Use iPhone Handoff if you want the same number available on two iPhones and expect to alternate between them. Use eSIM Quick Transfer when you are replacing or permanently upgrading to one new iPhone. Handoff keeps both phones enrolled and makes the iPhone you unlock the active one. Quick Transfer moves the cellular line to the new phone and disables it on the old phone.

iPhone Handoff and eSIM Quick Transfer solve different problems

The two features can sound interchangeable because both involve one phone number and two iPhones. They are not interchangeable. Handoff is a shared-use arrangement: two eligible iPhones remain associated with one number, while only the device you are currently using is active on the cellular network. eSIM Quick Transfer is a migration: the line leaves the previous iPhone and is activated on the new one.

Question iPhone Handoff eSIM Quick Transfer
Primary purpose Use one number on two iPhones and switch between them Move a number from an old iPhone to a replacement or primary new iPhone
What happens to the old iPhone? It remains enrolled and can become active again when unlocked The number stops working on it after transfer completes
How switching works Unlock the iPhone you want to use Complete a one-time transfer, then use the new iPhone
Cellular status Only one of the two iPhones is cellular-active at a time The new iPhone becomes the active device
Main constraint Both phones, the Apple Account, iCloud messaging, Wi-Fi and the carrier must meet Handoff requirements The carrier must support eSIM Quick Transfer

If you alternate between a compact phone and a larger phone, keep a work and personal handset in rotation, or want a spare that can become primary without reissuing a line, Handoff is the relevant option. If you bought a new iPhone and are finished with the old one, Quick Transfer is the cleaner choice.

How iPhone Handoff works

One number, two enrolled iPhones

Apple describes iPhone Handoff as using one phone number between two devices so you can switch whenever you want. The service links the two iPhones through your Apple Account, iCloud messaging, FaceTime, iMessage and a participating carrier eSIM. Both phones are configured for the same line, but the cellular network treats only one as active at any moment.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Unlocking selects the active phone

There is no separate button to press each time you change devices. When you unlock the other enrolled iPhone, activity moves to it automatically. Calls, voicemail, messages and the services tied to the active phone follow that selection. If you pick up the first iPhone later and unlock it, it can become active again.

What follows the active device

Apple says calls, voicemail, iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS, Find My location and iCloud-synced data follow the iPhone that is currently active. This means people continue to contact the same number while the active handset changes. Your location shown through Find My also reflects the active iPhone, so remember that the phone left at home may no longer be the location device once you switch.

What Handoff does not mean

Handoff is not two simultaneous cellular connections. You cannot expect both iPhones to ring independently on the mobile network or to place calls at the same time through one line. The design is rapid alternation, not parallel cellular service. Each phone also needs to remain signed in and connected as required; removing an account, disabling iCloud Messages or losing the carrier relationship can prevent switching.

Handoff requirements and carrier availability

Apple’s current support requirements call for all of the following:

  • Two iPhones running iOS 27 or later.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • The same Apple Account signed in on both phones.
  • Messages in iCloud enabled.
  • FaceTime and iMessage signed in with that Apple Account.
  • An eSIM from a participating carrier.

Apple currently lists T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany for Handoff. That list is carrier- and country-specific, not a guarantee that every plan from those providers qualifies. Carrier fees may apply. Before enrolling, check your carrier’s current support information and ask whether your exact plan and region allow Handoff.

Why the software and account conditions matter

Handoff depends on coordinated identity and message synchronization, not only on the SIM profile. If one iPhone is on an earlier iOS release, signed in to a different Apple Account or missing Messages in iCloud, the setup prompts may not appear or the phones may not switch reliably. Update both devices, then verify account and messaging settings before troubleshooting the carrier.

Check the line before changing anything

Confirm that the line is already an eSIM and that the carrier supports the feature. A physical SIM, an unsupported carrier, a business account with restrictions or an account that requires a special activation process may not qualify. Ask about enrollment charges, recurring fees and whether removing Handoff later requires a carrier-side change.

