For most Mac users, the Screenshot toolbar is the better first choice. Press Shift–Command–5 and you get the capture area, recording controls and options in one compact bar. Choose QuickTime Player when you want an app-based workflow and the finished movie to open immediately for playback, trimming or sharing.

On current macOS versions, QuickTime’s File > New Screen Recording command may open those same Screenshot controls. The practical difference is therefore usually how you start and handle the recording afterward, not a proven difference in picture or sound quality.

What the two Mac screen-recording options actually are

Apple documents both Screenshot and QuickTime Player as built-in ways to record the whole display or a selected portion of it. Neither requires a separate download or subscription. The names can suggest two independent recording engines, but modern macOS can blur that distinction: when QuickTime displays the Screenshot-style controls, Apple says the recording is being performed by Screenshot. QuickTime remains the entry point, while Screenshot supplies the capture interface.

Screenshot toolbar

Screenshot is a system capture panel rather than a traditional document window. Press Shift–Command–5 to reveal controls for still images and video. The video buttons let you record the entire screen or a selected portion. Apple’s current documentation also lists Record Selected Window on macOS Tahoe 26 or later. The toolbar’s Options menu can expose microphone selection, mouse-click indicators, a timer and the destination under Save to. Newer operating-system and hardware combinations add further choices, discussed below.

QuickTime Player

QuickTime is an application with a familiar player and basic movie-editing workflow. Open it and choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control–Command–N. Depending on your macOS version, QuickTime either opens the Screenshot controls or shows an older QuickTime Screen Recording window. In the former case, the capture behavior follows Screenshot; in the latter, you use QuickTime’s own recording window. After you stop, QuickTime automatically opens the movie so you can play it, edit it or share it.

Question Screenshot toolbar QuickTime Player
Fastest launch Shift–Command–5 opens the controls directly. Open QuickTime first, then use File > New Screen Recording or Control–Command–N.
Capture choices Entire screen or selected portion; Record Selected Window is listed for macOS Tahoe 26 or later. Entire screen or a dragged selection. If QuickTime hands off to Screenshot, its choices and version limits apply.
Microphone Select a microphone from the toolbar’s options when available. Select a microphone in the recording window; the older flow also provides monitoring-volume control.
System audio Include System Audio is documented for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, subject to supported hardware. No separate, universally available system-audio control is established in the older QuickTime flow; when the Screenshot controls appear, use their version-dependent options.
Mouse clicks Enable Show Mouse Clicks in Options. Enable Show Mouse Clicks in Recording in the QuickTime recording window.
Timer Available from the toolbar’s Options menu. Not listed as a distinct control in the older QuickTime recording window.
What happens when you stop The movie is saved to the selected Save to location; a floating thumbnail can be opened for the next step. QuickTime automatically opens the recording for playback, basic editing or sharing.
Built-in editing Primarily a capture interface; continue in QuickTime or iMovie for editing. Trim, rearrange, rotate and split a movie into clips.
Protected apps Some applications, including Apple TV, may block window recording. The same restriction can apply because the app is trying to capture a protected window.

How to record your Mac with the Screenshot toolbar

1. Open the control bar

  1. Press Shift–Command–5.
  2. Choose the video icon for Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s list also includes Record Selected Window.
  3. For a selected portion, drag the frame around the area you want. Reposition or resize it before recording; anything outside the frame is excluded.

2. Set options before you start

Open Options and set the controls that apply to your recording:

  • Microphone: choose the input that should carry your narration. If no microphone is selected, the movie may contain no voice track.
  • Show Mouse Clicks: turn this on when viewers need to see where you click. It adds a visual indicator to pointer clicks rather than changing the captured screen itself.
  • Timer: use the available timer when you need time to arrange windows or begin speaking before capture starts.
  • Save to: select the destination where the automatic movie file should be written. Check this setting before recording if you are working on a drive with limited free space or need a project-specific folder.
  • Include System Audio: Apple lists this option for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, with hardware support required. If the command is absent, your operating-system version or Mac model does not meet that documented combination.
  • Format: Apple lists SDR/HDR choices on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. The choices shown on your Mac depend on that support.

3. Start and stop

  1. Click Record. For a full-screen capture, select the display if macOS asks which screen to use. For a selected portion, recording begins within the frame you set.
  2. Use the menu-bar stop control when you are finished, or press Command–Control–Escape.
  3. Wait for the file to finish writing. With automatic saving, the filename normally follows the pattern Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov.
  4. Use the floating thumbnail that appears after capture if you want to open the movie immediately. Otherwise, go to the destination selected in Save to.

How to record one window

The one-window workflow depends on your macOS release. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists Record Selected Window in Screenshot. Choose it, then click the target window. On earlier releases, that button may not exist; use Record Selected Portion and draw a frame around the window instead. A manually drawn frame can include nearby pixels if the window moves, so pause other activity and keep the target in a fixed position.

How to record with QuickTime Player

1. Open a new screen recording

  1. Launch QuickTime Player.
  2. Choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control–Command–N.
  3. Identify which interface appears. If you see the Screenshot-style toolbar, Screenshot is performing the capture. If you see the older QuickTime Screen Recording window, continue with its controls.

2. Configure the QuickTime recording window

In the older QuickTime flow, select the microphone you want to record and adjust monitoring volume. You can also enable Show Mouse Clicks in Recording. Apple recommends lowering the monitoring volume or using headphones with a microphone when feedback occurs. Monitoring speakers and a live microphone in the same room can create a loop that makes the narration unusable.

