A custom Zoom pants filter is a third-party computer-vision project, not a setting built into Zoom. As described in 2022, it detects a person’s lower body, overlays digital pants—or blurs the image below the waist—and sends the altered video to Zoom through a virtual camera. The project’s current availability and installation requirements have not been established, so check its original code and dependencies before trying to set it up.
What the custom pants filter does
The project takes video from a webcam, uses MediaPipe Pose Detection to locate the person’s waist area, and uses OpenCV to process the image. Its reported modes are a pants-image overlay on the legs or blur below the waist. The processed frames are sent to a virtual camera using pyvirtualcam, which you can then select as the camera in Zoom. Hackster.io’s 2022 description explains the pipeline and handoff: Make Your Zoom Call Work-Friendly with a Custom Pants Filter.
Overlay or blur: what changes?
| Mode | Visual result | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Digital pants overlay | A pants image is composited over the detected legs. | Hackaday reports that the developer adjusted the overlay width. Check whether it stays aligned when you move; the reporting does not establish reliable coverage across different movements, lighting, or camera conditions. Hackaday’s May 12, 2022 report. |
| Below-waist blur | The image below the waist is blurred rather than covered with a pants image. | It avoids choosing and fitting a pants image, but the reporting does not establish how well the blur conceals the lower body in varied conditions. Hackaday’s May 12, 2022 report. |
Hackaday also describes support for video-file input, but that does not establish how well either mode performs during a live call.
How the video reaches Zoom
Zoom does not receive the filter as a native effect. Instead, the project processes a video feed and exposes the result as a virtual-camera source. In Zoom, choose that virtual camera in the application’s camera settings. The same virtual-camera approach is described for Microsoft Teams and Google Meet.
#1 Best Overall
- Don't leave your cat filter on when you start your video camera.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
pyvirtualcam sends frames to a virtual-camera device; the Python package does not create every required device by itself. Its documentation describes backend options including OBS virtual-camera support on Windows and macOS and v4l2loopback on Linux. Check the pyvirtualcam documentation for current operating-system and software compatibility before configuring a device.

What to check before trying it
- Find the original project code. The available reporting is from 2022 and does not establish whether the code is still available, maintained, or compatible with current dependencies.
- Confirm the virtual-camera setup for your system. pyvirtualcam requires an installed virtual-camera device, and the documented backend options vary by operating system.
- Test the result before a work call. Check framing and alignment while seated and moving. The reports describe the project’s features, not tested concealment or dependable performance in all conditions.
- Use a webcam input. Webcam video is the clearly described physical-camera input; no particular camera model is recommended or tested.