How to set up iPhone Handoff

Prepare both iPhones

  1. Back up important data and install the latest available iOS update on both phones. Handoff requires iOS 27 or later on each device.
  2. Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi and keep them close together during setup.
  3. Sign in to the same Apple Account on each iPhone.
  4. In Settings, verify that Messages in iCloud is enabled. Confirm that iMessage and FaceTime use the same Apple Account.
  5. Make sure the carrier eSIM is eligible and that you understand any carrier fee or account limitation before accepting enrollment.

Enroll the number on both devices

  1. On the iPhone that already has the line, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  2. Choose Use Number on This iPhone and Another.
  3. Keep the second iPhone nearby and follow the on-screen prompts on both devices.
  4. Approve the enrollment when asked. Read the carrier confirmation carefully; do not accept a prompt that describes a permanent line transfer if your intention is to keep Handoff.
  5. Complete a test call, send an iMessage and send an SMS or RCS message. Unlock the other iPhone and confirm that it becomes the active handset.

Switch during normal use

To move activity, unlock the enrolled iPhone you want to carry. Allow a moment for cellular registration, then place a test call if the change is critical. Because only one phone is active, a call or data session on the first device can end or change state when the second device takes over. Keep both phones charged and connected to Wi-Fi if you need dependable switching.

Handoff limitations to plan for

Apple Watch pairing does not automatically follow

Handoff does not automatically switch an Apple Watch pairing between the two iPhones. If your watch is paired to one phone, changing which iPhone is active does not create a second pairing or move the watch configuration for you. Decide which iPhone should remain the watch’s management device before adopting Handoff as a daily routine.

Some carrier controls stay with the main iPhone

Apple notes that carrier services can be limited to the main iPhone. Examples include Call Forwarding, Caller ID and carrier account management. A successful Handoff enrollment therefore does not guarantee that every carrier setting or account control appears identically on both devices.

Location and message expectations

Find My location follows the active iPhone, while iCloud-synced data and messages follow the account and active-device arrangement. If another person has access to the second handset, review your Apple Account security, notification previews and Find My settings before enrolling it.

How eSIM Quick Transfer works

A one-time move to a new iPhone

Quick Transfer is designed for a previous iPhone and a new iPhone. It moves the phone number’s eSIM profile to the new device through a supported carrier workflow. Once activation finishes, the previous iPhone is no longer the cellular device for that number.

Transfer steps

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the previous iPhone. Keep both powered and connected as instructed by the setup screens.
  2. On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  3. Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone, or select the listed phone number if that is the option shown.
  4. Confirm the request on the previous iPhone. Complete any identity, passcode or carrier verification prompts.
  5. Wait for activation to finish before erasing, selling or trading in the previous iPhone.
  6. Place a call and test cellular data on the new iPhone. If the old phone displays no service afterward, that is the expected result of a completed transfer.

What happens to the previous iPhone

Apple states that the phone number stops working on the previous iPhone after it is transferred to the new one. The old device can still connect to Wi-Fi, use apps, store downloaded content and access services that do not require that cellular line. It simply no longer provides cellular calling, texting or mobile data for the transferred number.

When Quick Transfer is the better workflow

Choose it for a permanent upgrade, a damaged-phone replacement or a hand-me-down in which the line should belong to the recipient’s iPhone. It avoids maintaining two active enrollments and makes the intended primary device unambiguous.

Detailed comparison for common situations

Situation Better fit Reason
You alternate between two iPhones several times a day Handoff Unlocking the desired phone changes the active device without repeating a full line transfer.
You have bought a replacement and will retire the old phone Quick Transfer The line is deliberately moved, and the previous iPhone is deactivated for that number.
You need both phones to remain cellular-active simultaneously Neither feature as described Handoff activates only one iPhone, while Quick Transfer leaves the old phone without the transferred line.
Your carrier is not listed for Handoff Check Quick Transfer support Quick Transfer is generally the broader transfer workflow, but it still requires carrier support.
You rely heavily on carrier account controls from both phones Verify before choosing Handoff Apple says some controls may remain limited to the main iPhone.
You use an Apple Watch with one iPhone Plan around the paired phone Handoff does not automatically move the watch pairing.

Choosing Handoff for frequent alternation

Handoff is most useful when the two iPhones are both part of your ongoing routine. Examples include keeping a small phone for commuting and a larger phone for desk work, maintaining a primary and backup handset, or switching to a rugged device during outdoor work. The value is convenience: you do not have to perform a new eSIM activation every time you change phones.

