Call fileChooser.isMultiple() on the chooser returned by page.waitForFileChooser(). It returns a boolean: true if the chooser allows multiple files and false otherwise. Register the wait before triggering the action that opens the chooser.
Get the chooser and check its multiple-file setting
Start waiting for the file chooser and trigger the page action together. Puppeteer’s documented pattern uses Promise.all so the listener is ready before the click:

Why the wait must come before the triggering action
page.waitForFileChooser() waits for a chooser to open; it does not retrieve one that is already active. If you call it after clicking the upload control, the event may already have happened and the wait can miss it. Starting the wait and click in the same Promise.all avoids that ordering problem.

Resolve the chooser before opening another
After inspecting the chooser, accept or cancel it. Browsers allow only one open file chooser at a time; leaving one unhandled can prevent a later chooser from appearing. Puppeteer documents accept() for selecting files and cancel() for dismissing the chooser.
Select files with accept()
await fileChooser.accept(['/absolute/path/to/file.txt']);accept() takes an array of file-path strings and does not validate whether the files exist. Relative paths resolve from the current working directory. When using remote Chrome, use absolute paths. See the FileChooser.accept() reference.

Cancel when you only need to inspect
await fileChooser.cancel();Canceling is useful when the test needs the chooser’s setting but should not proceed with an upload. Complete the chooser interaction before asking the page to open another one.
Limits and version notes
Puppeteer documents that intercepting file dialogs opened through DOM APIs such as window.showOpenFilePicker() is not supported. In headful mode, the native picker dialog does not appear to the user while Puppeteer handles the chooser. Check the Puppeteer Page API documentation for these interception cautions.

Documentation pages can display different Puppeteer version labels: the FileChooser class reference cited here is surfaced as version 25.9.0, while other current API pages may show 25.12.0. Match behavior and available APIs to the version installed in your project.
Troubleshooting
- The wait never resolves: Make sure the action actually opens a supported file chooser and that
waitForFileChooser()is registered before the action. A dialog opened throughwindow.showOpenFilePicker()is outside the documented interception support. - A later chooser does not open: Accept or cancel the current chooser before triggering another one.
- File selection fails: Pass an array of paths to
accept(). Confirm the paths exist yourself; Puppeteer does not check them. Use absolute paths for remote Chrome. - The native dialog is not visible in headful mode: That is expected while Puppeteer handles the chooser; the dialog is intercepted rather than shown to the user.