3. Choose the capture area and begin

  1. Click the screen to record the entire screen, or drag an area for a partial recording.
  2. Choose Start Recording.
  3. Stop from the menu bar when you are done. The exact stop control depends on whether QuickTime opened the Screenshot interface or its older recording window.
  4. QuickTime opens the completed movie automatically. Play it back before closing the document so you can confirm that the intended screen area and microphone were captured.

When QuickTime opens Screenshot controls, the available timer, save destination, selected-window support, system-audio option and SDR/HDR choices are governed by the macOS version and hardware requirements described for Screenshot. QuickTime’s role in that situation is primarily to launch the capture and receive the resulting movie.

Microphone, system audio and feedback

Microphone narration

Both entry points can record a microphone, but the control is presented differently. Screenshot exposes microphone selection from its toolbar options. The older QuickTime window exposes a microphone menu and monitoring volume. Select the input before pressing Record; changing the Mac’s input afterward does not reliably repair a movie that was already captured without a voice track.

System sounds

Do not assume that selecting a microphone records application audio. Apple’s documented Include System Audio option belongs to Screenshot on macOS 27 Golden Gate or later and requires supported hardware. On a Mac that does not show that option, the built-in workflow may capture your voice while omitting alert sounds, music or application playback. The QuickTime window’s microphone selector is not evidence that system audio is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing echo

  • Use headphones with a microphone when monitoring live sound.
  • Lower the monitoring volume if you hear the Mac’s output feeding back into the microphone.
  • Make a short test recording when narration quality matters, especially after switching input devices.
  • Keep the microphone away from the Mac’s speakers and avoid monitoring through open speakers.

What you can do after recording

Screenshot’s handoff

Screenshot is designed chiefly to capture. Its floating thumbnail gives you a quick way to open the result, and the saved movie can be opened in QuickTime Player or iMovie for further work. The toolbar itself is not a full video editor; it does not provide a timeline for arranging a multi-scene project.

QuickTime’s basic movie edits

QuickTime Player’s user guide lists four common operations: trim unwanted material from the beginning or end, rearrange clips, rotate a movie and split it into multiple clips. These tools are useful for removing a long pause, changing orientation or cutting a recording into sections. They are basic edits, not the layered timeline, effects and audio-mixing features of a nonlinear editor.

If your only requirement is to verify a capture and remove its dead time, QuickTime’s automatic opening is convenient. If you need titles, transitions, multiple tracks or detailed sound cleanup, plan to move the movie to a fuller editor such as iMovie rather than expecting either built-in recorder to provide those functions.

Which recorder fits common situations?

Your situation Better starting point Reason
A one-off demonstration or bug report Screenshot The keyboard shortcut reveals recording controls without opening another application.
You need a countdown while arranging windows Screenshot Its Options menu includes a timer.
You want to select a window by clicking it Screenshot on Tahoe 26 or later Record Selected Window is documented there; older systems require a manually drawn region.
You want the movie open for immediate playback and trimming QuickTime Player QuickTime automatically opens the recording when you stop.
You need to split or rotate the finished movie QuickTime Player Those basic movie edits are part of QuickTime’s documented workflow.
You need system audio Screenshot controls on macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, if supported That is where Apple documents Include System Audio; availability is version- and hardware-dependent.
You need an on-screen click indicator Either Screenshot calls it Show Mouse Clicks; the older QuickTime window calls it Show Mouse Clicks in Recording.
You are recording a protected streaming-video app Neither is guaranteed Apple warns that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded.

Troubleshooting common failures

The keyboard shortcut does nothing

Open Screenshot from the Mac’s application interface instead of relying on the shortcut, then verify that the toolbar appears. If you prefer an application workflow, open QuickTime and use File > New Screen Recording. The two launch paths provide an alternative when a keyboard shortcut is unavailable or intercepted by another utility.

I cannot find Record Selected Window

Apple lists that control for macOS Tahoe 26 or later. On an earlier release, use Record Selected Portion and draw a frame around the window. Updating macOS may add the control, but the Mac must meet Apple’s compatibility requirements for that release.

The recording has no voice

Reopen the recording controls and explicitly choose a microphone. In QuickTime’s older window, confirm the microphone menu and make a short test clip. A microphone selection is separate from system-audio capture, so choosing an input will not by itself record application sounds.

There is echo or harsh feedback

Lower monitoring volume and use headphones with a microphone, as Apple recommends. Move the microphone away from speakers and test again before making the full recording.

Application audio is missing

Check whether Include System Audio is present. Apple documents it only for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later on supported hardware. If your Mac does not offer the setting, the built-in recorder may be limited to the microphone track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The movie is not where I expected

In Screenshot, inspect Options > Save to before recording; that menu determines the automatic destination. The generated filename normally begins Screen Recording and includes the date and time. In QuickTime, the completed movie opens in the player first, so use the player’s save command to place a durable copy in your project folder before closing it.

The captured window is black or refuses to record

Some applications restrict recording. Apple specifically warns that apps such as Apple TV may not allow their windows to be recorded. This is an application protection policy, not evidence that Screenshot or QuickTime is malfunctioning. Try recording a permitted test window to distinguish a protected app from a general capture problem.

Bottom line

Use Screenshot as the default Mac recorder: it is the quickest route to a full-screen or area capture and puts the important options in one place. Use QuickTime Player when opening an app first makes sense because you want the movie ready for playback, trimming, splitting or sharing as soon as recording stops. On a recent macOS release, both may lead to the same Screenshot capture controls, so choose based on the workflow you want rather than expecting a separate quality advantage.
