There is no single hardware specification for an open-source Adobe replacement. Choose the application that matches your work, then size the computer for its heaviest workload. Krita and GIMP are primarily 2D raster tools; ComfyUI runs local AI generation and editing; Blender handles 3D, compositing and motion graphics; and Kdenlive edits video. For a mixed setup, plan around local AI or 3D first because those workloads place the clearest demands on GPU memory, while video playback depends heavily on CPU cores and system RAM.

A practical mixed-workload target is 32 GB of RAM, a recent multi-core processor, a modern discrete GPU with substantial VRAM, fast SSD storage and a current 64-bit operating system. That is an editorial planning target synthesized from the applications’ published guidance, not a vendor-certified minimum.

Requirements at a glance

The table separates published minimums from recommendations. “Not stated” means the cited official material does not provide a number; it does not mean the application has no requirement.

Choose hardware by the work you actually do

Krita: modest baseline, reliable graphics drivers

Krita’s official download requirements list Windows 8.1 or higher, macOS 10.15, and Linux. The published minimum is 4 GB of RAM, with 16 GB recommended. Graphics hardware must provide OpenGL 3.0 or newer or Direct3D 11. Krita also lists any graphics tablet compatible with the operating system, so tablet drivers are part of a usable setup even though they are not a GPU specification.

The Krita manual explains that OpenGL accelerates painting, canvas zooming, rotation and panning, and recommends OpenGL 3.2 or above for the best results. It reports that NVIDIA and recent Intel GPUs generally deliver the best behavior. AMD performance can depend on the installed driver; under Linux, the manual specifically notes that the free Radeon driver works on supported AMD GPUs.

For Krita-only work, 16 GB of RAM and a GPU with dependable OpenGL or Direct3D support are a sensible purchase target. Extra VRAM is useful for very large canvases and many layers, but Krita’s published requirements do not establish a separate VRAM number.

GIMP 3.2.6: broad platform coverage, no published numeric minimum in the cited release notice

The official GIMP 3.2.6 release announcement confirms 64-bit packages for Linux on x86 and ARM, Windows on x86 and ARM, and macOS on both Intel and Apple Silicon. That makes GIMP viable on a wide range of current desktop and laptop systems.

The cited release material does not publish a numeric RAM or GPU minimum. Do not transfer Krita’s 4 GB/16 GB figures or another application’s VRAM number to GIMP and label them as GIMP requirements. In practice, large photographs, deep layer stacks, high-resolution filters and third-party plug-ins consume more memory, so leave headroom beyond the operating system, but the official source does not define a universal threshold.

ComfyUI: size the GPU for the model, not the application name

ComfyUI is a node-based interface and backend for image, video, audio, 3D and text workflows. Its project documentation states that manual installation supports all operating systems and GPU types, specifically naming NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon and Ascend.

There is no honest single “minimum VRAM” figure for ComfyUI. Memory use changes with the model, numerical precision, image or video resolution, batch size, control networks, animation length and workflow graph. The project documents asynchronous execution, partial graph re-execution, VRAM and RAM management, model offloading and quantized models. Those features can reduce peak GPU memory by moving data to system RAM or using lower-precision models, but they may increase processing time and do not make every model fit on every card.

Choose a modern discrete GPU with enough VRAM for the exact models and resolutions you intend to run. Check each model’s own documentation, then allow additional capacity for the operating system, the UI and intermediate tensors. A card that runs a small image model may still fail on a larger model, high-resolution upscale or video graph. NVIDIA is one officially supported family, not the only one; AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon and Ascend are also listed by the project.

Blender: the clearest case for 32 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM

Blender’s current requirements specify Windows 8.1 64-bit, macOS 13 Ventura as the minimum for current releases requiring Apple Silicon, and Linux with glibc 2.28 or newer. For Windows and Linux, the minimum includes a four-core CPU with SSE4.2, 8 GB of RAM and a GPU with 2 GB of VRAM supporting OpenGL 4.3 and Vulkan 1.3. The recommended configuration is an eight-core CPU, 32 GB of RAM and 8 GB of VRAM.

Blender supports NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPU families on Windows and Linux, subject to the driver requirements on its current requirements page. GPU rendering through Cycles has additional backend requirements, so verify the requirements for the rendering device you select before buying a card. Scene complexity, texture resolution, particle systems and compositing can consume VRAM well beyond the 2 GB minimum.

