A Playwright MCP screenshot timeout is not always a screenshot problem. First identify whether navigation, an action, MCP’s post-action settling, or a wait for page content is stalled. Increase only the matching timeout, then wait for a page-specific readiness signal before capturing.
Which Playwright MCP timeout should you change?
Playwright MCP documents separate limits for actions, navigation, and the short settling period after an action. The documented defaults are starting values, not guarantees that every site will respond within those limits; check the version of the server you are running. Playwright MCP configuration documents these options.

Use the option corresponding to the operation that actually timed out. A navigation timeout does not control every action or MCP settling delay, and raising a timeout does not ensure the page content you need has rendered.
Apply the setting through your MCP host
Configure the flag or environment variable in the way your MCP server is launched. The available documentation names both forms, but whether a particular MCP client lets you set them depends on that client and its configuration. After changing launch settings, restart or reconnect the server if the host requires it, and verify the effective values. If you do not know which operation failed, inspect the error and the tool call immediately before it before changing settings.

How do you wait for a slow page before taking a screenshot?
Wait for the condition that matters to the image, such as a heading appearing, a loading label disappearing, or a particular result being present. Playwright MCP provides browser_wait_for for explicit waits; its waiting guide also describes selector waits and, for conditions that need code, examples using browser_run_code_unsafe. See the Playwright MCP waiting documentation for the tool syntax supported by your server version.
- Choose a page-specific signal. Identify the text or element that proves the content you intend to capture is ready. A generic event such as “the document loaded” may occur before a delayed widget or results section appears.
- Wait for that signal. Use
browser_wait_forfor relevant text or disappearance of a known loading message. Use a selector, predicate, or response condition when text alone cannot express the requirement. - Capture after the condition succeeds. If the condition never occurs, investigate the page, browser logs, and network activity instead of extending a wait indefinitely.
A longer timeout and a readiness condition solve different problems: the former gives an operation more time; the latter checks whether the particular content needed for the screenshot is present.

Should you use networkidle?
Not as the default readiness test. Playwright navigation supports commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. These wait for different lifecycle milestones: a response and document-loading start, DOM content loaded, the load event, or at least 500 ms with no network connections, respectively. The Playwright API documentation discourages networkidle for tests and recommends assertions to assess readiness. Background polling or other continuing requests can make network quietness a poor proxy for the content you need.
Choose the earliest navigation milestone suitable for your task, then explicitly wait for the required content. That avoids waiting on unrelated network activity when a specific page element is the real requirement.

Are fixed sleeps a good fix?
No, not as a production readiness check. Playwright says page.waitForTimeout() should be used only for debugging, not tests; fixed delays are inherently flaky because they may be too short on one run and waste time on another. Prefer locator actions and assertions that wait for the relevant condition. A brief fixed pause can help diagnose timing during debugging, but it does not establish that content is ready.

- Viewport: the visible browser area; this is the default.
- Element: capture a particular element with
target. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Full-page capture cannot be combined withtarget.
If a full-page image is slow or unnecessarily large, use the viewport or a target element when that meets the task. If you need to inspect page text or structure rather than visual appearance, use an accessibility snapshot instead; Playwright MCP distinguishes snapshots from screenshots for this purpose. Diagnose the common timeout patterns

What if changing the timeout does not fix it?
A precise case-specific diagnosis depends on details that vary by setup. Record the MCP server version, MCP host/client, exact timeout text, failing tool call, effective startup flags or environment variables, and whether the capture is viewport, element, or full page. If the matching timeout and a targeted readiness wait do not resolve the problem, inspect browser logs and network behavior, and check whether the client has its own request deadline separate from server settings.

The screenshot reference does not document a separately configurable screenshot-timeout option. Do not assume one exists or that a larger navigation limit will fix a blocked, failed, or indefinitely loading site. The available documentation does not establish a universal client deadline or a single timeout value that works for every website.
