For a new YouTube Short, open the YouTube app’s Shorts camera, tap Green screen, and choose a photo or video from your device gallery. For a video already uploaded, YouTube Studio offers blur tools—not a documented way to replace the background. For a full scene change, edit the footage in a separate video editor and upload the finished video.

Use a photo or video as a new Short’s background
- Open the YouTube app and start creating a Short.
- On the recording screen, tap Green screen.
- Choose a photo or video from your device gallery.
- Record your Short with that background, make any remaining edits, and publish when it is ready.
You do not need a physical green screen for this in-app method: YouTube’s documented workflow lets you choose existing gallery media. The exact controls and availability can vary with the app version and device. (YouTube Help)
Try an AI-generated background if the option appears
YouTube also documents Shorts AI features that can generate a background for use with Green screen. Availability may differ by feature, region, and language settings, so treat this as an optional tool and check the current app for the control. (YouTube Help)
Blur part of a video that is already on YouTube
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content, select the video, then choose Editor.
- Choose Blur, then select Face blur or Custom blur.
- For Custom blur, position and resize the blur, choose its shape and timing, and set it to track an object or stay in one position.
- Preview the edited video carefully before saving.
Face blur and Custom blur are for concealing people or parts of the frame, not placing a new scene behind a subject. Some unedited videos with more than 100,000 views may not be eligible for changes other than face blur; YouTube notes an exception for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. (YouTube Help)

Preview before confirming
YouTube’s current review guidance says that, once saved, Studio edits cannot be reverted to the original pre-edited video through the editor. Check the preview before confirming the change. (YouTube Help)
Replace the background in footage you have already recorded
If the subject and background are clearly separated, use a separate video editor with a subject mask or background-removal feature, then place the new scene behind the subject. Results depend on the footage and the editor’s tools; hair, motion blur, shadows, and colors similar to the new background can make edges harder to refine.

Use chroma key when you can record against a green screen
- Record the subject against an evenly lit green screen, keeping the subject and clothing distinct from that color.
- In a separate editor, apply its chroma-key effect to remove the green screen.
- Place the desired background on a layer beneath the keyed footage and refine the edges and color spill.
- Export the finished video, review it, then upload it to YouTube.
Shotcut’s guide describes chroma key as removing a green screen so a separately captured or acquired background can be composited behind the subject. A physical backdrop is relevant to this filming workflow, not required for YouTube’s Shorts gallery-background tool. (Shotcut User Guide)
What happens to the original upload?
You cannot replace a YouTube upload with a different file while keeping its URL. Uploading the edited version creates a new video with a new URL, so plan for that if the old link is already shared. (YouTube Help)

Common problems and fixes
- Green screen is missing: Check that you are on the Shorts recording screen in the YouTube app. The documented control is there; its availability or placement can vary by device and app version. (YouTube Help)
- The gallery background option is unavailable: Use a supported photo or video from your device gallery and check whether the feature appears in the current app. AI-generated options have additional regional and language availability limits. (YouTube Help; YouTube Help)
- You only see blur in Studio: That is the documented Studio option for concealing areas; for a scene replacement, prepare the video in another editor and upload the result. (YouTube Help)
- Studio will not let you apply the edit: Some unedited videos above 100,000 views may be restricted to face blur, except for YouTube Partner Program channels. (YouTube Help)
- You cannot undo a saved Studio change: Preview the edit before saving; current guidance says the editor does not offer a way to restore the original after saving. (YouTube Help)
- The edited replacement has a different link: That is expected; a new upload receives a new URL rather than replacing the original file at its existing URL. (YouTube Help)