If 3D rendering or compositing is central to your work, use the recommended 32 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM as the planning floor rather than the bare minimum. More memory may be needed for dense scenes, simulations or multiple applications open together.

Kdenlive: match CPU cores and RAM to the delivery format

Kdenlive’s current download guidance lists Windows 10 or newer, Linux packages and macOS 13 Ventura or newer. Its installation manual gives workload-based guidance instead of one universal computer specification:

  • Standard-definition video: at least one 2 GHz CPU core and 4 GB of RAM.
  • High-definition video: four CPU cores and 8 GB of RAM.
  • 4K video: eight CPU cores and 16 GB of RAM.

The minimum GPU requirement is compatible OpenGL 2.0. On Windows, cards with compatible DirectX 9 or DirectX 11 drivers can also be used. Kdenlive warns that timeline playback relies heavily on the CPU even though render profiles can use GPU acceleration. A powerful GPU therefore cannot compensate for too few CPU cores when scrubbing a complex timeline.

Operating-system compatibility

Operating system Krita GIMP 3.2.6 ComfyUI manual install Blender Kdenlive
Windows 8.1 or newer 64-bit x86 and ARM packages Supported GPU families include NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon and Ascend; follow the project’s installation method for your system 8.1 64-bit minimum 10 or newer
macOS 10.15 Intel and Apple Silicon packages Apple Silicon is explicitly listed among supported GPU types 13 Ventura minimum for current releases requiring Apple Silicon 13 Ventura or newer
Linux Supported 64-bit x86 and ARM packages Supported; manual installation is intended for all operating systems and listed GPU types glibc 2.28 or newer Packages available; distribution-specific details apply

“Supported” does not guarantee identical performance across distributions, drivers or package formats. Keep the operating system within the application’s stated range and install the GPU driver recommended for that platform. Blender’s Linux glibc requirement is especially important on older distributions; a newer GPU alone will not satisfy an outdated system library.

How to plan one computer for all five applications

1. Set the ceiling with local AI or 3D

Start with the largest ComfyUI models and Blender scenes you expect to use. Those workloads determine GPU VRAM and often system RAM. If your AI work is limited to small images and your 3D projects are simple, you can spend less; if you expect high-resolution generation, animation or heavy Cycles rendering, prioritize VRAM and cooling before cosmetic CPU upgrades.

2. Choose system memory with simultaneous use in mind

Use 16 GB as a comfortable level for Krita and 4K Kdenlive guidance, but 32 GB is the more useful mixed-workload target because it leaves room for the operating system, browser, source footage, Blender, ComfyUI and image editors at the same time. ComfyUI offloading can move data into system RAM, so insufficient RAM can become the limiting factor even when the GPU has enough VRAM.

3. Select a recent multi-core CPU

CPU cores matter most for Kdenlive timeline playback, video decoding and many Blender operations. The published Kdenlive guidance rises from one 2 GHz core for SD to eight cores for 4K; Blender recommends eight cores. A recent multi-core processor is therefore a better mixed-stack choice than an older high-frequency dual-core chip.

4. Treat VRAM and system RAM as different budgets

VRAM holds GPU-resident textures, model weights and intermediate data; system RAM holds the operating system, application data and any content offloaded from the GPU. More system RAM cannot turn a card with inadequate VRAM into a high-memory accelerator, although offloading and quantization may allow slower execution. Conversely, a high-VRAM card does not remove the need for enough system memory for 4K editing or large Blender scenes.

5. Use fast SSD storage and leave working space

These applications load large models, texture libraries, caches and video files. A fast SSD reduces launch, cache and project-load delays compared with a hard disk. Keep free space for Kdenlive proxies and render files, Blender caches and ComfyUI model files; running the system drive nearly full can cause failures unrelated to GPU capability.

6. Verify the tablet and display path for 2D work

Krita requires a tablet compatible with the operating system if you draw with a pressure-sensitive device. Check the tablet manufacturer’s driver support for your exact Windows, macOS or Linux version. A GPU can meet the API requirement while a broken tablet driver still makes the application unusable for illustration.

