For most 24/7 YouTube channels, use RTMPS if your encoder supports the format you need. YouTube recommends it for general live ingestion, and it carries a continuous stream rather than HLS’s segmented uploads. Choose HLS when you specifically need a supported codec or HDR workflow that your RTMP/RTMPS setup cannot provide and can accept higher latency. NGINX RTMP is a server-side relay or streaming component; using it does not decide which protocol the final connection to YouTube uses.
What the comparison is actually about
RTMP and HLS describe different ways to deliver live media to YouTube. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure connection; YouTube recommends it as a general ingest choice. HLS ingest sends media segments and playlists to YouTube over HTTPS. NGINX is a separate part of the system: it may receive or relay a stream, or participate in an HLS workflow, but the protocol and packaging on the YouTube-facing leg still have to meet YouTube’s requirements.
That distinction matters in a 24/7 setup. The relevant choice is the protocol used for the final YouTube ingest, not simply whether an NGINX configuration contains the word “HLS.”
RTMPS vs. HLS for YouTube Live
| Consideration | RTMP/RTMPS ingest | HLS ingest |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | Usually the more practical choice when lower ingest latency matters. YouTube recommends RTMPS, particularly where low latency is needed. | Higher latency because video is sent in segments rather than as a continuous stream. YouTube disables its Ultra low-latency option for HLS. |
| Format needs | Use it when your encoder supports the codecs and workflow you intend to send over RTMP/RTMPS. | Can suit workflows needing supported formats such as HEVC, or cases where RTMP encoder capabilities are insufficient, including some HDR workflows. Confirm current format constraints in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. |
| Transport and packaging | A continuous RTMP-family stream; use RTMPS for secure transport to YouTube. | HTTPS uploads of TS media segments with a compliant rolling playlist and specified request behavior. |
| Encoder requirements | YouTube publishes general encoder settings; confirm your particular encoder supports RTMPS and the selected codecs. | The encoder must implement YouTube’s HLS ingest behavior, not merely generate HLS for ordinary playback. |
| 24/7 reliability | The protocol alone does not establish uptime. Reconnects, restarts, source continuity, monitoring and failover need testing. | The same operational factors apply, plus segment and playlist handling. HLS is not inherently more reliable. |
YouTube states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” Its encoder guidance says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” The relative latency guidance does not establish a specific end-to-end viewer delay.

When to choose each protocol
Choose RTMPS for an ordinary always-on channel
Start with RTMPS when your encoder supports it and you do not have a specific HLS-only format requirement. It is YouTube’s recommended general ingest approach and avoids configuring segmented HTTPS uploads. Verify the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio settings against YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose HLS for a specific format or encoder workflow
HLS can be the right choice when its supported codec or HDR-related capabilities are needed and the encoder can produce YouTube-compliant HLS. YouTube’s developer documentation characterizes HLS as a choice for premium content requiring high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency. That is a use-case distinction, not a promise that HLS improves quality in every setup.

Before switching, confirm the current YouTube Live Control Room HLS endpoint and encoder compatibility. YouTube’s HLS setup documentation specifies segment durations of 1–4 seconds, MPEG-2 TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte-range uploads. Encryption other than HTTPS is unsupported. These are YouTube ingest requirements, not universal limits for every HLS implementation.
Where NGINX RTMP fits
The third-party nginx-rtmp-module documents RTMP streaming and push/pull relay capabilities, and can also support HLS or DASH functions in certain configurations. It can sit between an encoder or source and YouTube. In that architecture, assess the source-to-NGINX leg and the NGINX-to-YouTube leg separately: they do not have to use the same protocol.

Do not confuse the third-party RTMP module with NGINX’s built-in ngx_http_hls_module. The built-in HTTP module serves HLS from MP4/MOV files; F5’s technical specifications identify RTMP streaming as provided by a third-party module. Likewise, generating or serving ordinary HLS from NGINX does not automatically meet YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements: YouTube expects compliant media segments and playlists uploaded over HTTPS. F5 documents its RTMP module support and configuration separately in its RTMP module guide.
Configure and validate a 24/7 ingest
- Draw the path. Record the source or encoder, any NGINX relay, and the final YouTube destination. Mark the protocol, codecs, audio/video muxing and endpoint for each leg.
- Pick the YouTube ingest method. Use RTMPS for the general case when supported; use HLS only when its format support or encoder workflow is needed and the encoder implements YouTube’s requirements.
- Set the YouTube endpoint and stream key in the encoder. Copy the current endpoint and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private, and verify which leg of an NGINX relay is responsible for connecting to YouTube.
- Match the media settings. Set resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate and keyframe interval according to the current YouTube encoder guidance and your encoder’s capabilities. For HLS, also check segment duration, TS format, playlist window and HTTPS request behavior against the HLS requirements.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with the intended motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring health; a short static test may not reveal issues that appear during normal playback.
- Test failures deliberately. For a 24/7 deployment, verify recovery after network loss, encoder or relay process restart, and host restart. Check that the source resumes at the intended point, the YouTube connection is re-established, and alerts reach someone who can act. Neither protocol alone guarantees unattended recovery.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports unsupported settings: Recheck the selected endpoint, key, codec and encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. If using HLS, verify TS segments, the 1–4-second segment duration, rolling playlist limit and HTTPS POST/PUT behavior.
- HLS upload fails despite working HLS playback: A local playlist that plays in a browser or media player is not proof of YouTube ingest compliance. Confirm the encoder uploads segments and playlist using YouTube’s required HTTPS behavior; byte ranges and non-HTTPS encryption are not supported.
- Viewers report more delay after switching: This is consistent with HLS’s segmented delivery. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP and disables Ultra low latency for HLS. If your format requirements permit, test RTMPS instead.
- The stream does not return after an interruption: Check reconnect settings on the encoder and relay, process supervision, host/network availability, and whether the source itself is still producing media. A protocol selection is not a restart or failover plan.
- NGINX HLS output does not reach YouTube: Identify whether NGINX is merely serving HLS for playback or whether a component is actually uploading YouTube-compliant segments and playlists to the HLS ingest endpoint.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a different option from managing an NGINX relay and encoder yourself: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the video looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
