VPNBook supports two practical Windows setup methods: OpenVPN through OpenVPN Connect and PPTP through Windows’ built-in VPN settings. Use OpenVPN for the safer, recommended connection. PPTP is easier to configure because it needs no separate client, but VPNBook labels it “Legacy” with “Basic” security, and OpenVPN’s own documentation describes PPTP as obsolete.
The current VPNBook username is vpnbook. Its shared password changes periodically, so retrieve the password from VPNBook’s current Free OpenVPN or PPTP VPN page immediately before connecting.
Before you begin
- Windows 11 and Windows 10: both support the Windows VPN settings used for PPTP.
- Windows 11 SE: the Windows VPN feature is not available.
- Windows 10: Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. The VPN feature still exists, but the operating system no longer receives regular security fixes or technical support.
- OpenVPN: requires the separate OpenVPN Connect application and a VPNBook
.ovpnprofile. - PPTP: uses Windows’ built-in VPN client, but it should not be chosen for modern privacy or security protection.
OpenVPN and PPTP are different protocols. An OpenVPN profile cannot be added as a PPTP connection, and Windows’ normal Add a VPN connection form is not an OpenVPN profile importer.
Method 1: Set up VPNBook OpenVPN in Windows 10 or 11
This is the preferred method. VPNBook currently describes OpenVPN as its most secure and recommended option.

1. Download OpenVPN Connect
- Download the Windows installer for OpenVPN Connect. Choose the installer labeled Download .msi.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- At OpenVPN Connect Setup, select Next.
- Accept I accept the terms in the License Agreement, then select Next.
- Select Install on the ready-to-install screen.
- Select Finish when the installation completes.
- When OpenVPN Connect first opens, review the OpenVPN Inc. Data Collection, Use And Retention notice and select Agree if you want to continue.
2. Download a current VPNBook profile
- Open VPNBook’s Free OpenVPN page.
- Under Select Server, choose a current server. VPNBook currently lists these OpenVPN hosts:

- Under Select Protocol, choose a transport:

| UDP 25000 | VPNBook describes this as the speed-oriented option, but it may be blocked. |
- Select Download Configuration and save the ZIP archive.
- Open File Explorer, right-click the ZIP file, and choose Extract All….
The extracted folder contains profiles named for the server and transport, such as vpnbook-pl134-tcp443.ovpn. The server and filename may differ from this example.
3. Import the profile into OpenVPN Connect
- Open OpenVPN Connect.
- On the screen asking whether you have a configuration file, choose Upload File under Have a configuration file instead (.ovpn)?.
- In Import Profile or Certificate, browse to the extracted folder.
- Select the desired
.ovpnfile and choose Open. - Check the profile name. It should identify the VPNBook server and transport, for example
vpnbook-pl134-tcp443. - Continue with the import.
4. Enter the VPNBook credentials and connect
- When OpenVPN Connect displays Enter credentials, enter
vpnbookin Username. - Enter the current password displayed on VPNBook’s OpenVPN page. The currently published password is listed there with a last-updated date of July 18, 2026, but do not rely on an old article, screenshot, or saved password.
- Select Enter.
- Turn the imported profile on or select its connection control.
A successful connection displays Securely Connected!, a Disconnect button, and the VPN connection details. Windows may also show a VPN indicator or blue shield on the taskbar network icon.
Method 2: Set up VPNBook PPTP using Windows’ built-in VPN
Choose this only when you specifically need PPTP compatibility. PPTP is not interchangeable with OpenVPN, has known security weaknesses, and may be blocked by the network.

Windows 11
- Search Windows for
vpn settings. - Open the VPN settings system-settings result.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
- Select Add VPN.
- Enter the following values:

- Optionally select Remember my sign-in info.
- Select Save.
- On the VPN settings page, select the new profile and choose Connect.
Alternatively, select the Network, Volume, Battery area on the taskbar, choose VPN, select Manage VPN connections, choose the VPNBook profile, and select Connect. A connected profile displays Connected and provides a Disconnect control.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > VPN.
- Select Add a VPN connection.
- Use these values:

- Optionally enable Remember my sign-in info.
- Select Save.
- Select the taskbar Network icon.
- Select the VPNBook connection and choose Connect. Depending on the Windows 10 build, this may open the VPN section in Settings, where you must select Connect again.
How to check that the VPN connected
For a Windows-built-in profile, open the VPN page in Settings and confirm that Connected appears below the profile name. For OpenVPN, confirm that OpenVPN Connect reports Securely Connected!.

For an additional check, open a browser and search for what is my IP address before and after connecting. The public address and apparent location should change to the VPN server’s connection. This checks the visible public address; it does not prove that every application is using the tunnel or that the service is suitable for sensitive activity.
VPNBook connection problems and fixes

| Imported profile no longer works | Download a fresh configuration archive. VPNBook announced updated OpenVPN configurations on January 25, 2026, making older files potentially stale. |
| Server cannot be reached | Confirm that the hostname belongs to the protocol you selected. For example, do not enter us16.vpnbook.com into a native PPTP profile when it is listed on VPNBook’s OpenVPN page. |

For a new VPNBook installation, download a current OpenVPN profile and use OpenVPN Connect. Use PPTP only when its compatibility advantage outweighs its security limitations.

Can Windows 10 or Windows 11 import VPNBook OpenVPN files directly?
No. The standard Windows VPN form is not an OpenVPN profile importer. Install OpenVPN Connect, choose Upload File, and import the VPNBook .ovpn profile there.

What is the current VPNBook username?
The public username is vpnbook. The shared password changes, so obtain the current password from VPNBook rather than copying one from an older guide.
Why does VPNBook PPTP fail while OpenVPN works?
A network may block PPTP. VPNBook specifically recommends using OpenVPN when PPTP is blocked. You can also try an OpenVPN TCP 443 profile on restrictive networks.
Can I use us16.vpnbook.com for a Windows PPTP connection?
Do not assume so. VPNBook currently lists us16.vpnbook.com as an OpenVPN host. Its current PPTP list contains pl134.vpnbook.com, pl140.vpnbook.com, and ca225.vpnbook.com.

Is PPTP safe for privacy?
PPTP is obsolete and has well-known security weaknesses. VPNBook labels it Legacy with Basic security. Prefer OpenVPN and avoid PPTP for sensitive traffic.
Do I need command-line commands to configure VPNBook OpenVPN?
No. The documented Windows procedure uses the OpenVPN Connect graphical application, a downloaded .ovpn file, and the username and password fields.
The Bottom Line
Use OpenVPN for VPNBook on Windows 10 or 11: install OpenVPN Connect, download a current VPNBook configuration, extract it, select Upload File, and sign in as vpnbook with the current published password. Windows’ built-in VPN page can create a VPNBook PPTP profile, but PPTP is a legacy protocol and is the less secure, less reliable choice.
