You can migrate from Fluentd to Fluent Bit, but it is not a matter of renaming a configuration file. The collectors use different configuration models and plugin ecosystems, so plan to remap inputs, outputs, parsers, filters, buffers, credentials, and custom processing. Inventory your existing pipeline, test one plugin and route at a time, then roll out gradually with delivery checks and a rollback path.
What changes when you move from Fluentd to Fluent Bit?
Both tools collect and process telemetry and can act as forwarders or aggregators, but they make different trade-offs. Fluentd uses C and Ruby and has a broader Ruby/C plugin ecosystem. Fluent Bit is written in C and is designed for a lighter deployment footprint. That can make Fluent Bit a better fit for resource-constrained agents, while Fluentd may remain preferable when a pipeline depends on plugins or custom Ruby behavior that has no suitable Fluent Bit equivalent.
The Fluent Bit project’s current manual lists the following indicative memory figures. They are documentation values, not measurements of a particular workload.
| Comparison | Fluentd | Fluent Bit |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation languages | C and Ruby (Fluent Bit project manual) | C (Fluent Bit project manual) |
| Memory figure in the official comparison table | “Greater than 60 MB” (Fluent Bit project manual; indicative, not a workload benchmark) | “Approximately 450 KB” (Fluent Bit project manual; indicative, not a workload benchmark) |
| Configuration format status | Not stated in the cited Fluent Bit documentation | YAML is standard as of v3.2; classic .conf files are planned for deprecation at the end of 2026 (Fluent Bit project documentation, 2026) |
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s 2025 migration guidance says Fluent Bit can process “anywhere from 10 to 40 times greater depending on the plugin” log volume with the same resources. Treat that as a broad, plugin-dependent claim—not a forecast for your deployment. Inputs, filters, outputs, compression, and retry behavior all affect the result; benchmark your own pipeline before setting a capacity target.

A separate Fluentd project FAQ gives a figure of 18,000 messages per second for a single process on a regular PC box. Its page metadata does not state a publication date, and the available figure is not a controlled comparison against Fluent Bit. Do not use it to calculate a migration gain.
Are Fluentd and Fluent Bit compatible?
They can coexist, but you should not expect Fluentd configuration files, plugins, or custom Ruby code to work unchanged in Fluent Bit. Treat each source, destination, transformation, authentication option, and buffer behavior as something to map and verify, rather than assuming a one-to-one replacement.

The Forward protocol supports a phased architecture in which Fluentd and Fluent Bit pass data between one another. That gives you the option to migrate selected agents or routes first instead of replacing every component at once. The Fluent Bit project and CNCF migration guidance describe both projects as usable as forwarders or aggregators.
Fluent Bit’s distributed-buffer model stores data once and lets multiple outputs subscribe. This can simplify fan-out routing compared with Fluentd patterns that copy records, but confirm that the new route delivers the required records to every destination.

Inventory the pipeline before changing production
Document the current topology and dependencies before translating configuration. Include agents, Kubernetes DaemonSets, aggregators, and every path records take from collection to destination. A useful inventory covers:
- Sources and destinations, including the specific plugins in use.
- Parsers, filters, transformations, record enrichment, and ordering assumptions.
- Buffering and retry settings, including what happens during destination outages and after an agent restart.
- Credentials, authorization, TLS, and any destination-specific formatting.
- Custom Ruby code, scripts, and plugin versions or image contents that affect behavior.
- Required telemetry signals and the delivery, latency, retry, drop, and destination-parity measures you will use to judge the migration.
This inventory is the compatibility checklist: it exposes unsupported plugins and behavior that would otherwise be easy to overlook during a configuration rewrite.

How to migrate in controlled stages
- Map one source and destination. Choose a representative route and identify the Fluent Bit input and output that could replace its Fluentd components. Verify the required authentication, authorization, TLS, output format, and retry semantics rather than matching plugin names alone.
- Translate the configuration deliberately. Rebuild the route in Fluent Bit’s configuration model and check its parsers, filters, buffering, and credentials individually. YAML is the standard format as of Fluent Bit v3.2; classic
.conffiles are planned for deprecation at the end of 2026, according to the project’s 2026 documentation. - Validate a single plugin, then a complete route. First confirm an individual component behaves as required. Then test an end-to-end path—for example, system logs to OpenSearch—before adding other routes. Compare records at the destination, not just whether the collector starts successfully.
- Replace custom processing with an explicit equivalent. Where suitable, evaluate Fluent Bit processors or Lua in place of custom Ruby. Check transformation semantics and performance for each change; matching the intended purpose does not guarantee identical record handling.
- Stage the rollout. Migrate a subset of agents, a partial workload, or a parallel path while the existing Fluentd route remains available. Decide in advance what delivery gaps, latency, retry growth, dropped records, or destination differences trigger a pause or rollback.
- Expand only after observing the staged route. Track the same measures through the rollout, including recovery after failures and destination outages, before increasing the migrated share.
What should you check for Linux, Windows, and Kubernetes?
Linux and Windows agents
CNCF migration guidance says Fluent Bit supports local collection, resuming after failures, last-line state, and local buffering for Linux or Windows agents. Confirm how those capabilities are configured in your deployment and test restart and recovery behavior with your own sources and destinations.
Kubernetes DaemonSets
Check which Fluentd plugins are actually bundled in the current image; an image’s contents may determine which dependencies your pipeline uses. Reproduce the Kubernetes metadata enrichment your downstream consumers rely on, and compare enriched records before widening the rollout. The DaemonSet itself is only one part of the migration: its image, configuration, permissions, and route behavior all need to remain fit for the workload.

Aggregators
If Fluentd handles aggregation, make a protocol-by-protocol checklist rather than assuming every listener or receiver has an equivalent in the new setup. The CNCF guidance identifies these Fluent Bit input capabilities to check as needed: syslog, TCP, HTTP, UDP, OpenTelemetry over HTTP or gRPC, Prometheus Remote Write, gzip, and Splunk HEC. Confirm the specific protocol, formatting, authentication, and retry requirements for each route you retain.
How can you tell whether the migration is working?
Fluent Bit exposes internal metrics through native HTTP endpoints in JSON and Prometheus formats. Use those metrics alongside destination-side checks to observe bytes, records, storage, connections, retries, and queue or buffer health during rollout. A healthy process is not sufficient evidence of parity: compare what arrives at each destination with what the old route delivered, and watch for delayed retries or drops as well as immediate errors.
Define rollback criteria before starting. Useful triggers include missing records, unexpected destination-format changes, growing queues or retries, unacceptable latency, or resource use that fails your own target. Keep the Fluentd path available until the staged Fluent Bit route has met those criteria under normal operation and relevant failure conditions.
Should you migrate, stay on Fluentd, or run both?
Choose based on the requirements that dominate your pipeline, not on a language or memory figure in isolation.
- Consider Fluent Bit when reducing agent footprint is a priority and the inputs, outputs, processing, and observability you need are supported with acceptable behavior.
- Keep Fluentd where it fits when critical plugins or custom Ruby processing lack a verified replacement, or when a rewrite would add unacceptable operational risk.
- Use both during transition when you want to migrate in stages. Forward protocol support allows Fluentd and Fluent Bit to coexist, so different parts of a pipeline do not have to change at the same time.
Fluent Bit’s OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, HTTP metrics, and multi-route capabilities can also support a modern telemetry pipeline. Evaluate the outputs and signals required by your OpenTelemetry-compatible backend or log aggregation platform as part of route validation; a collector migration does not by itself establish that the downstream system receives equivalent data.
