You can run wkhtmltopdf on a Synology NAS by deploying a container through Container Manager’s Project workflow, using a Compose file. The important catch is that there is no single verified image or Compose configuration that works across every Synology model and DSM version. First check your NAS model and CPU architecture, then choose an image whose maintainer documents support for both and supplies the necessary configuration.

Before you start: check NAS and image compatibility

Container Manager is Synology’s route for managing containerized applications. Its Project workflow accepts a docker-compose.yml file and provides controls to start, stop, restart, and review a project. That makes it a practical way to manage wkhtmltopdf without installing its libraries directly into the NAS operating system.

Compatibility is not automatic. Synology package availability depends on the NAS model, while wkhtmltopdf packages and container images can vary by Linux distribution, processor architecture, and operating-system dependencies. A Compose file that works on one NAS may fail on another.

  1. Identify your exact NAS model and DSM version. In DSM, open Control Panel and check the system information. Confirm that Container Manager is available for your model and DSM version.
  2. Determine the NAS CPU architecture. Check Synology’s specifications for your exact model. Do not infer the architecture from the product family or assume that an image labelled “Linux” supports it.
  3. Inspect the image’s current documentation. Confirm that it supports the NAS architecture, list its required libraries and fonts, and understand its expected volumes, environment variables, and command.
  4. Choose how input and output will be handled. Decide which directory will contain trusted HTML input and where generated PDFs will be written. Use only paths and mount settings documented for the selected image.

Synology’s generic container documentation describes image, port, volume, environment, network, and command settings. It does not provide wkhtmltopdf-specific values, and Synology cautions that it does not guarantee the quality of third-party images. Treat the image maintainer’s instructions as essential rather than filling in missing settings by guesswork.

Choose a container image before writing Compose

The available official information does not establish one universally correct third-party wkhtmltopdf image and Compose file for Synology. The upstream project publishes packages for particular Linux distributions and processor architectures, and the separate packaging project documents build constraints. Those details matter because wkhtmltopdf depends on system libraries and rendering components that may not be present in an arbitrary base image.

Before adopting an image, check these items in its own current documentation:

  • Supported CPU architectures, including the one used by your NAS.
  • The Linux distribution and required shared libraries.
  • Whether fonts are included, how to add fonts, and whether custom fonts persist after container recreation.
  • The image’s documented invocation: whether it expects a command-line argument, a watched directory, or a service interface.
  • Exact input/output paths, volume mount directions, and any required environment variables.
  • Whether it opens a network port. If so, what listens on that port and what authentication or access controls are available.
  • How the image is updated and pinned, and what changes may occur when you pull a newer tag.

Do not copy a Compose example intended for another image and assume its fields apply. A wrong mount can leave the container unable to read input or write output; an unsupported architecture or missing library can prevent it from starting at all.

Create and start the project in Container Manager

Once you have selected an image and obtained its exact settings from the image maintainer, create a project around those settings. The workflow below describes the Synology interface; the values for the Compose file must come from the selected image’s documentation.

  1. In DSM, open Container Manager and go to Project.
  2. Select Create, enter a project name, and choose the location for the project files.
  3. Provide the image maintainer’s documented docker-compose.yml, either by pasting it into the project editor or selecting the file, depending on the interface available in your Container Manager version.
  4. Review the Compose configuration against the image documentation. Verify the image name and tag, architecture compatibility, mounts, environment variables, command, network mode, and any ports before creating the project.
  5. Create and start the project. Watch the project status and container logs for startup errors. A running status alone does not prove that PDF conversion works.
  6. Use the project controls to stop, restart, or review the configuration later. Keep the Compose file with your deployment notes so you can reproduce the setup after an update or restore.

There is deliberately no universal Compose snippet here: without a selected image, its documented command and mount paths are unknown. Inventing those values would produce a configuration that looks concrete but may not run or may expose an unintended service.

Run a safe conversion test

After startup, test with a small HTML file you control, not a page containing private data or untrusted scripts. Follow the image’s documented way to invoke wkhtmltopdf and use the input and output paths you mounted. Then inspect the resulting PDF rather than treating a successful exit as proof that rendering is correct.

