The most dependable way to capture an Android TV or Google TV screen is Android Debug Bridge (ADB). Enable ADB on the television, connect it to a computer, open the screen you want, and run adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png. The PNG is written directly to your computer. If direct streaming is inconvenient, save the image on the TV and copy it with adb pull.
Android TV menus and wireless-debugging availability differ by manufacturer and software build, so a universal remote-button shortcut cannot be assumed. The procedures below separate repeatable developer workflows from device-specific options.
What you need before taking an Android TV screenshot
- An Android TV or Google TV device with developer/ADB settings exposed by its software build.
- A computer with the Android Debug Bridge (
adb) command available. - A connection between the computer and TV. Wireless debugging is documented for TV devices running Android 13 (API level 33) or higher, but menu names and availability vary by manufacturer and build.
- Permission to approve the computer’s authorization prompt on the TV when it appears.
If your television does not offer wireless debugging, you may need a device-specific wired or local ADB setup. There is no single connection method that works on every Android TV model.
Method 1: Capture directly to your computer with ADB
ADB’s screencap shell utility captures the device display. The exec-out form streams the PNG without first creating a file on the TV.

- On the TV, open the developer settings provided by that device’s build. Enable ADB or debugging, then note the TV’s network address if you are using wireless debugging.
- On the computer, connect to the TV with ADB. For a network connection, the command is typically
adb connect TV_IP_ADDRESS:PORT. Use the address and port shown by your TV; do not assume every model uses the same port. - When the authorization dialog appears on the TV, approve the computer. You can verify the connection with
adb devices; the TV should be listed as an authorized device. - Navigate to the exact screen you want to capture.
- Run:
adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png- Open
screen.pngon the computer. Rename or share it as needed.
This produces a PNG at the computer’s current working directory. If a file with that name already exists, your shell may overwrite it, so choose a new filename when preserving earlier captures.
Capture a series of screens
Use a different output name for each state, for example:
adb exec-out screencap -p > settings-home.png
adb exec-out screencap -p > settings-network.pngFor repeatable support documentation, keep the TV at a known resolution and record the device model, Android TV/Google TV version, and capture date alongside the images.
Method 2: Save the screenshot on the TV, then pull it
The file-based workflow is useful when direct output redirection behaves unexpectedly in your shell or when you want an intermediate file on the device.

- Connect and authorize the TV as described above.
- Open the target screen.
- Save a PNG to shared storage:
adb shell screencap /sdcard/screen.png- Copy it to the computer:
adb pull /sdcard/screen.png- Open the copied
screen.png. If you need another capture, overwrite the device file or use a distinct path such as/sdcard/network.png.
The destination shown by adb pull is your current computer directory unless you provide a different local path, such as adb pull /sdcard/screen.png ./captures/network.png.
Using the Google TV phone remote
The Google TV app can act as a phone or tablet remote. Pair it by opening the app, tapping Remote, choosing the TV, and completing the prompts. The phone and TV generally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for Wi-Fi pairing.
This is a navigation aid: it lets you reach the screen you want without the physical remote, but the cited Google TV help does not make the phone app a screenshot exporter. To obtain an image file, use ADB or another capture method after navigating.
Can you press Power plus Volume Down?
Google’s generic Android screenshot instructions describe Power plus Volume Down, and in some phone interfaces a power-menu Screenshot option. Those instructions are written for Android phones, not as a universal Android TV rule. Android TV remotes have different buttons and layouts, and manufacturers can change their software.

If your particular model documents a screenshot shortcut or menu, it may be convenient, but verify the behavior on that model. Do not treat the phone combination as a guaranteed TV feature.
Alternative capture methods when ADB is unavailable
Built-in manufacturer capture
Some televisions expose a screenshot item in a developer menu, power menu, or custom utility. Availability, file location, and output format are device-specific. Consult the manual or on-screen help for the exact model and software build.
External HDMI capture
An HDMI capture device can record the television’s output when software capture is blocked. Compatibility depends on the TV’s HDMI path, the source device, the capture hardware, and copy-protection behavior such as HDCP. Verify compatibility before purchasing; an HDMI port does not guarantee that a capture card can receive the content.
Photographing the screen
A camera is a last-resort record, not a pixel-accurate screenshot. Reflections, refresh lines, perspective, and room lighting reduce quality, but it can document a setup when ADB and HDMI capture are unavailable.

Troubleshooting ADB screenshots
adb is not recognized
Install Android platform tools, then open a new terminal or add the platform-tools directory to your PATH. Run adb version to confirm the command is available.
adb devices shows nothing
Confirm that debugging is enabled, the computer and TV are reachable, and the address and port are correct. For wireless connections, check that both devices are on the intended network. If the TV offers a pairing workflow, complete pairing before running adb connect.
The device is listed as unauthorized
Look at the TV for the RSA authorization prompt and approve it. If no prompt appears, disconnect and reconnect, then run adb kill-server followed by adb start-server and try again.
adb connect fails or times out
Check the TV’s current IP address, wireless-debugging state, firewall rules, and network isolation. Guest Wi-Fi and some enterprise networks block device-to-device traffic. A wired or local, device-specific ADB setup may be required.

The output is empty, corrupt, or not a PNG
Use the exact command adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png, not a generic shell pipeline that can alter line endings. Try the save-and-pull workflow to isolate shell-redirection problems. Confirm that the target display is fully rendered before capturing.
The image is black or missing protected video
Some apps and video paths restrict screenshots or use protected content. ADB cannot override those restrictions. An external HDMI method may also be blocked by HDCP; verify the source and capture hardware rather than assuming a configuration error.
The screen changes before capture
Navigate first, wait for animations and network content to finish, then run the command. For automated documentation, use a deterministic test state and take several captures to identify transient loading screens.

Security and reliability notes
- ADB authorization gives the connected computer device access, so approve only computers you trust and disable debugging when it is no longer needed.
- Network ADB depends on the TV’s current address and local network policy; a DHCP change can invalidate a saved command.
- PNG preserves the captured pixels but can be large. Convert a copy to JPEG or WebP only when the receiving system permits lossy or alternate formats.
- For support evidence, retain the original PNG and note the TV model, software version, connection method, and exact command.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the ADB screenshot saved?
With adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png, it is saved in the computer terminal’s current directory. With the save-and-pull method, adb pull copies the file to the local destination you specify.
Does the Google TV app export screenshots?
The app documents phone/tablet remote pairing and navigation. It does not, by that documentation, export a screenshot file.
Will ADB capture DRM video?
Not reliably. Protected apps or video paths can produce a black or restricted image, and ADB does not bypass those protections.
