Micron also added three firmware features—High-Performance Mode, One Button Refresh and Zoned UFS—and announced capacities up to 1 TB with sequential speeds up to 4300 MB/s read and 4000 MB/s write. These are components for phone makers, not memory cards or routine user-replaceable upgrades.
What changed in Micron’s February 2024 UFS 4.0 update?
The headline change is the package footprint. In its February 27, 2024 announcement, Micron said the enhanced UFS 4.0 package measures 9 × 13 mm, compared with the 11 × 13 mm package used when Micron introduced its UFS 4.0 mobile solution in June 2023. The package is 2 mm narrower; its 13 mm dimension is unchanged. Micron called it the world’s most compact managed NAND package at the time, a company claim rather than an independently established market ranking.
A smaller package can give a phone designer more flexibility when arranging internal components, potentially leaving room for other design priorities. The announcement does not quantify how much extra space a phone gains or establish that a particular phone became thinner or received a larger battery because of this change.
Micron’s published specifications
Micron said its February 2024 solution was built on 232-layer 3D NAND and listed these capacities and peak sequential throughput figures:

The throughput numbers are Micron’s specifications, not a guarantee of the speed a phone user will see in every task. Real-world results depend on the device’s implementation and workload; the announcement’s figures should not be treated as independent benchmark measurements.
What the HPM, OBR and ZUFS features do
High-Performance Mode (HPM)
Micron says HPM prioritizes critical foreground tasks over background work during intensive smartphone use. The company claimed more than 25% improvement in speed when launching multiple apps. That percentage is Micron’s reported comparison, not an independently verified result or a promise for every phone using the storage.
One Button Refresh (OBR)
Micron describes OBR as automatically cleaning and optimizing data. It attributed 10% faster app launches to the feature in its announcement. The release does not make this a universal app-launch improvement across devices or usage conditions.

Zoned UFS (ZUFS)
With ZUFS, Micron says the host can specify zones for stored data. Organizing writes this way is intended to reduce write amplification—the extra internal writing associated with managing data. That may help storage management, but it does not establish a particular phone’s useful life or guarantee a specific performance improvement.
UFS 4.0 is embedded phone storage, not a memory card
UFS is managed storage integrated into a device. Micron’s module is aimed at phone manufacturers designing and assembling phones, rather than consumers looking for a removable card or a standard storage upgrade. In the phone context described here, it is not a microSD card and should not be assumed to be user-replaceable.
Micron’s product chronology matters: it introduced its UFS 4.0 mobile solution in June 2023, then announced the smaller package and additional firmware functionality in February 2024 while saying qualification samples were being delivered. Those dated announcements describe milestones at the time; they do not establish current availability for an individual buyer.

Where Micron UFS 4.0 appears in phones
In February 2025, Micron said its UFS 4.0 storage was in select Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 devices. “Select” is important: Micron did not identify the countries, storage capacities or retail configurations that contain its component. The announcement therefore does not support assuming every S25-series phone uses Micron storage.
Micron’s UFS portfolio has continued to develop; its product-family page also lists later products, including UFS 4.1 automotive storage. The smaller 9 × 13 mm package and the three named firmware features discussed here concern Micron’s mobile UFS 4.0 announcement, not a claim that UFS 4.0 is the newest offering across its current portfolio.

What the announcement does—and does not—show
The published figures and feature descriptions come from Micron. The company’s stated speed and app-launch improvements are useful indicators of what it designed the module to deliver, but they are not a substitute for independent, like-for-like testing. The available announcements also do not map Micron’s component to specific Galaxy S25 retail SKUs. Buyers choosing a phone should rely on the specifications for the exact device and market, rather than infer its storage supplier from the family name.
