For a supported Xbox game, connect to Xbox network, let the game save, then close it normally and wait for its cloud synchronization to finish. Cloud saves preserve progress; they do not, by themselves, guarantee you can still launch a game after it leaves Game Pass. Check that title’s removal notice and storefront details separately.
How to sync your latest progress before you stop playing
- Connect and sign in. Connect your Xbox or PC to the internet and sign in with the Xbox account you used to play.
- Open the game and let it synchronize. Allow any pending synchronization to finish before playing. If another device may still have unsynced progress, avoid starting the game there; doing so can create competing save versions.
- Save in the game and exit normally. Use the game’s save option, if it has one, then close the game rather than interrupting its session. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation says supported titles attempt to upload save data when a session ends while connected, and may also attempt synchronization periodically during play. The precise behavior can vary by title.
- Check the status where available. On PC or handheld, look for Xbox’s Game Save Sync Indicator. Xbox announced the indicator in January 2026 as a way to see cloud-save status across PC and handheld experiences; its availability and interface may depend on the device and current rollout.
Microsoft’s developer documentation describes saves syncing between local storage and the cloud through supported game-save services. If you play offline, progress from that session may remain only on the device until it reconnects and syncs. Microsoft’s Game Saves overview explains the intended flow for games using those APIs; it is not a guarantee that every game has identical behavior.
What to do if Xbox asks you to choose a save
A conflict can occur when both the local and cloud copies have changed since the last synchronization. Microsoft says the system prompts you to resolve it. Compare the displayed progress, timestamps, or other available details and select the copy containing your latest progress. Do not choose automatically if you are unsure which version is newer.
If you cannot tell which copy is current, stop before confirming a choice. Reconnect the device that likely has the newest progress, open the game, and allow it to sync before resolving the conflict elsewhere. This reduces the chance of overwriting the save you meant to keep.

Will your Game Pass save still be there if the game leaves?
Saving progress and keeping access to the game are separate questions. The official save-sync documentation describes how supported games synchronize data; it does not establish a universal rule for whether or how you can launch a particular game after its Game Pass catalog access changes. Check the game’s current leaving notice and store listing for its specific availability and access details.
If you buy the game to keep playing, check that you are buying a version compatible with the platform and account you use, and confirm that the title supports the save carryover you need. A cloud save alone does not prove that different editions, platforms, or storefront versions will share progress.

Can you continue the same save on Xbox, PC, or handheld?
Xbox documents cross-device save carryover for games in the Xbox Play Anywhere collection: supported games carry saves, add-ons, and achievements across supported PC, console, and handheld devices when you sign in with your Xbox account. Xbox’s January 2026 Play Anywhere update says the collection includes more than 1,000 games. That is the collection’s size, not a statistic about save loss, and the feature should not be assumed for every title or PC storefront.
Before switching devices, check whether the exact game is listed as Xbox Play Anywhere and whether the PC copy is the relevant Xbox version. Xbox’s May 2025 Play Anywhere announcement says, within its Play Anywhere section, that “Progress, including saves, game add-ons, and achievements, is carried over wherever the game is played.” That claim applies to supported Play Anywhere games, not every game with the same name.

Quick checks before a game leaves the catalog
- Sign in with the Xbox account that holds your progress.
- Connect to Xbox network, open the game, and let pending sync activity finish.
- Save in-game and exit normally; allow the session to end.
- Use the Game Save Sync Indicator on PC or handheld if it is available on your device.
- Resolve any local-versus-cloud prompt by choosing the copy with the latest progress.
- Check the specific game’s removal notice and store listing if you need to keep playing after catalog access changes.
- For another device or a purchased copy, verify the platform, version, account, and Play Anywhere or other documented cross-save support.
