Ookla’s Speedtest Pulse is a separate hardware-and-service tool for broadband field technicians. A technician plugs the unit into a customer router’s Ethernet port, runs the workflow from a smartphone app, and uses the resulting analysis to narrow a fault to the internet connection, the local Wi‑Fi network, or an individual client device. That positioning comes from launch coverage published November 10, 2025; it is not an independent performance test.

What Speedtest Pulse is—and is not

Pulse is described as a handheld diagnostic device that works with a router and phone app. It is not a built-in router feature or a consumer Speedtest webpage. The reported goal is to give installation and support technicians more context than a single download or upload result.

Ookla’s launch account says the device obtains data directly from the customer’s router, sends it to a smartphone application, and turns the measurements into troubleshooting guidance. The company said it had no immediate plan to integrate Pulse into routers or broadband gateways. These details are reported intentions and capabilities, not independently verified results. Light Reading’s launch report describes the hardware and workflow.

How a technician uses it

  1. Connect the hardware: plug Pulse into an available Ethernet port on the customer’s router.
  2. Start the test: use the companion smartphone app to initiate the announced one-tap Active Pulse procedure.
  3. Collect router and Wi‑Fi data: Pulse gathers performance information from the router and the surrounding connection path.
  4. Review the diagnosis: the app is intended to indicate whether the likely source is the service connection, the in-home Wi‑Fi network, or a particular client device.
  5. Document the visit: the resulting report can record installation quality and provide evidence for later troubleshooting, according to launch coverage.

The practical difference from a basic speed test is the attempted separation of service, wireless, and client-device causes. The sources do not publish the app’s exact metrics, supported phones, router compatibility list, or diagnostic thresholds.

Active Pulse and the Continuous Pulse roadmap

Active Pulse

Active Pulse was the mode reported as available in the initial version on November 10, 2025. It was presented as a one-tap test for identifying potential problems during a technician visit.

Continuous Pulse

Ookla also announced Continuous Pulse for ongoing observation of intermittent faults. Light Reading placed it on a 2026 roadmap, while BetaNews described it as expected “at some point next year” from the 2025 announcement. Neither launch-era report confirms that Continuous Pulse subsequently shipped, so its availability should be treated as unverified.

[Upgraded] AURSINC NanoVNA-H Vector Network Analyzer 9KHz -1.5GHz Latest HW V3.7 HF VHF UHF Antenna Analyzer, Measuring S Parameters, SWR, Phase, Delay, Smith Chart
  • [UPGRADED NanoVNA-H] New HW Version V3.7. It is upgradeable as new firmware is developed. With MicroSD card port now can have the measurement data or the screenshots saved in the it at anytime. Added battery circuit management, more secure. Redesigned PCB, you can connect to mobile phone with Type C-Type C cable (original PCB needs OTG cable), see a clear HD image on your phone. Added a ABS case, which is protective and dust-proof. Disply: 2.8 inch TFT (320 x240).
  • [IMPROVED FREQUENCY ALGORITHM] The improved frequency algorithm can use the odd harmonic extension of si5351 to support the measurement frequency up to 1.5GHz. The 9KHz-300MHz frequency range of the si5351 direct output provides better than 70dB dynamic, The extended 300M-900MHz band provides better than 60dB of dynamics, and the 900M-1.5GHz band is better than 40dB of dynamics.
  • [MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS] The default firmware main function is used for antenna performance measurement. The TX/RX method can measure the complete S11 and S21 parameters. If you need to obtain S12 and S22, you need to manually replace the transceiver port wiring. The CH0 output level is increased to 0dBm when using the fundamental wave, resulting in more accurate reflection measurement.
  • [SUPPORT ANDROID PHONE & PC SOFTSARE CONTROL] Designed a practical and simple control application on PC, you can download touchstone(SNP) files for radio design and simulation software. There is a PC interface that adds functionality and lets you work interactively on a bigger screen. Supports time domain analysis function (TDR). Compatible with most Android mobile phones, convenient for connecting to mobile phones. Support Windows Computer Control.
  • [STRONG AND SECURE POWER SUPPLY] This VNA is battery powered or USB powered. Built in 650mAh battery, could work for 2 hours continuously. For longer measurement time, kindly connect an external power source. The product interface displays battery usage, providing a clear understanding of the power status.

Where Pulse fits in an operator’s toolset

BetaNews says Pulse connects automatically with Speedtest Insights for centralized performance tracking and can be incorporated into existing management systems. No integration catalog or compatibility matrix was supplied, so operators would need current documentation from Ookla before planning deployment.

Ookla initially targeted direct sales to major broadband operators. Light Reading reported pilots with unnamed operators and said the company might later consider ISP channel partners. That reporting does not establish a current retail channel, named partner, public price, purchase terms, or present pilot status.

What Ookla says Pulse is meant to solve

Stephen Bye, Ookla’s president and CEO, said technicians had been forced to choose between “overly simple apps and cost-prohibitive expert systems.” He described Pulse as a way to validate in-home Wi‑Fi quality, solve problems during the visit, and improve customer experience. BetaNews published the full statement on November 10, 2025.

Anssi Tauriainen, Ookla’s senior vice president of engineering, said technicians were receiving large amounts of raw data without recommendations. He characterized Pulse as translating radio-frequency data and throughput metrics into actionable recommendations. Those are executive descriptions of the product’s intended value, not independent evidence that it improves first-visit resolution.

Figures attached to the launch claims

  • BetaNews reported that Pulse integrates with Ookla’s network of more than 15,000 servers. That is a company/product-context figure relayed by the article, not an independently audited statistic.
  • Bye said Ookla’s advanced expertise was trusted by “90 percent of the Fortune 500.” This is his attributed claim and is not independently verified in the available coverage.

What remains unknown before buying

  • Current availability, price, contract or subscription terms, and whether hardware and service must be purchased separately.
  • The shipping status of Continuous Pulse after its announced 2026 roadmap.
  • Supported smartphone models, router and gateway compatibility, hardware specifications, and any required account or cloud service.
  • Named ISP pilots, channel partners, integration details, accuracy benchmarks, and measured customer outcomes.

Because the available reporting is launch-era coverage, an operator should request a current product brief, deployment requirements, and support commitments from Ookla before treating Pulse as an approved standard.

The Bottom Line

Speedtest Pulse represents Ookla’s move from consumer speed numbers toward technician-led fault isolation: connect at the router, analyze on a phone, and distinguish service, Wi‑Fi, and client-device problems. Its launch capabilities and roadmap are reported, but present availability, pricing, Continuous Pulse status, compatibility, and independent performance remain unestablished.
