Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo stream 4K at 60 fps from a VPS, the server must do two things continuously: encode or relay a 3840×2160, 60 fps feed in real time, and sustain enough outbound bandwidth to deliver it. Configure the encoder for a YouTube-supported codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; use RTMPS for a typical live event. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1 at 4K60, but those figures do not guarantee that a VPS can encode or carry the stream reliably.
What you need before configuring the stream
A VPS is not automatically capable of 4K60 just because its network plan advertises a high connection speed. The required capacity depends on whether it receives an already-encoded video or must encode the source itself, as well as the codec, encoder preset, filters, and network route to YouTube. YouTube does not publish a universal CPU, GPU, or RAM specification for VPS-based 4K60 streaming.
- A suitable source: Identify its resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether it is already encoded. Resizing or encoding raw video is a different workload from relaying an encoded stream.
- An encoder and VPS that pass a real-time test: Confirm the exact encoder build, hardware-acceleration support if needed, and performance with your actual content and settings.
- Sustained outbound capacity: Check the VPS provider’s sustained egress, transfer allowance, and route to YouTube. Leave room above the video bitrate for audio and network variation.
- YouTube Live access and a private test window: Have access to the relevant stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room and test before the public event.
- A protected stream key: Treat the key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
Choose a codec and bitrate for 4K60
YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations list different 4K/2160p60 bitrates by codec. These are recommendations for the outgoing media stream, not a VPS plan specification or a guarantee of picture quality under every source and network condition.
| Codec | YouTube’s listed minimum for 4K60 | YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 4K60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| HEVC/H.265 or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
For a straightforward RTMPS workflow, choose a codec supported by both your encoder and the selected YouTube ingest method. Set CBR and budget outbound capacity above the chosen video bitrate to accommodate audio and variability. Verify that the VPS can sustain the required egress rather than relying on a brief peak-speed figure. YouTube’s current encoder settings are documented in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set the frame rate, keyframes, audio, and color
Video format and keyframes
Use 3840×2160 progressive video at 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, a two-second interval is a 120-frame GOP when the encoder asks for GOP length in frames. If the encoder accepts time rather than frames, specify two seconds.
Audio
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3. Its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz for stereo and recommend 128 kbps stereo audio. Include audio in the test, even if the main concern is video: an otherwise healthy picture does not rule out a missing or misconfigured audio stream.

Choose an ingest protocol
RTMPS for a typical live event
Start with RTMPS for an ordinary stream where latency matters. YouTube describes it as RTMP over SSL and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Use a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, and allow outbound TCP port 443. Copy the current endpoint and key from YouTube’s stream settings rather than guessing or reusing an unverified URL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
HLS when its codec or HDR support is the priority
Consider HLS if HEVC/HDR or high-resolution delivery is more important than lower latency and your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements. The documented setup requires video and audio muxed in M2TS; video may be H.264 or HEVC at up to 60 fps, audio must be AAC, and the GOP must be closed. YouTube recommends media segments from one to four seconds and says segments must not exceed five seconds. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC. Review Google’s HLS ingestion guide before configuring an encoder for it.

The current comparison is available from Google’s YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up and test the VPS stream
- Identify the workload. Determine whether your VPS receives an already-encoded 4K60 file/feed or must resize or encode the source. Note the input format and any filters. These details affect whether the server can keep up.
- Validate the VPS and encoder together. Choose an instance and encoder combination, then test the exact codec, preset, filters, and input. Confirm that it sustains 60 encoded frames per second at 3840×2160; do not infer performance from a general-purpose CPU or GPU specification.
- Check sustained egress and transfer limits. Compare the VPS’s real outbound capacity and data-transfer allowance with your chosen bitrate, including headroom for audio and variation. Confirm outbound TCP port 443 is allowed for RTMPS.
- Configure the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its current ingest details. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key supports manual selection. Keep the key out of logs, public code, and screenshots. The API’s LiveStreams documentation describes explicit 2160p and 60 fps settings as well as automatic detection when both fields are variable.
- Configure the encoder. Set output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, select a supported codec, use CBR, and set two-second keyframes. For RTMPS, enter the valid YouTube endpoint and connection path, and configure supported AAC or MP3 audio.
- Run a controlled test. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled stream and include representative motion and audio. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Check stream health before going public and monitor it during the event.
There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for an unspecified VPS and source: the command depends on the installed FFmpeg build, available software or hardware encoder, input, and destination format. If you use FFmpeg, verify the deployed build supports the selected encoder and RTMPS transport, then confirm its actual output settings and performance in a controlled test.

Diagnose common stream problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports low bitrate | Encoder output bitrate, sustained VPS egress, provider limits, and network variation. | Confirm the encoder is producing the intended CBR output and test sustained upload capacity. Do not treat a short speed-test peak as proof of sustained delivery. |
| Frame-rate mismatch or dropped frames | Whether the source, encoder output, and YouTube stream settings agree on 60 fps; whether the VPS can encode in real time. | Test the exact workload and inspect encoder performance. Reduce unnecessary filters or choose a capable encoder/VPS combination if it cannot sustain the target. |
| Keyframe or GOP warning | Keyframe interval and whether the configured GOP is longer than intended. | Set a two-second interval; at 60 fps, use 120 frames if the encoder expresses GOP size in frames. Keep within YouTube’s four-second maximum guidance. |
| No audio or audio warning | Whether an audio track is present and whether the codec is accepted for the selected protocol. | For RTMPS, verify AAC or MP3 output and check the track in a test that includes representative audio. |
| Ingestion starvation or intermittent disconnects | VPS egress stability, route, port 443 access, endpoint/path, and resource saturation. | Confirm the RTMPS URL and application path from YouTube, verify outbound access, and monitor both server resource use and sustained network throughput. |
YouTube’s live stream health and API diagnostics cover issues including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe/GOP problems, missing audio, and video-ingestion starvation. Use those signals alongside encoder and VPS monitoring rather than diagnosing from the viewer’s playback alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than encode a live camera or feed on your own VPS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details. To try it, start a StreamNeo free day.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before streaming a recording or playlist, confirm that you have the rights needed for every video and audio track. A live-stream setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. YouTube may apply copyright enforcement or other channel rules to live content; review the applicable requirements for your content and account before scheduling a public stream. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
