You may not need to split it: YouTube allows verified accounts to upload videos up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first. If your video exceeds either limit—or you want it divided into chapters—split it into separate files, upload each to YouTube Studio, and arrange them in one playlist. For a quick split without re-encoding, FFmpeg can copy the existing video and audio streams, but cuts may land on nearby keyframes rather than exact timestamps.
Check whether you need to split the video
YouTube Help says verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes, up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Check both the file size and duration before you start. If the account is not eligible for long uploads, YouTube may require verification; copyright claims or strikes can also affect eligibility. YouTube recommends an up-to-date browser when uploading files larger than 20 GB. YouTube’s long-video upload guidance has the account and limit details.
- If the video fits both limits, upload it as one video unless dividing it will help viewers navigate the content.
- If it is over 256 GB, YouTube suggests compressing it with video-editing software and names H.264 as an option. Compression settings depend on the source codec, image quality, and target size; check the output before replacing your original.
- If it is longer than 12 hours, splitting is necessary to keep each upload within the duration limit.
Choose useful parts and cut points
Split at natural chapter, topic, or scene changes so the playlist feels intentional. Keep each file comfortably within YouTube’s applicable upload limits. Give parts clear, consistent titles—such as “Part 1,” “Part 2”—and make sure the final part is not mistaken for an unfinished upload.
With a stream-copy split, a requested cut time is not necessarily the actual cut time. FFmpeg’s segment muxer starts segments at keyframes, so an available keyframe near the target may determine the boundary. The muxer works best with a single constant-frame-rate video stream. If a cut must land at a precise point, you may need to re-encode with keyframes placed at the intended boundaries. See the FFmpeg segment muxer documentation.

Split with FFmpeg
FFmpeg can create numbered segments while copying the encoded streams rather than decoding and re-encoding them. This is usually faster and avoids generation loss from another encode. The appropriate command depends on the input’s container, video and audio codecs, subtitle streams, and desired split points, so no single command is guaranteed to work unchanged for every file.
- Install FFmpeg and identify the input file and the streams you want to retain. Review the available options in the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Use the segment muxer with the input file, map the desired streams, select stream copy with
-c copy, set a segment interval, and provide a numbered output filename pattern. Consult the segment muxer documentation for the relevant options and constraints rather than assuming one interval produces exact scene cuts. - Check every output part before uploading: play the end of one and the start of the next, and check for missing audio, sync problems, or an awkward cut.
Stream copy preserves the encoded streams without an extra lossy encode, but it cannot freely change the codec or bitrate to shrink files. If file size or precise boundaries matter more, re-encode using settings appropriate to the source and desired output. Re-encoding takes more computation and can reduce image or audio quality; test a short section and inspect the result before processing the full video. FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation explains the distinction between copying and transcoding.

Upload the parts and arrange a YouTube playlist
- Open YouTube Studio, select the upload option, and choose the part files. Enter clear titles and details for each video.
- For each upload, add the video to the same existing playlist or create a playlist for the series. YouTube Studio supports both choices during upload; see YouTube’s computer upload instructions.
- Review the playlist and put the parts in the intended sequence. Use consistent numbering in titles as well as the playlist order, so viewers can identify where to continue.
- Choose visibility and publication timing deliberately. Uploading imports a file to YouTube; publishing makes it available to viewers. A completed upload is not automatically the same as a published video.
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot upload a long video: Confirm long-video eligibility and account verification, then check for account restrictions. The cap is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever comes first.
- The file exceeds 256 GB: Consider compressing a copy in video-editing software; YouTube names H.264. Inspect quality and confirm the resulting size before uploading.
- A segment begins later or earlier than the requested time: Stream-copy cuts follow keyframes. Choose a nearby natural boundary or re-encode with keyframes positioned for the intended cut.
- A segment will not play cleanly or audio is out of sync: Test the output parts locally before upload. Revisit stream selection and container compatibility, or try an appropriately configured transcode.
- Parts appear in the wrong sequence: Check playlist order and the numbering in each title; do not rely on upload order alone.
- The video is uploaded but viewers cannot watch it: Check its visibility and publication status. Uploading and publishing are separate steps in YouTube’s workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream rather than simply splitting a file for ordinary viewing, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
