First identify your iPad mini: the mini (5th generation) works with Apple Pencil (1st generation); the mini (6th generation) works with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or Apple Pencil (USB-C); and the mini (A17 Pro) works with Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C). These Pencil models are not interchangeable across those iPad mini generations.
Which Apple Pencil works with each iPad mini?

Use Apple’s compatibility chart to check the exact model before buying. Apple specifies iPadOS 17.5 or later for Apple Pencil Pro and iPadOS 17.1.1 or later for Apple Pencil (USB-C). The compatibility listing cited here does not state an iPadOS minimum for Apple Pencil (2nd generation).
How to pair and charge Apple Pencil with iPad mini
iPad mini (5th generation): Apple Pencil (1st generation)
- Remove the cap from Apple Pencil.
- Plug the Pencil into the iPad mini’s Lightning connector.
- When the Pair button appears on the screen, tap it.
The Pencil charges while plugged into the iPad. Apple says it remains paired until the iPad restarts, Bluetooth is turned off, or the Pencil is paired with another iPad. Follow Apple’s first-generation setup instructions.
iPad mini (6th generation): Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
- Turn on Bluetooth in Settings.
- Attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector on the right side of the iPad mini.
Attaching it pairs and charges the Pencil. Apple’s second-generation pairing guide describes this magnetic connection.

iPad mini (6th generation) or iPad mini (A17 Pro): Apple Pencil (USB-C)
- Slide open the end of the Pencil.
- Connect a USB-C charge cable to the Pencil and to the iPad mini’s USB-C port.
- Tap “Tap to Connect” when it appears.
The Pencil charges while connected to the iPad. Apple also describes charging it with the cable and a power adapter. After pairing, you can disconnect it from the cable; it stays paired until the iPad restarts, Bluetooth is turned off, or the Pencil is paired with another iPad. See Apple’s USB-C setup guide.
iPad mini (A17 Pro): Apple Pencil Pro
Center Apple Pencil Pro on the iPad’s magnetic connector when connecting. Apple’s cited guidance confirms compatibility and provides this connection troubleshooting advice, but does not provide a dedicated setup sequence here. If the Pencil will not pair, try removing the case or cover. Refer to Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.

How to check Apple Pencil battery level
Check the Batteries widget or open Settings > Apple Pencil. Apple gives these battery-check options in its setup guidance for the compatible Pencil models.

- Update iPadOS.
- Confirm the Pencil is compatible with your iPad mini and has charge.
- Connect it using its model-specific method described above, and check that Bluetooth is on.
- Restart the iPad while the Pencil remains connected.
- If the Pencil appears under Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices, tap it and choose Forget This Device, then reconnect it.
- Wait for the Pencil to charge and for the Pair prompt to appear.
For Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the case or cover and try again if pairing still fails. If the Pair prompt does not appear, Apple says service may be needed. See Apple’s pairing troubleshooting steps.
