Neither Hulu nor Netflix is the best choice for everyone. Netflix is a straightforward fit if you want on-demand shows, movies and games with a choice of ad-supported or ad-free plans. Hulu is worth considering if you want current-season episodes, or if you may bundle its library with Disney+ and ESPN+ or add live TV. The deciding factors are the specific titles you watch, your tolerance for ads, your budget and whether live channels matter.

This comparison covers US plans and offers listed on official service pages accessed October 4, 2026. Prices, catalogs, channel lineups and account rules can change; check the services’ current pages before subscribing.

Start with the shows and movies you actually want

A service’s broad catalog description cannot tell you whether it has the series, film or game you want. Rights change, and neither service’s general plan page establishes that its catalog is better overall. Search both services for your must-watch titles before paying, especially if you are subscribing for one particular show.

When Hulu’s release timing may matter

Hulu promotes current-season shows that are often available the day after broadcast, subject to the conditions on its Hulu + Live TV page. It also offers full seasons, Hulu Originals, movies and kids’ shows. Availability and timing depend on the title and its rights.

When Netflix’s library may matter

Netflix describes its US plans as including movies, TV shows and games. Its plan listing does not establish how many titles it has compared with Hulu or which service has the better selection for a particular viewer. Check availability for the titles you care about on each service.

Compare the monthly cost you would actually pay

Netflix’s US Help Center listed three monthly plans on October 4, 2026. Hulu’s listed prices below are for a Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle, not for Hulu alone, so the figures are not direct equivalents.

Option Listed price What the price covers
Netflix Standard with ads $8.99/month Netflix plan with ads
Netflix Standard $19.99/month Netflix plan without ads
Netflix Premium $26.99/month Netflix plan without ads
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle with Hulu (With Ads) $21.99/month Three-service bundle
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle with Hulu (No Ads) $32.99/month Three-service bundle; Hulu’s library option is labeled No Ads

Netflix prices are from its US Plans and Pricing Help Center page; bundle prices are from Hulu’s official welcome page. Hulu says bundle savings are compared with buying the services separately at their current regular prices. A bundle may make sense if your household would use Disney+ and ESPN+ anyway; if you only want Hulu, compare the standalone offer shown in your region rather than treating the bundle price as Hulu’s single-service cost.

Hulu + Live TV is a separate, higher-cost option

Hulu listed its ad-supported Live TV plan at a regular price of $99.99/month. Its official page displayed a limited offer of $49.99 for one month, then renewal at the regular or then-current monthly price; the offer was shown as ending October 26, 2026, subject to eligibility and terms. Because promotions expire and may change, confirm the amount and renewal date at checkout. The plan includes 100+ live channels, Disney+ and ESPN Select access, with location-based availability and sports blackouts. See Hulu’s Hulu + Live TV page for current terms.

Understand what “ad-free” does and does not mean

Netflix’s US listing offers an ad-supported plan and two plans without ads. Netflix says some titles may be unavailable on the ad-supported plan. Hulu distinguishes an ad-supported plan from a no-ads option for its streaming library, but a few shows may still have short ad breaks before and after episodes because of streaming rights.

Hulu + Live TV is different from an ad-free on-demand library: live channels have ad breaks, and Hulu says its Live TV premium option removes ads only from the Hulu streaming library—not from live or video-on-demand content available through Live TV. Check the precise plan terms if avoiding ads is essential.

Check screens, household rules and sharing before you subscribe

Netflix lists two devices streaming at once on Standard with ads and Standard, and four on Premium. Its Help Center says a Netflix account cannot be shared outside the household, which it defines around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Eligible plans may add paid extra members. See Netflix’s plan details and its household and sharing information for the rules that apply to your account.

Hulu’s Live TV page says its streaming library can play on two screens at once. An Unlimited Screens add-on allows unlimited screens at home and three on the go, subject to restrictions for premium networks. Hulu also says an eligible Hulu or bundle subscription may add one person outside the household, but that option is unavailable with Hulu + Live TV and has age, region and existing-subscription conditions. Confirm eligibility in Hulu’s Extra Member help article.

Compare offline downloads for travel

Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices at a time for Standard with ads and Standard, and six for Premium. These are download-device limits, not simultaneous-stream limits. Hulu says subscribers can download select titles to supported devices, but its cited plan information does not give a directly comparable tier-by-tier device count. For either service, verify that the titles you want are downloadable and that your device is supported before relying on offline viewing.

Choose Hulu + Live TV if live channels and DVR are the point

Hulu + Live TV is the more direct match if you want live channels, local news or sports and DVR in one service. Hulu advertises 100+ live channels and unlimited DVR; recordings can be stored for up to nine months and fast-forwarded. The unlimited DVR statement does not apply to on-demand shows. Channel availability varies by location, and sports blackouts and rights restrictions apply. Check the local lineup and the rights for the games you want before subscribing.

Netflix’s US plan comparison describes on-demand entertainment and games, not a comparable live-channel package. If live TV is not a requirement, compare Netflix and Hulu’s on-demand options and prices instead of paying for Hulu + Live TV solely because it has a larger-sounding channel count.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. List your must-watch titles. Search for each show, movie or game on both services; do not infer availability from a general catalog description.
  2. Decide whether live TV is essential. If you need channels and DVR, check Hulu + Live TV’s local channel lineup and sports restrictions. Otherwise, compare on-demand plans.
  3. Calculate your real monthly cost. Compare the plan you would actually use, and count Hulu’s Disney+ and ESPN+ bundle value only if your household wants those services too.
  4. Set your ad preference. Check whether you can accept ads, including rights-related breaks and live-channel advertising, before choosing a plan labeled ad-free.
  5. Check household and travel needs. Match simultaneous screens and sharing rules to your household, and verify download availability for the titles and devices you use.
