First check whether the photo is blurry on the slide while editing or only after you start the slideshow. If it is blurry in both places, investigate the image and PowerPoint’s compression; if it is sharp while editing but blurry on the presentation display, investigate the monitor, projector, and slideshow output settings.
Find out where the blur appears
Compare the photo in PowerPoint’s normal editing view with the same slide in Slide Show. Also note whether the problem affects one photo or every photo, and whether it appears on the computer screen, an external monitor, or a projector. These checks help distinguish an image-quality problem from an output or display problem.
- Blurry in editing view and Slide Show: Start with the photo’s original quality, size, and editing history, then check whether PowerPoint has compressed it.
- Sharp in editing view, blurry only in Slide Show: Check which display is showing the presentation and investigate display resolution, scaling, and slideshow settings before changing the photo.
- Only one photo is blurry: Focus first on that photo’s source and how much it has been enlarged.
- All photos are blurry on an external display: Focus first on the display connection, resolution, scaling, and which monitor is receiving the slideshow.
If the photo is blurry on the slide
Check the source image and its size
A low-resolution or previously compressed photo may not contain enough detail for the size at which it appears on the slide. If you have the original, higher-quality image, reinsert it and compare. Enlarging a small image substantially can make its softness more noticeable. PowerPoint settings can help prevent further quality loss, but they cannot restore detail that was absent from the source or discarded by earlier editing.
Prevent additional compression in desktop PowerPoint
In desktop PowerPoint, open File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality and check the settings for the current presentation. Where available, select High fidelity as the default resolution. If image quality matters more than file size, select Do not compress images in file. Microsoft describes High fidelity as an option for inserting pictures with minimal compression for optimal rendering on high-resolution displays; Microsoft also says PowerPoint 2016 and later use it by default. Setting names and paths can vary by version and platform.

Disabling compression can improve picture quality, but it may make the presentation file much larger. Microsoft’s picture-compression guidance gives 220 ppi as the default picture resolution in Microsoft 365. That is a software setting, not a universal resolution requirement for slideshow photos. See Microsoft’s guidance on default picture resolution and instructions for turning off picture compression.
These compression controls are desktop features; Microsoft’s guidance says they are not available in Microsoft 365 for the web. Menu availability and wording may also depend on your PowerPoint version and platform.

Avoid using compression as a repair
Picture Format > Compress Pictures is intended to reduce file size, and choosing a lower resolution can reduce picture quality. It is not a way to sharpen an image. Deleting cropped areas or discarding editing data can also remove information that would otherwise let you recover parts of the picture or undo edits. Keep an untouched copy of the presentation before making destructive image changes. Microsoft explains these options in its guidance to reduce a PowerPoint presentation’s file size and reduce the file size of a picture in Office.
Try sharpening only as a visual adjustment
In supported desktop versions, select the picture and look under Picture Format > Corrections for a sharpness preview or adjustment. Use it to judge whether a modest visual change helps; sharpening is not a substitute for a better original and cannot reliably restore fine detail that has been lost. Microsoft documents the control in its instructions to change a picture’s brightness, contrast, or sharpness.

If the photo is blurry only during Slide Show
Check the display receiving the slideshow
Confirm which monitor is showing the slideshow and compare the computer’s resolution with the external monitor or projector’s resolution. If the image became blurry after you connected or disconnected a monitor, docked or undocked the computer, or changed display scaling, try restarting the Office app. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance also suggests signing out of Windows and signing back in when appropriate. These steps address display behavior; they do not improve a low-detail source photo. See Microsoft’s guidance for Office apps that look the wrong size or blurry on external monitors.
Change slideshow settings one at a time
On Windows, PowerPoint documents slideshow resolution and hardware graphics acceleration settings that may be relevant when a presentation looks different in Slide Show. Change one setting at a time and compare the result so you can identify which change helps. These instructions are Windows-oriented; do not assume the same controls are available on Mac or in PowerPoint for the web. See Microsoft’s tips for improving presentation performance.

Check the presentation setup before you present
Test the actual computer, external display, or projector you plan to use. Check the slideshow on that equipment and confirm its output resolution. Microsoft notes that a mismatch between computer and projector resolution can cause cropping or other display problems. Its presentation delivery guidance recommends checking the equipment and resolution in advance.
