the concrete tool, arguments, target, and version |
| Operators cannot explain a result | Only final text was logged | Record state transitions, messages, tool calls, policy decisions, and timestamps with redaction |
| A conversational run never settles | Unbounded turns or conflicting agent goals | Set turn and time limits, define a termination message, and escalate to a human |
| Local deployment becomes unreliable under load | Model capacity and orchestration concurrency were not measured together | Queue work, cap parallel runs, monitor latency, and degrade to a human queue instead of silently dropping state |
Maintenance and change management
Agent frameworks, model adapters, deployment methods, and partner terms are volatile. Before upgrading, export a representative set of traces, replay approval and failure scenarios in a non-production environment, and compare tool calls as well as final text. Pin compatible versions, document configuration, and maintain a rollback path for the orchestrator, model server, and state schema.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reassess privacy whenever you add a connector or model. A new summarization step can change what leaves the network; a new debugging logger can change retention; and a new tool can turn a read-only workflow into an operational one. Review those changes as security changes, not merely feature updates.
Bottom line
For most private autonomous workflows, start with LangGraph because explicit state, durable execution, observability, and human approval map directly to the controls that privacy-sensitive operations need. Choose CrewAI for a role-based team, AutoGen for conversational or event-driven coordination, and OpenHands for coding. Whichever framework you select, privacy comes from the complete system: controlled model routing, least-privilege tools, protected credentials, isolated execution, durable audit records, and a human gate before consequential actions.