Check an existing computer before upgrading

  1. Record the operating system and architecture. Confirm whether Windows is 64-bit, which macOS version is installed, or which Linux distribution and glibc version are present. Compare that information with each application’s minimum before evaluating graphics hardware.
  2. Identify the CPU. Note core count and, for Blender’s Windows/Linux minimum, whether it supports SSE4.2. For Kdenlive, compare the core count with the SD, HD or 4K tier you intend to edit.
  3. Check installed RAM. Leave room for the operating system and background services; do not treat total installed memory as memory available to an application.
  4. Check the GPU model and dedicated VRAM. On Windows, run dxdiag and inspect the Display tab. On macOS, open Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → Graphics/Displays. On Linux, lspci | grep -E 'VGA|3D|Display' identifies the adapter; use your distribution’s graphics tools to confirm driver and memory details.
  5. Check the graphics API and driver. Krita needs OpenGL 3.0+ or Direct3D 11, Blender’s stated Windows/Linux minimum needs OpenGL 4.3 and Vulkan 1.3, and Kdenlive needs OpenGL 2.0 or a compatible Windows DirectX driver. An old driver can make a capable GPU appear unsupported.
  6. Test the heaviest real project. Open a representative Blender scene, ComfyUI workflow or Kdenlive timeline. Watch for out-of-memory errors, missing textures, driver resets and dropped frames rather than relying only on the application launching.

Common limits and how to address them

“The application opens, but generation fails” in ComfyUI

This usually indicates a model or workflow that exceeds available VRAM or system RAM. Reduce image or video resolution, lower the batch size, use a quantized model or enable the project’s offloading options. If the workflow still exceeds memory, use a GPU with more VRAM; there is no universal ComfyUI number that guarantees every model will run.

Canvas stutter or missing acceleration in Krita

Confirm that the GPU exposes the required OpenGL or Direct3D version and update the driver. On Linux with AMD hardware, driver behavior matters; the Krita manual specifically discusses the free Radeon driver on supported GPUs. If drawing input is erratic, troubleshoot the tablet driver separately from the GPU.

Blender scenes render out of memory

The 2 GB VRAM minimum is not a practical target for demanding scenes. Reduce texture sizes, simplify geometry, close other GPU-heavy applications or render on a device with more VRAM. For Cycles, verify the selected backend’s additional requirements and driver support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kdenlive playback drops frames

Because timeline playback is CPU-heavy, check core count and RAM before replacing the GPU. Lower preview resolution, generate proxies for demanding footage and close memory-intensive applications. GPU acceleration can help rendering, but it does not eliminate the CPU requirement for smooth editing.

GIMP has no number to compare against

The cited GIMP 3.2.6 release announcement confirms platform packages but does not state a numeric RAM or GPU minimum. Evaluate performance with your actual image dimensions, layer count and plug-ins rather than presenting another application’s specification as a GIMP requirement.

How the proprietary baseline differs

Adobe’s After Effects 25.x requirements provide a useful comparison point, not a rule for open-source software. On Windows 10 64-bit version 22H2 or later, Adobe specifies a discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM and OpenCL support for systems using Intel or AMD GPUs. Open-source alternatives do not inherit that requirement: Krita, Blender and Kdenlive publish different API and memory guidance, while ComfyUI’s memory needs vary by workflow and GIMP’s cited release notice gives no numeric GPU minimum.

Buying recommendations by scenario

  • Krita-only illustration: 16 GB RAM, a GPU meeting OpenGL 3.0+/Direct3D 11, current drivers and a compatible tablet. The published 4 GB RAM figure is a minimum, not a comfortable multitasking target.
  • GIMP-only photography: use a supported 64-bit Windows, macOS or Linux build. Since the cited official material gives no numeric GPU or RAM minimum, size memory around your largest images and plug-in set.
  • Local AI with ComfyUI: buy the GPU for the specific models, resolutions and batch sizes you plan to run. Confirm VRAM needs per model and retain system RAM for offloading and the rest of the desktop.
  • Blender-centered 3D: target the recommended 32 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM, with an eight-core CPU, then check the Cycles backend you intend to use.
  • Kdenlive 4K: follow the published eight-core CPU and 16 GB RAM guidance, use fast storage for media and caches, and remember that playback is CPU-sensitive.
  • All five applications: choose 32 GB RAM, a recent multi-core CPU, a modern discrete GPU with substantial VRAM, fast SSD storage and a current 64-bit OS. Treat this as a practical synthesis rather than a guaranteed minimum for every AI model or Blender scene.