  • Text and layout: Check that text is present, readable, and not clipped at page edges.
  • Fonts: Compare the output with the expected typeface. Missing fonts can change line breaks and page count.
  • CSS and page dimensions: Check the styles that matter to your document, paper size, margins, and orientation.
  • Headers and footers: If your workflow needs them, verify their content and placement in the generated PDF.
  • Images and remote resources: Confirm that the container can access the resources your HTML references. Network access and resource-loading behavior depend on the image, command, and deployment.
  • Output permissions: Confirm that the PDF appears in the host directory you intended and can be read by the account or application that needs it.

Repeat the check after changing the image, libraries, fonts, or conversion options. Container recreation and image updates can alter dependencies or rendering behavior.

Security: do not process untrusted HTML

The wkhtmltopdf project explicitly warns against using the tool with untrusted HTML and says user-supplied HTML or JavaScript should be sanitized. A container is a deployment boundary, not a reason to accept hostile input as safe. If other people or applications can submit documents, assess the risks before exposing a conversion workflow.

If you make conversion available over a network, treat authentication, access restrictions, and isolation as deployment requirements. Expose only the access that your use case requires, and review the selected image’s documented service behavior. The generic Synology container workflow does not establish how a particular third-party image protects a network endpoint.

What to know about wkhtmltopdf’s age

The wkhtmltopdf downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. GitHub marks the main repository archived on January 2, 2023; the packaging repository was archived on August 28, 2023. These dates make maintenance status and rendering-engine suitability important considerations, especially for a service that handles sensitive or untrusted content.

Container versus native installation

Neither approach is universally best. A native install avoids managing a container but must match the NAS operating system and architecture and provide the required libraries. A container can make the application and its dependencies easier to package and reproduce, but it still depends on image compatibility and a maintained configuration.

Consideration Container Manager project Native installation
CPU and platform fit Image must support the NAS architecture and its container runtime. Package must match the NAS architecture and operating system.
Libraries and fonts Must be present in the image or added using its documented method. Must be installed and maintained on the NAS environment.
Reproducibility and update control Compose configuration and image tag can record deployment choices; image updates still need review. Depends on how the package and dependencies are installed and tracked.
Security boundary Containerization does not make untrusted HTML safe; deployment isolation and access control still matter. Untrusted HTML remains a risk and requires careful handling.

The platform documentation supports these distinctions but does not establish a universal winner or a Synology-specific native installation recipe.

Troubleshooting common failures

Container Manager is unavailable

Check whether your exact NAS model and DSM version support Container Manager. Package availability depends on model compatibility; do not assume that instructions for a different Synology model apply.

The image will not start or reports an architecture error

Compare the NAS CPU architecture with the image’s published supported architectures. If they do not match, select a compatible image rather than trying to force an incompatible build.

The container exits with missing-library errors

The image may not include the dependencies required by its wkhtmltopdf build, or it may target a different Linux distribution. Consult the image documentation for the supported base system and dependencies; do not install random libraries into a running container without a reproducible plan.

The command cannot find the HTML file or cannot write the PDF

Check the image’s documented container paths and compare them with the host-to-container volume mapping in Compose. Confirm that the file exists at the path as seen inside the container and that the container process has permission to write to the output location.

The PDF is blank, incomplete, or visually different

Check that the input is trusted and accessible, that required fonts and styles are available, and that external images or other resources can be loaded from the container. Confirm the page-size and rendering options documented for your image. A successful container startup does not verify document rendering.

The conversion service cannot be reached

First establish whether the chosen image actually runs a network service. If its documentation specifies a port, compare that port with the Compose configuration and Synology’s port assignments. Synology notes that port conflicts can occur. Do not expose a port unless you understand what service listens on it and how access is controlled.

When to use another rendering approach

Choose wkhtmltopdf only if its maintenance status, rendering behavior, dependencies, and security profile suit your workload. If you need current browser-engine behavior, compare maintained alternatives against your actual HTML and CSS before migrating; the available Synology and wkhtmltopdf information does not identify a single replacement or provide a tested cross-model deployment. For any candidate, verify NAS architecture support, deployment instructions, and handling of untrusted input before making it part of a production workflow.