Use a pre-switch checklist

  • Unlock the phone you intend to carry.
  • Wait for the cellular indicator to settle.
  • Check that the expected number appears in Cellular settings.
  • For important calls, make a brief test call before leaving Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Remember that Find My now reports the active iPhone’s location.

Do not choose Handoff solely because you want a second phone to receive calls at the same time. Its model is one active cellular device, not dual ringing.

Choosing Quick Transfer for a permanent move

Quick Transfer is less complicated when the old iPhone has no continuing role. It establishes the new phone as the line’s endpoint, then lets you erase or repurpose the previous device without leaving an active number behind.

Protect your data before transferring

  • Create a current iCloud or computer backup of the previous iPhone.
  • Confirm that photos, contacts, authenticator data and other essential content have synchronized or been backed up.
  • Keep the old iPhone available until calls and mobile data work on the new one.
  • Do not erase the old phone before activation is confirmed.
  • After testing, sign out and erase the old iPhone if you are giving it away or selling it.

If you actually need the old handset to remain usable on the same number, stop before accepting Quick Transfer and investigate Handoff eligibility instead. Completing Quick Transfer first will disable the number on the previous phone.

Troubleshooting iPhone Handoff

The Handoff option is missing

  • Check that both iPhones run iOS 27 or later.
  • Verify that both devices use the same Apple Account.
  • Turn on Messages in iCloud and confirm the Apple Account is selected for iMessage and FaceTime.
  • Connect both phones to Wi-Fi and place them nearby.
  • Ask the carrier whether the specific eSIM, plan and country support Handoff.

If all device settings are correct but the enrollment still does not appear, the carrier is the likely gating point. Apple’s listed support is limited by market, and a carrier may impose additional account rules or fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The second iPhone does not become active

Unlock it while both phones have Wi-Fi, then wait briefly for registration. Confirm that the first phone is not still being used for an active call or data session. Recheck account sign-in and iCloud Messages on both phones. If switching repeatedly fails, restart both devices and try again; persistent failure should be taken to the carrier because cellular activation is carrier-controlled.

Messages or voicemail seem inconsistent

Separate account synchronization from cellular activation. Verify iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS behavior with a test contact, then check voicemail by calling the number. If messages work over Wi-Fi but calls or SMS fail after switching, report the symptom to the carrier and mention that Handoff enrollment completed.

Troubleshooting eSIM Quick Transfer

The transfer option is not listed

Make sure the new and previous iPhones are close, powered on and running supported software. Confirm that the carrier supports Quick Transfer for your line. Some carriers require an additional verification step or direct assistance, so the absence of the option does not mean the iPhone hardware is defective.

The new phone has no service after transfer

  1. Wait several minutes for carrier activation to complete.
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode, then check the Cellular settings again.
  3. Restart the new iPhone.
  4. Confirm that the old iPhone’s loss of service is limited to the transferred number.
  5. Contact the carrier if the new phone still cannot call, text or use mobile data.

Do not repeatedly start new transfers or erase either phone while activation is unresolved. Keep the previous iPhone available so the carrier can verify the account and recover the line if needed.

The old phone still appears connected

Wi-Fi connectivity can make the previous iPhone look usable after transfer. Test the transferred number with cellular Wi-Fi disabled. The expected end state is that the old phone no longer works for that number on the mobile network, while the new iPhone does.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Ask whether both iPhones must remain part of your regular phone setup. If yes, investigate Handoff; if no, use Quick Transfer.
  2. Decide whether you need rapid alternation or a one-time migration. Rapid alternation points to Handoff; migration points to Quick Transfer.
  3. Check your carrier and country before changing the eSIM. Handoff has a narrower published availability list, and both features depend on carrier support.
  4. Check the Apple Watch arrangement and any carrier controls you use, because Handoff does not automatically move watch pairing and some controls may stay on the main iPhone.
  5. Back up the previous phone before any transfer and test calling, messaging and data afterward.

The decisive distinction is service ownership: Handoff keeps the number available across two enrolled iPhones with one active at a time, while Quick Transfer assigns it to the new iPhone and ends cellular service for that number on the old one.
