To stream through MediaMTX on Ubuntu, set up two distinct publishing hops: first send a test stream to MediaMTX on your Ubuntu machine, then use a publisher or relay to send the video to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room. MediaMTX’s official guides document its RTMP publishing and YouTube’s ingest settings separately; they do not provide a single integrated forwarding recipe. That distinction matters: entering YouTube’s address in an arbitrary MediaMTX YAML field is not an established setup.
What MediaMTX does—and what it does not do here
MediaMTX is a self-hosted media server and proxy. Its official introduction describes it as “a ready-to-use and zero-dependency live media server and media proxy that allows to publish, read, proxy, record and playback real-time video and audio streams.” It supports RTMP and other protocols, but it is not a YouTube encoder preset. In this workflow, a client publishes media to MediaMTX; a separate upstream publisher or relay must carry that media onward to YouTube.
The steps below establish the Ubuntu installation and local publishing path, then explain how to configure YouTube’s destination in the program responsible for the second hop. The reviewed official documentation does not specify a complete MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding configuration, so the exact relay setup depends on the upstream software you choose.
Choose how to install MediaMTX
MediaMTX documents two relevant options: run a standalone executable or deploy it with Docker. The project recommends Docker for production environments, but the appropriate choice depends on your operating and deployment needs—not a published performance comparison. Follow the current MediaMTX installation guide and select the release bundle that matches your operating system and CPU architecture.

| Option | Fits best when | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone binary | You want a direct executable for a straightforward Ubuntu trial. | Download the matching Linux and architecture bundle, extract it, and run ./mediamtx from its directory. The official guide documents this approach. |
| Docker | You want a container-based deployment that can be repeated or managed as a container. | Use the official Docker procedure; MediaMTX recommends Docker for production environments. The guide does not give workload benchmarks comparing it with the standalone binary. |
The official documentation is rolling rather than tied to a fixed version. Use its current release link and architecture selection rather than copying a version-specific download command from an old tutorial. A command assuming linux_amd64 may not match an ARM Ubuntu machine.
Start MediaMTX and publish a local test stream
- Install and start the server. Use the standalone procedure or Docker instructions in the official installation guide. For the binary method, the documented launch command is
./mediamtx. - Configure a publishing client. The RTMP client guide uses
rtmp://localhost/mystreamas an example publishing address. This sends a stream to the MediaMTX instance running on the same machine, under the path/mystream. - In OBS, select the custom RTMP destination. The MediaMTX OBS guide uses the
Custom...service option, the RTMP server URL, and an empty stream-key field for the local path. Follow the guide’s current UI instructions if OBS labels change. - Alternatively, use FFmpeg. MediaMTX lists FFmpeg as an RTMP publishing client; use its current guide for the client-specific command and options. Do not assume the local RTMP URL is also YouTube’s destination.
At this point, OBS or FFmpeg is publishing to MediaMTX. YouTube is not receiving the stream merely because MediaMTX is running.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Open Stream settings. Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the Stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter those destination details in the encoder or relay that is actually publishing the second hop to YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
YouTube’s displayed default may be an ordinary RTMP URL. If you intend to use secure ingest, verify that the selected URL is RTMPS before configuring the upstream publisher. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and provides the current steps in its RTMPS Help page.
Understand the second hop before editing configuration
The local publishing example and the YouTube destination are separate connections. The official MediaMTX RTMP and OBS pages explain publishing into MediaMTX; YouTube’s instructions explain how an encoder connects to YouTube. The reviewed sources do not show a combined official recipe in which MediaMTX automatically forwards the local path to YouTube.

- 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
So identify which program will perform the onward publishing before entering credentials. If that program is an upstream publisher or relay, configure its input to receive the MediaMTX stream and its output to use the YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key. The exact controls and compatibility depend on that program’s documentation. Do not treat an arbitrary mediamtx.yml field as a forwarding feature without a matching MediaMTX configuration reference.
RTMPS is the secure transport choice when supported by the chosen publisher. MediaMTX’s OBS documentation also discusses RTMPS support for connections to the MediaMTX server when TLS is configured there; that is a server-listener concern, distinct from configuring YouTube’s remote ingest URL.

Validate configuration changes
MediaMTX can be configured using a file, environment variables, or the Control API. If you edit a YAML file, validate it with the documented command before relying on the change:
./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml
Replace the path with the location of your configuration file. The configuration guide covers supported configuration methods and validation. Validation checks the configuration file; it does not establish that an independently configured relay can reach YouTube.
Troubleshoot by identifying the failing hop
- OBS or FFmpeg cannot publish to MediaMTX: Confirm MediaMTX is running, the local publishing URL matches the configured client destination, and the path is the same (for example,
/mystream). Consult the current RTMP client guide for client-specific setup. - The local stream works but YouTube receives nothing: The local hop alone does not forward media. Check that a separate upstream publisher or relay is configured to read from MediaMTX and publish to YouTube.
- YouTube rejects the connection: Recheck the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from the correct Live Control Room stream. Ensure the selected address is RTMPS if secure ingest is intended, and verify that the upstream program supports the chosen protocol.
- MediaMTX fails to start after a YAML edit: Run
./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.ymlwith the actual file path and address any reported configuration problem using the current configuration documentation. - The installation bundle will not run: Check that you downloaded the current Linux release for the machine’s architecture rather than assuming an x86-64 bundle will work on ARM.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different route from operating a self-hosted MediaMTX server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream live camera video. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
