Estimate monthly VPS egress from the stream’s outgoing bitrate and the time it runs: decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. At a steady bitrate, each 1 Mbps uses about 324 GB over 30 continuous days, before protocol overhead, retransmissions, or provider-specific metering. A 4 Mbps stream therefore sends about 1,296 GB (1.296 TB) in that period.

Calculate the stream’s monthly data transfer

Use the bitrate actually sent from the VPS to YouTube, not the number of viewers watching. This estimates outbound stream payload in decimal gigabytes (GB); it is not a VPS bill or a provider-published monthly allowance.

  1. Find the outgoing bitrate. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in use. For a variable-bitrate stream, use its average outgoing bitrate over the period if available.
  2. Determine the streamed time. A 30-day month has 2,592,000 seconds. For shorter runtimes or a different month length, substitute the actual number of seconds online.
  3. Apply the formula. Multiply bitrate in Mbps by seconds, divide by 8 to convert bits to bytes, then divide by 1,000 to get decimal GB.
  4. Compare with metered usage. After the stream runs, compare the estimate with the VPS provider’s usage dashboard. The estimate excludes unspecified overhead and may differ from provider accounting.

For example, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days sends 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 324 GB. At the same bitrate, 12 hours per day for 30 days is half as much: about 162 GB. If bitrate varies, a configured peak can overstate usage when the stream usually sends less.

Use a bitrate that matches your YouTube encoder settings

YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder guidance gives the following example bitrates. The 30-day transfer amounts below are derived estimates for a stream running continuously at the listed bitrate; they are not published usage figures from YouTube or a VPS provider.

YouTube H.264 setting Recommended bitrate Estimated transfer over 30 continuous days
240p–720p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 1,296 GB (1.296 TB)
720p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 1,944 GB (1.944 TB)
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 3,240 GB (3.24 TB)
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 3,888 GB (3.888 TB)

YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 settings separately, so do not treat the H.264 examples as universal. Match the calculation to the codec and frame rate you actually configure. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.

Do not confuse transfer volume with upload headroom

YouTube recommends leaving 20% room in available upload bandwidth and says to account for a primary and backup stream. That margin is connection-capacity headroom, not an automatic 20% addition to encoded data transfer. If you actually transmit a backup stream at the same time, add its bitrate to the calculation for the period it is sent. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple formats for viewers. For VPS-to-YouTube ingest, calculate the VPS’s outgoing transfer from the stream bitrate; do not multiply it by viewer count. The audience’s playback is not additional outbound VPS traffic for the incoming feed. YouTube explains its live streaming and encoder settings.

Check what your VPS provider actually bills

The formula estimates stream payload, while your provider’s plan and accounting rules determine whether it fits an allowance or incurs extra charges. Check the specific plan, region, and billing period for:

These are examples of provider-specific rules, not universal VPS terms or recommendations.

Validate the estimate against a real stream

Use the configured bitrate and actual uptime for the calculation, then check the provider dashboard after the stream has run. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the actual stream and monitoring stream health. If available bandwidth cannot support the chosen setting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering the resolution. Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a continuous YouTube stream without keeping a VPS or home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. There are also free upload-time, cloud-versus-PC cost, and copyright safety tools. Start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
